One of the first songs written for ‘Reveal’ and given it’s the most 'poppy' song on the album, it’s no surprise this was the lead single and became a very popular live song. Played during most of the 2001 promo tour (21 times), it was only dropped when the band travelled to Japan and Australia without a full band, when it was dropped in favour of ‘I’ve Been High’.

It then went on to be played at every show in 2003, decreasing to 72% of shows in 2004, and returned to 100% for 2005. For 2008 it was played 68 times (84% of all shows), with it featuring in the setlist for the band’s final performance in Mexico City.

Fun fact: In the liner notes on the compilation ‘In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003’, in Peter’s usual dry wit he revealed the song title was taken from a movie that he didn’t think any of them had seen. He also said that it wasn’t until after they had released the song that he realized the first four chords in the verse are the same as the verse of ‘Driver 8’. This led Peter to exclaim ‘oh well’, in typical Peter fashion!

This performance is from 18 March 2005 in Osaka, Japan. At nearly every show Michael would proudly introduce it as their very first number one song in Japan, so it's apt we include a performance from there!
