I'm throwing this one up from earlier in the year—a mix I compiled and delivered for 'The D&M', a weekly Friday morning radio show on (the now, sadly departed) Orbital Radio.

So, as much as I set out to put together and promised a proper sub-100 BPM slow jam mix for Darcy, this one ended up very differently!

I, admittedly, hadn't played too many sweaty, peak-time dance floor sets during 2022, yet, I continue to buy music to suit such an affair, and this mix was the perfect opportunity to showcase a handful of them!

The mix kicks off with some deep grooves and builds up to some higher-energy burners and features some of my favourite artists and labels at the moment, including Retromigration, Jesse Bru, Cassettes For Kids, Clive From Accounts and Intr0beatz.

Makèz is no stranger to challenging the status quo of what house music can be. The duo is known for contemporarily remixing the ingredients of classic house into future proof compositions. In an old house flanking one of the canals of Amsterdam is a cozy home studio, with enough floor space for a couple of chairs and a side table. Stretched around the walls are computers, cables, synths, drum machines and vinyl records. It’s in this attic that Makèz, the duo of Kees van ’t Klooster and Jan-Willem Mulder, convene to explore the world of electronic music. The form of art that ties them to one another, as well as the world around them. The two met in high-school and instinctively connected. They spoke the same languages of classic disco records, jazz- and hip hop albums and soulful house singles. So, they found themselves crate-digging and swapping 12-inches constantly. It was only a matter of time before they wound up jamming together. It was then, that they learned their modes of self-expression are preternaturally harmonious. Kees finds his voice in sound design and has a keen feel for programming and arranging. Jan-Willem on the other hand, expresses himself through keyboard melodies, warm chords and wobbly basslines. They started recording their ideas on tape, and became music technology graduates. While exploring the versatility of the electronic music scene, Makèz demos drew the attention of hometown heroes Dam Swindle and landed on their label Heist in 2019. Their first EP ‘Different Planets’ gained major support from artists like Seth Troxler, Danny Krivit and Chez Damier. Not much later, a pair of club orientated EP’s on NYC’s Let’s Play House Records appeared. The blueprint of a Makèz piece is distinct and obvious, even if the words for it are elusive and shifting. Everything they produce is deeply soulful, informed by R&B, future jazz and deep house. The duo took time to further innovate their sound with insights they gained from their DJ gigs. Furthermore, their energetic and interactive style of playing records, plus their complementary studio flow, organically led to their first live-set. Their debut album, a Heist production, is called ‘City of All’. Join the two for a vibrant voyage, fusing the sounds of places that shaped their musical vision. Borderless in a way this modern world often seems to be afraid of. As they say, love will save the day, and Makèz is here to dance with you along that joyful journey.

Detroit-based producer, singer, and percussionist Alton Miller has been playing a fundamental role in defining House Music for over three decades.Born in Chicago and raised in Detroit on Stevie Wonder, Santana, Parliament Funkadelic and the Philly Sound, Alton Miller’s early roots in soul music led to an affinity for clubbing and the perfect storm of music, dance, and skill that is required to create it. Alton began developing his deejaying skills under the electrifying energy of House Music founding fathers like Larry Levan and Timmy Regisford, whereas he was often going to Ron Hardy’s Music Box and Frankie Knuckles’s private loft parties in Chicago. Drawing on Detroit’s rich dance club’s heritage, with seminal places like Club Heaven and L’Uomo, Miller opened the legendary club The Music Institute, in 1988, along with his like-minded friends Chez Damier and George Baker. Alton Miller has lived in France,Belgium and South Africa, where he continues to pursue his musical creation process. His travels have allowed him to discover other cultures and make a name for himself all around the globe. He has played on every continent and toured several countries including Japan, Vietnam, Tunisia, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand as well as prominent festivals like Movement,Lovefest, House in the Park and AfroPunk. He has released music on some of the best independent labels in the industry such as Detroit renowned Planet E and Mahogani Music and Europeans Defected and Neroli Records. Prolific producer, Alton Miller continues to further his musical endeavors with releases on labels, including his own InnerMuse Recordings and Music Institute Records. Since 2019, Miller has been cultivating his connection with South Africa’s thriving house music scene. That same year, he created the Alton Miller Foundation to help youth to develop life skills and frequently is asked to speak at workshops and symposiums about his experiences and contributions to Electronic music and House music.His next album,the highly anticipated “Now Is The Time, is scheduled for release in 2023 on Sound Signature, Theo Parrish’s record label. Two singles have been already released from the album, “Bring Me Down” in December 2017, and “Love Don’t Pass Me By” in August 2022.

In the spirit of defecting from the much-maligned third-person bio approach: in short, I am a Sydney-based DJ who specialises in the sounds of deeper house and disco.  I take delight in playing a solid warm-up set and revel in the success of watching a room build around it.

Since making my club debut as a fresh-faced eighteen-year-old at 'Thursday Delights' at the Icebox—a popular trance and hard dance event of the time—I have been lucky enough to play right across Sydney, enjoying bookings at Sounds on Sunday, S*A*S*H, Chinese Laundry, Plastic, Café del Mar, The Burdekin and Candy's Apartment; as well as larger-scale events such as Big Day Out and Harbour Party NYE.

In the process, I've also been fortunate enough to support some of the leading names in dance music—both locally and from around the world—including LCD Soundsystem, Booka Shade, Subb-an, Chymera, Sonja Moonear, Luke Chable, Jasper James, YokoO, Kenny Glasgow, Darren Emerson, Mark Dynamix and Kid Kenobi, to name just a few.

I like to put on the promoter hat, too, hosting and playing at events of my own: 'Attic' being my main project.

Since its inception, the Attic brand has enjoyed success in its standalone parties—for which we've toured renowned house and disco artists, Fouk, Nachtbraker, Folamour and Laurence Guy, to name a few—as well as appearing all around Sydney for invitational takeovers, radio appearances, and exclusive showcase sets.

Away from the club dancefloor, you might also find me playing an extended-length set in a low-lit bar, exercising the deeper, more eclectic selections of my record box—lower, slower and groovy, just the way I like it!

For ten years, I was heavily involved with the Internet radio game, hosting successful programs, 'Friday Night Live' and 'The M Shift'; on Indiesoundz and NSB Radio networks, respectively.  The M Shift, which ran for six years, specialised in breaks, house and drum 'n' bass, and was regularly enjoyed by thousands of live listeners, downloaders, and Podcast-listeners alike.

As above, I pride myself on playing a good warm-up set—added again for emphasis!—and believe it to be somewhat of a lost art form in this current age.

I also don't mind getting in the studio occasionally, but that facet, for now, is still very much a work in progress!
