We are teaming up with Listen! Festival again for the 3rd year in a row to curate a stage presenting artists from the past and new talent for the future. This year’s promotional tool is something tactile and very common in the Basic Moves world… It’s a 12” vinyl record!!!


!!! ALERT !!! THIS IS A CHARITY PROJECT !!!
ALL OF THE BENEFITS OF THIS RECORD WILL GO TO Liaison Antiiprohibitionniste (www.laliaison.org), an association for people affected by drug policies. It brings together those who are confronted with the problems caused by the prohibition of certain drugs. All are convinced, from their experience, of the need to implement an alternative policy to prohibitionism.


On the A side we have 2 tracks from Casablanca-born but now Brussels (!!!) based Driss Bennis aka OCB aka Dj.Booth from the now already legendary Moroccan label Casa Voyager. The first track is a proper banger for the peak time hours of the after hour, while the second track on the A-side is a broken beat stepper like only he can make. Keep the funk alive Driss and welcome to Brussels!

On the B-side are 2 tracks by Basic Moves’ own Walrus dating from 8 years ago coming from a lost demo asked by a big UK label but that never left his hard drive. B1 was made barefoot and is heavily inspired by early Omar S and the rougher sounds of US house. And the B2 is an ode to the city he loves and hates at the same time. “Free city light” between a smile and a tear. Brussels.

There was a thick fog which hung beside the tree in the middle of the desert, they watched it from afar. It was not safe to roam outside here, amidst the wilderness ,for there were wild creatures and beasts which might eat you alive given the chance. The sand was a dense hybrid yellow, some might call it gold but for him that was not the case. The car whizzed across the outback headed for a town miles away in the distance, the engine coughed and spluttered beneath the heat of the day. They were all under strain... 

City Bowl Wax Network is a label based in Cape Town, South Africa. The label hit us up with two EP's of exquisite quality and precision that we were wholeheartedly blown away by. Not something that we get to say terribly often. This one comes with a gold stamp, or should we say a hybrid yellow stamp of approval.

New Wave Podcast 030: Kessler

It seemed fitting to kick start our 2021 programme with Kessler, who in 2020 during a year of near-continuous crisis enjoyed his biggest success. With a string of successful releases on labels like Yellow Island and Born Sleepy and mixes on platforms like HOR Berlin and BBC 1Extra he was able to project his work to a larger audience. Most significantly, though, he realised more fully than ever his unique personality as an artist, homing in a sound that's very bass and breaks driven, which he admits allows him more creative freedom. 

Anyone who knows Kessler personally will understand that the success he has endured is certainly a by-product of the many hours he has spent learning and understanding every aspect of the electronic music scene. Back in his hometown of Belfast, he regularly threw parties and became involved with a lot of the top events and festivals; including AVA - which he then played at in 2019. It is also evident that the amount hours put in the studio is translatable to the quality of music he is producing today. He even admits that he gets more enjoyment and satisfaction out of sitting down and making a track than mixing.  However this hasn't stopped him from accumulating a resume that any aspiring artist would envy, becoming a regular in the Belfast scene and also oversees. 

With his move to Rotterdam in late 2019, he challenged to himself to go out of comfort zone and sample a  culture different to what he is used to. Now, although due to the pandemic he wasn't able to embed himself fully into the scene and become a regular, we have no doubt that he will be able to once the scene is up and running again. In our interview we discuss how we stayed productive during the pandemic, why he prefers making breakbeat and what he looks for in a label in which he releases music on.
