Here are two very close and loud thunder strikes from a storm on September 4, 2013. Recorded on my front deck with a Sennheiser MKH8040 ORTF microphone rig. It was very windy so I used a little RX2 to clean up the wind. Some light rain was falling also. Enjoy! -Frank

In August 2013 I had the opportunity to record a rare diesel powered train from the 1950's. This was a long time in coming but it finally happened thanks to a few friends and the really cool guys who were tasked with making the machine operational. Here is the back story: In 2011 during the recording of North Country Trains sound effects library I stumbled upon the old locomotive parked along the switching tracks in Ponderay Idaho. It look as though it was being refurbished but I was not sure. A few days later I asked around town and a friend of mine actually knew about the train and who was working on it. HE told me he would look into it and a few weeks later he called and told me it was going to start up very soon and would I be available to record on short notice. Of course I said "Oh yeah, I can be ready at a moments notice!"

Thunderstorm June 12 2012

This is what woke me up this morning at 4 AM. Robins and other birds putting on a rock concert 15 yards from the house. Most of my windows were left open during the night to cool the house and the sound level was really high for that time of day. I had to get up! I set up the MKH8040ST (XY 90) on my front lawn and enjoyed the birdsongs. I think it was their new single "Earthworms Wake Up, We Are Hungry". Here is a very close lightning strike I recorded this afternoon, July 20, 2012. A very powerful storm front moved in with thunder, strong winds and heavy rain. Just after the wind calmed down this lightning strike happened. Not even a half second between the flash of light and the sound. Recorded at 24-bit 96K with a Sennheiser MKH-8400ST in XY. The Rycote was soaked from the blowing rain even though it was under shelter from my roof. I live for this kind of stuff! Enjoy! -Frank

FREE Crazy Sound of the Week for March 22, 2013. I've been doing quite a bit of ORTF recording lately and this week the weather was perfect for recording in the field. The weather changed on a dime this week, one minute it was sunny and the next hail and rain stormed through. I recorded this downpour on my deck during a hail storm which then gave way to some heavy rain. The sound is mostly the drips hitting the wood deck. I am just loving the stereo image of this setup. Recorded with a MKH8040ST set in ORTF inside a ORTF Rycote system. It's FREE at 24/48 Enjoy! --Frank

Rain Drips Splatty MKH8040ST ORTF

I had nothing better to do today so I put together this compilation of a B-1B Lancer. This is a recording I made back in 1994. I was living in Seattle when they had a air show at King County Airport very close to downtown. Gone are the days of fly-bys over the city. This plane was seriously fast and loud. I was very close on the West side of the runway when this jet took off and ripped by a few times not very far over the runway. After it passed it would go straight up like a rocket. (It sounded like a rocket at times) -Enjoy! -Frank

The B-1B entered service in 1986 with the USAF Strategic Air Command as a nuclear bomber.

In the 1990s, the B-1B was converted to conventional bombing use. It first served in combat during Operation Desert Fox in 1998 and again during the NATO action in Kosovo the following year. The B-1B has supported U.S. and NATO military forces in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Lancer is the supersonic component of the USAF's long-range bomber force, along with the subsonic B-52 and Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit. The bomber is commonly called the "Bone" (originally from "B-One"). With the retirement of the General Dynamics/Grumman EF-111A Raven in 1998 and the Grumman F-14 Tomcat in 2006, the B-1B is the U.S. military's only active variable-sweep wing aircraft. The universe dropped a couple of horses next door to my ranch a while back. When the owners take one out and ride this one goes nuts. I call him the Crazy Horse. He was quiet for a while after I arrived to record him but then he ignored me and started to make lots of noise. He even kicked up once as he was running by me. Recorded at 24-Bit 192kHz with a Sennheiser MKH-8040 to a Sound Devices SD-702 recorder.

Sneaking into Magny's lighthouse, some of the first half of this piece was influenced by Air. The second half provided a subtle link back to the wurmwater music.

This thunder clap was recorded on June 29, 2013 in North Idaho at 24-Bit 96kHz with a matched stereo pair of MKH8040 microphones in XY and another in ORTF. The location of the microphones on my front deck facing North produced a MASSIVE clap the had so much subsonic low end that it nearly overloaded the microphone pre-amps. The first clap is the XY version and the second clap is the ORTF version. The sounds were edited in Pro-Tools and they were sync locked at the time of the event. This was one of the most heavy thunder claps I have ever experienced during the 15 years I have been recording thunder sounds. Enjoy! -Frank
