Dedicated to my children.  The verses are written in order of their births:  Caitlyn, Renin, Cainin, all born in Summer, and only 2 weeks apart from each other between 6/25-7/10  (1998/2015/2019).

Kaitiaki o te Whenua - Guardians of the Earth, is a reflection of my deep connection to the land, the ocean, and the old stories of my people flowing through them. It’s a Māori folk ballad, gentle and soulful, a melodic form of lament that speaks to joy and longing. The melody moves like the tides, ebbing and flowing, carried by the whispers of the wind and the pulse of the earth.

At its core, the song is about being a kaitiaki, a guardian of the earth (whenua) and the ocean (moana). The soft reggae percussion underlines this connection, like the heartbeat of nature, steady and grounding. It reminds me that, just like the ocean’s rhythm, our responsibility to protect the natural world never ceases.

Through every note, I hope to convey the stories of my ancestors, the strength of my cultural heritage, and the beauty of the wild places I love. This song is my call for all of us to listen to the earth, honor its rhythms, and take up the role of its guardians.
