This year, Metalheadz celebrates 20 years of pioneering releases and events. To celebrate this milestone, the Headz crew put together an all star line up for a massive party with artists representing the past, present and future of the label.

Emerging from relative obscurity, Dutch producer ‘Lenzman’ is fast making waves in the Drum & Bass world with his deep and soulful take on this underground genre. Influenced by Hiphop, Soul, Jazz and life in general, Lenzman’s music combines the organic grooves of yesteryears with the energy and forward thinking attitude of Drum & Bass music.

Since his first signings on the rapidly expanding Spearhead Records, Lenzman has feverishly been developing his sound. This led to his late 2008 / early 2009 releases: “Ever So Slightly” (on Integral), “Emeralds” (on Shogun Ltd) and his remix of Total Science classic “Soul Patrol” (on C.I.A.). These tracks have received widespread support, in clubs - from the scene’s most influential deejays - to daytime radio in the UK, and cemented his name as one of the fastest rising stars in this Drum & Bass thing.

With well-received gigs in Asia and throughout Europe, Lenzman’s deejaying has begun taking off as well. A deejay long before he took up production, it’s not surprising that his schedule has become, and will continue to become busier.

Recently Lenzman has stepped things up a notch, signing new music to respected labels such as Metalheadz, Soul:r, Critical, 31 Records, Shogun Ltd, Integral, C.I.A. and Subtitles. As well as working more with talented vocalists such as Jo-s and Riya, Lenzman also has collaborations in the pipeline with Lynx, Spy, Random Movement and there are even whispers of an album project.

London-born producer FD returns to The North Quarter with his new “Lanta Nights EP”, to be released on June 12th. After his masterful debut album “Better Days” - which transcended genres through a richly detailed palette - he now returns with a more compact piece: all killers, no fillers. Drawing influences from Dub, Hip Hop and Soul and mixing them with his London club roots, his growth as an artist and technician is clearly shown on this diverse but signature sounding 5 track EP. Lanta Nights kicks off with two vocal tracks: the first - Lie To You - is a delicate soulful track featuring Akemi Fox,with the second - The Feeling - a 90’s Hip Hop inspired jam featuring KinKai. The EP then dips into rolling Dub inspired science fiction mayhem for the final three tracks. Essential listening. 

“There isn’t a theme here really, because as an artist I find it important to express myself in a wide range of styles” FD explains. “It’s just me trying to put my own spin on what for me are ‘classic’ Drum & Bass fundamentals, expressing them in a contemporary way. I want to try and retain depth and honesty in my music, something that has been important to me in music since I first got into it.”

Then one of Med School’s youngest ever signings with his compilation feature ‘No More’, drum & bass head turner Whiney has stepped up to the plate for his first solo release since officially joining the Hospital Records roster. Reputable for supplying heavy duty sonics, ‘Bubblers Part One’ is a supreme development of the 25-year old’s highly sought signature sound. Home to four fresh cuts marking the start of his trailblazing new three-part ‘Bubblers’ series, Whiney’s latest EP proves he’s got the technique and flair to be a lead player in the scene.

Jungle-infused gritty stepper ‘No Good’ gets things rolling with old-school soundscapes and a captivating R&B style vocal. A fierce ascending bassline accompanied by raw breaks and crisp percussion hits explode into play, setting the track up to be a future classic that continues to carry the foundations of drum & bass into the sounds of today.

Featuring the vocals of mic veteran MC GQ, ‘Guernsey Airport Bubbler’ is straight-talking and deadly. Written in the lounge of Guernsey Airport amidst his busy touring schedule pre-lockdown, this quirky heavy hitter comes close to being a textbook audible representation of a true bubbler.

Minimal sounding and darker in vibe, ‘Black Ice’ offers a copious amount of distorted swells, a throbbing sub line and snappy drums which keep the tune swinging throughout. Icey by name but extremely hot in nature - proceed with caution! ‘November’ rounds off the EP as it draws closer to Whiney’s trip-hop and future bass oriented inspirations. Thumping kick drums, high pitched vocal chops and dreamy synth work are projected into a glistening beacon showcasing the far reaching ability of his skill as a creator.

With an impressive collection of releases under his belt on the recently closed Med School imprint, including ‘Stop The Clock / Breadcrumbs (feat. BOP)’, his ‘Waystone’ LP and debut album ‘Talisman’, it’s now time for Whiney to officially join the Hospital Records roster with his first solo release on the label as he continues to pave his way to becoming one of the most respected artists within drum & bass.
