Mario & Timnah (Hybrid) at Landskron3

This contribution is a very special one, as it marks a new chapter in The Observatory’s sound… 

We will always be a home for ambient and experimental sounds. But, moving forward, we will also be exploring our love for dance music, with a particular focus on the deep end.

To begin this new journey and warm things up, we are so happy to welcome back Timnah, who gifts us with a two-hour recording of her set at Omen Wapta, ADE’24. A mind-bending traversal through ambient, drone, and halftime experiments, exploring the liminal spaces between the listening room and the dance floor.

Timnah lives, works and feeds the cats in the Northwestern extremities of Switzerland. Brought up in her parents’ jazz clubs and deeply influenced by her brother’s love for dub and soundsystem culture, she started DJing just after the massively feared Millenium Bug had threatened to offset our relation to time and space. Dedicated to drawing her own map of late 20th century sonic landscapes, she spent the early 2000s exploring 90s electronics including breakbeat, triphop, ambient techno, drum&bass, house and jungle. After a short but sweet excursion into producing in the early 2010s, Timnah dedicated herself fully to spinning the wheels and transversing genres, gravitating towards her current signature sound that spans immersive sound baths and intergalactic carpet rides in half-time. Timnah is a member of Amenthia Recordings and a recent addition to the A Walking Contradiction Collective.

Embodiment 069 - Agonis

This week we land in Valencia and spend a moment with Ilayruni, a 19-year-old with an ear for rhythm and space, still shaping his sound but already showing a feel for nuance. Earlier this year, he released Mountain Flyers EP on Sungate, a label with which we’ve worked closely over the years, known for its focus on various shades of techno and a taste for forward-thinking sounds.

His hour-long set is made entirely from his own material, and it leans into the shadows. It starts slow and murky, with a dense, eerie atmosphere that unfolds with intent. The progression is subtle but steady, each track steps a little deeper into the fog, each rhythm adds a sharper edge. There’s tension in the way it builds, but no drama.

There’s a clear affection for polyrhythms and off-center grooves, and a careful balance between control and drift. The textures shift, the pace grows, but the mood stays intact, claustrophobic at times, even hypnotic. It’s not polished to perfection, and that’s part of the charm. You hear someone exploring, reaching, figuring it out in real time. A young producer following instinct, not trends. We’re curious where that path leads.

Basel’s Timnah joins our series with a long-anticipated recording from last year’s inaugural pe:rsona, an intimate gathering from the minds at Positive Education. Over the years Timnah has established a reputation for expansive and visionary selections without equal, lending her voice to the beloved Amentia and A Walking Contradiction collectives and leading audiences into captivating unknowns worldwide. Recorded live in the French countryside at the peak of summer, Timnah’s set smolders with delicate tension, lacing outward like tendrils upon shattering glass. An intense, inward-folding moment graciously shared. Thanks Timnah!

In a world hooked on instant likes and endless scrolls, where festival lineups are often built for clicks more than for ears, there’s still a place that pushes all that noise into the background. It sits somewhere off the grid, far from signal bars and push notifications, a pocket of the world where music still feels sacred.

You drive for hours into the Spanish mainland, trading highways for dusty roads and the smell of pine. And then you arrive at this gathering that’s not quite a festival. “Celebration” fits better. A celebration of music, connection, good energy and the rare joy of forgetting who’s “headlining” and just letting the sound carry you wherever it wants.

It’s friends, and friends of friends. People whose names you might see on record sleeves or festival flyers, but here they’re just part of the crowd. No green rooms, no special wristbands. No one’s counting bar sales or stressing over ticket numbers. It’s purely about the music, the real reason most of us fell in love with this scene in the first place.

From Friday afternoon to a very late Sunday, the music rolls non-stop. Daytime means dancing upright under blue skies. By night, things stretch into horizontal territory in a magical cabaña, where ambient and experimental sets ripple through the dark. Every DJ seems to arrive knowing precisely what belongs in their timeslot, crafting an arc so seamless you start questioning whether sleep is even worth it. Monday comes for you looking like your parachute didn’t open, but the grin on your face says otherwise. And the moment you leave, you’re already asking yourself how you’re supposed to wait a whole year to do it again.

This hidden corner of paradise is called Perpendicular Festival, or Perpen, for short, a brainchild of the crew behind Espacio Perpendicular in Madrid. 

This year was Delayed’s first time joining the adventure, and we came back determined to share pieces of what made it unforgettable. Over the next months, we’ll be rolling out sets that capture different moods and times of the weekend, hoping to transmit even a fraction of the magic in those woods.

We’re starting with a burst of energy: Madrid’s best-kept secret, Rachael, who took over on Sunday night. By then, the dancefloor was running on adrenaline alone, and as darkness settled in, she shifted things into high gear. After Sciama’s mind-bending trip, Rachael stepped up and commanded the space, unleashing a set where syncopated beats, UK breaks, and halftime, all collided in perfect chaos. The pine trees caught every echo. The crowd surged with new life. It was one of those sets that reminds you why underground music scenes will always survive and why you stay awake just a few hours longer even when your legs are begging for mercy.

Delayed x Perpendicular: Rachael

Fresh off the release of his outstanding album ‘Berlin’ we welcome Felix K - a true purveyor of sophisticated, deep electronic music. His work explores the fringes of techno, jungle, dub, and ambient, building immersive sound worlds that defy easy categorization. Known for his meticulous approach to production and his ability to weave complex narratives through sound, Felix K has carved out a unique space for himself in the global underground scene.

For this marathon journey, Felix K delivers a masterclass in patience and precision, guiding listeners through a three-hour odyssey that is as introspective as it is rhythmically compelling. The mix is a testament to his expansive musical knowledge and his ability to connect seemingly disparate genres into a cohesive, flowing narrative.

In his own words: "The mix was recorded in my studio in Berlin. Beginning with slower Dub Techno, it slips into the early, minimalist 85/170 Drum-and-Bass era, showcasing plenty of those formative highlights before closing with authentic Amen Breaks combining with a sound design that actually anticipates the vibe of some of today’s darker techno productions."
