In July 2010, I got an invitation to play at a small but neat festival named Folk Ibiza. It was my first visit to the island. I got to spin at a bunch of different locations, such as the Hostal Boutique Salinas, Sunset Ashram, and on the terrace at Space. I returned in September of the following year to play a set on Andy Wilson's show on Ibiza Sonica and a second time at the Hostal. I have not been back to Ibiza since. I recently came across this picture (taken at Cala Compte next to Sunset Ashram), which inspired me to make this mix. I tried to sonically capture the vibe that I felt back then. It includes some bona fide classics such as Ashra "Oasis“, Santana "Aqua Marine," and Jah Wobble & Holger Czukay "Hold On To Your Dreams," as well as tunes by Smith & Mudd, Begin, Quiet Village and more. Shuya Okino is a globally recognized DJ, producer, and cultural icon, best known as one half of Kyoto Jazz Massive, Japan’s pioneering jazz and electronic music duo. A passionate advocate for Japanese club culture, he skillfully blends the influences of jazz and electronic music, connecting audiences around the globe and across different musical landscapes. In addition to his work with Kyoto Jazz Massive, Okino is the founder of the renowned music venue The Room in Tokyo and is also an accomplished author and music curator.
On his second visit to our Livingroom, we sat down with Shuya to talk about his experience at Kasheme and his aspiration to create soundscapes for all kinds of public spaces.
