Berlin duo The/Das release their sophomore album, Exit Strategies, on Life And Death. The absorbing 12-tracker is the result of a period of searching that finds the new line-up of Fabian Fenk and Philipp Koller combine multiple ideas, layers, fragments and sounds and refine their distinct idea of techno tenderness. It makes for a soothing and escapist 60 minute listen that works as well at home, on headphones, as it does loud in the club.

Sonic Jesus - Dead Man

Multi Culti cultural co-honcho Dreems returns to conjure some of the best vibes currently imaginable with Rose Bay, an EP that doubles as a preview of his forthcoming album, Diamond Bay. The music evokes the sunny innocence of his youth as a future label owner growing up in Sydney, before he plunged into a long hero’s journey into nightlife, from which he would eventually emerge with wisdom, understanding, and incredibly shredded abs. 

Named after a suburb on the edge of Sydney Harbour, “Point Piper” is a slow-building epic, providing a lucid glimpse into the same Cetacean Worldmind that has saved Axl Rose’s life on any number of occasions. Meanwhile, “Milk Beach” invites listeners to imagine themselves floating on the bay, placidly chugging Bamboo Shoot Quik to the placid chug of this low-BPM chill-out gem. 

“Milk Beach” also gets a remix from Ecuadorian folklorica master Nicola Cruz, who surprised everyone in the banging community by turning in one of his bangingest efforts yet. Finally, the EP is capped by an 11-minute acid-disco remix of “Coasters Retreat” by Berlin super-producer Sascha Funke, to date the only parent on the Multi Culti roster. Father’s make up 23 percent of potential record buyers, and while you may not like those odds, you do have to respect them.

Today, breath-taking post-classical artist Poppy Ackroyd shares her brand new single ‘Paper’ taken from her first full-length album with One Little Indian Records, Resolve – out early 2018. A classically trained pianist, violinist, producer, and composer, Ackroyd turned heads in the neo-classical world with her previous works Escapement and Feathers, as well as her involvement in Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts).

Having played alongside giants of the genre, Hauschka and Nils Frahm, the unique musician has returned, newly signed to Bjork’s label One Little Indian Records, fresh off the back of a mini-album Sketches, and set to release her brand new self-produced full-length record - her most ambitious and progressive piece of work to date.

Straight out of Matlock comes Patawawa a trio whose blend of blood-pumping beats, glittered guitar riffs and bass lines that bite results in irrepressibly infectious DIY disco. The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child.

With such a choice name, it’s no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven’s calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o’-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions.

‘Traveler’ opens the album all redolent, beat-minded and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a “solitary man” lost to “green oblivion”. Similarly, ‘Her Majesty II’ glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst ‘Bertha’ slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space.

The Green Child are adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realise and build to their potential. Tracks like ‘Walking Distance’ (featuring Al Montfort on saxophone) and ‘New Years Eve’ are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band’s cover of ‘Marie Elene’ (by Keith Pearson) and closing track ‘Destroyer’ are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don’t want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower?

‘The Green Child’ is due for release on January 12th through Upset The Rhythm on 180g black vinyl, accompanied by some spirited sleeve design by James Vinciguerra.
