The Mission

Channeling peak-era dark garage ambience and contemporary trance stomper technology in the same breath, on their debut collaboration Silhouette (AKA Vision of 1994) and Kobayashi Maru join forces on Amphibian Records for The Mission, a 4-track EP that airlifts the snarl and frayed temper of early dubstep into the psychedelic frontiers of modern dance music.

On the A1, the title track’s driving 140BPM two-step thunder, scored with doomy metallic bellowing reminiscent of early Distance and a rolling bassline right out of Big Apple’s playbook; on the flip, Last Transmission’s frosty atmospherics and crisper-than-snow UKG-inflected percussion, a sharp retort on every third beat superimposed onto a trance-techno model.

Two lower-tempo cuts kiss each runout groove, with no lessening up in sound pressure. Winter Outpost is at the last of its tensile strength, neo-noir synths pulled skin tight over a frame of sharpened breakbeat, while End Credits shakes it all loose with a serpentine beat...  more

“Tropism” is the unseen force that guides movement which is the instinctual pull toward something greater. It governs how plants stretch toward light, how bodies sway to rhythm, and how thoughts drift in response to invisible stimuli. This EP attempts to capture those motions, translating them into sound: gradual shifts, unconscious reactions, and the tension between control and inevitability.

Each track embodies a different form of movement, echoing organic patterns in nature and
the fluid progression of life. From subtle timing shifts to the primal surge of collective rhythm, Tropism explores the forces, natural or internal, that push all things forward.

Where Ethos speaks to capturing attention through passion and presence, Tropism speaks to
the underlying forces that compel us to move, respond, and feel. In essence, the EP can be seen as sonic rhetoric: each track a sensory argument made not with words, but with textures, tension, and motion.
