Episode 1 - Pryde of the X-Men (1989)

Ryan and Maddy's second episode of The Mutant Ages features their first foray into X-Men: The Animated Series, with a big spotlight on Jubilee. Did you know that Jubilee is one of Ryan's favorite X-Men? Anyway, this episode is already way longer than we planned for it to be, so bear with us. Episode 2 - "Night of the Sentinels Part 1,"  X-Men: The Animated Series

X-Men: The Animated Series gets real heavy in the second episode, because our heroes lose one of their own. Ahh, Morph, we hardly knew you! Ryan and Maddy do a spotlight on Morph's comic book history, and then, analyze whether or not Wolverine and Morph were dating. Because we ask the important questions on The Mutant Ages.

Episode 3 - "Night of the Sentinels Part 2," X-Men: The Animated Series

At last, Magneto has arrived to introduce some moral complexity to the world of X-Men: The Animated Series! Maddy liked this episode, but Ryan thought it needed another draft. The show writers went wild with the literary references this time, so get ready for some Shakespeare quotes. This week's spotlight is on Magneto, who has a confusing and contradictory comic book history and is nonetheless one of Maddy and Ryan's favorite mutants!

Episode 4 -  "Enter Magneto," X-Men: The Animated Series

Professor X is a jerk. Ryan and Maddy keep telling you that, but in this episode, it's really astounding how much of a jerk he is! We've reached X-Men: The Animated Series' fourth episode, "Deadly Reunions," in which two pairs of boyfriends get reunited: Xavier and Magneto, plus Wolverine and Sabretooth. Except there's one little problem with shipping Sabretooth and Wolverine: it might be incest, depending on varying comic book canons. Oof. Anyway, we'll tell you all about it on this week's THE MUTANT AGES!

Episode 5 - "Deadly Reunions," X-Men: The Animated Series

Ryan and Maddy settle in for the debut episode of X-Men: Evolution! But first, some reminiscing about the political climate during the time period that this show came out, and also our own experiences as teenagers watching this show. X-Men: Evolution is much more overt about its queer analogy, and also, it's just a damn good show. Oh... by the way? Professor Xavier's still a piece of shit. Just saying.

"Strategy X," X-Men: Evolution

Enter Kitty Pryde and her valley girl accent on the second episode of X-Men: Evolution. Ryan and Maddy love Kitty even if she has, like, a totally tubular speech pattern. In this episode, Jean Grey and Xavier take the Blackbird to Illinois to recruit Kitty, but they soon get intercepted by teen bad boy Avalanche. Meanwhile, Cyclops and Nightcrawler are hot for teacher Wolverine... who is hot for Sabretooth, as usual.

"The X-Impulse," X-Men: Evolution

Rogue has finally arrived, sugah dumplings, and she has two moms. Two terrible, terrible moms. Professor Xavier would be a better parent, but not by a lot, because he still sucks in this episode. Rogue has to figure things out for herself, as usual. The results are still pretty bad-ass even though she's just a kid.

"Rogue Recruit," X-Men: Evolution

In the fourth episode of X-Men: Evolution, we get introduced to Fred "The Blob" Dukes. This starts out as a promising story about someone who pushes back against his bullies, but then it spirals off into fatphobic garbage and negative stereotypes about fat people. Maddy and Ryan would not recommend that you watch this episode! But please enjoy us tearing it apart... including Ryan's mic sounding a bit blown out the entire time because we had to use backup equipment (and also we were yelling, because we were mad, because this episode is fucked up). Stick around to the end of the episode for a very special segment featuring some insights about bullying via Ryan's sister, who works as a guidance counselor.

"Mutant Crush," X-Men: Evolution

Get ready for another conversation about queer villains, because Pietro Maximoff is here, he's queer, and he's got a big crush on Evan Daniels, a.k.a. Spyke. We're finally back on solid ground with an X-Men Evolution episode that isn't actively upsetting, plus it's a Storm-centric episode, since new character Spyke is her nephew. Ryan and Maddy get to analyze some hard-hitting queer metaphors in this one, as well as the Evan/Pietro ship that was probably popular with queer teen viewers at the time. Meanwhile, Xavier remains the show's most haunting antagonist.

"Speed and Spyke," X-Men: Evolution

In "Turn of the Rogue," Professor Xavier finally reveals that he's a huge liar, although he takes his damn time to do it. Still, we're surprised he did it at all! Rogue gets her big turn in the spotlight this episode, showing off her martial arts skills as well as the fact that she can drive a snowmobile(???). Cyclops gets to be the damsel in distress, and also, Magneto makes a great cameo in this one. X-Men Evolution is a fun show.
