Wadandi Spring is a new sound work built on a foundation of field recordings from Wadandi Booja, the furthest South Western point of Australia. This region is a global biodiversity hotspot, an ancient land at the meeting of the Indian and Southern Oceans. An ancient land under threat.

Surrounded by and driven by water. Winter cold fronts from Southern Ocean bring heavy rain which ends up in the streams and rivers that traverse through old growth Eucalypt forests. Some water seeps into the ancient limestone geology, re-emerging from underground springs or laying still in unique subterranean caves. 

The climate has changed. Winters are drier. Significantly since the 1970’s. They’re quiet too. So, when the winter rains come, the local frogs, birds, and reptiles make the most of the opportunities. Its noisy too.

The sound world comes alive. Its raw nature with little trace of human interference. Under the water an array of small invertebrates buzz around, emitting a crackling soundscape. Insects skip the surface, food for the many frogs heard communicating via their calls. The chorus intensity shackled to prevailing temperatures. 

In the skies the bird life is rich. Smaller wrens skirt around in the low shrub, honeyeaters make the most of the dense wildflower awakening, whilst hawks circle above for their next kill. 

Like much of Earth’s remaining wild spaces, Wadandi Booja is under threat from population growth, climate change and extinction. This new work aims to capture a fleeting moment of a ecosystem’s soundscape, in its beauty and fragility.
