The Shaolin Afronauts is an instrumental afrobeat band based in Adelaide, Australia. There music is inspired by various sounds, from Fela Kuti's afrobeat to Sun Ra's free jazz, to Mulatu Astatke's Ethio-jazz and Afro-Cuban percussion rhythms. Founded in 2008 by fascination with Afrobeat and improvised music, the group began its career alongside The Transatlantics. Robert Owens ) is an American songwriter, record producer, DJ and singer, best known for his work with the Chicago house group Fingers Inc. in the mid-1980s. As a solo artist, he has placed several songs on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, two of which hit number-one: "I'll Be Your Friend" (1992).

Though electronica has typically been a producer's medium (and the few vocalists who succeed are usually women)Robert Owens became one of the people associated with the late-1980s golden era of Chicago house. Born in Ohio, United States, Robert Owens grew up singing in church, but years later, he was working as a DJ in 1985, when he met Chicago producer Larry Heard. The pair formed Fingers Inc., along with Ron Wilson, and they released a few singles ("You're Mine"/"It's Over") plus the 1988 album, Another Side. The group disbanded quickly, as Heard's burgeoning solo-production career (as Mr. Fingers)

Wacław Zimpel works with a diverse array of music. The Warsaw-based musician/producer started out playing free jazz with artists like Ken Vandermark, Hamid Drake and Joe McPhee. Later, he went from minimalism inspired albums (Lines) to folk-trance collaborations (Saagara) to synth-buzzing solo releases, along the way developing a vivid electronic music language through collaborations with British electronic artists James Holden and Sam Shackleton (amongst others). The New York Times has aptly called him a “musical chameleon.” We are super excited to have an exclusive interview on The Vinyl Collector with the Poland Genius.

Today, we’re sitting down with Belgian DJ and music producer Tristan Jong, better known as Gratts, a key figure in the European electronic music scene for over two decades. Since starting his journey in the late ‘90s, Gratts has developed an ever-evolving, genre-defying repertoire rooted in house but extending far beyond it. His extensive career has taken him from Belgium to Berlin, where he spent eight years honing his craft, and now to Australia, where he splits his time between producing, touring, and running his label *Be Strong Be Free*.

Known for his deep-digging vinyl sets and his ability to capture moments on the dancefloor, Gratts has consistently pushed the boundaries of electronic music. Whether through his collaborations with legendary artists like Chicago's Robert Owens or his highly acclaimed solo releases such as "Sun Circles" and "Pretty Lights," Gratts’ productions have garnered support from industry heavyweights like François K, Laurent Garnier, and Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy.

With several projects in the works, including new EPs on Canadian label Bienvenue and Lisbon’s Inner Balance, as well as the launch of a new 7-inch series on his own label, Gratts continues to shape the future of electronic music. We’re excited to dive into his musical journey, creative process, and what’s next for him in 2024 and beyond.

After learning several musical instruments whilst growing up in Adelaide, it was DJ-ing that eventually satisfied Norsicaa’s far-reaching interest and taste in music. Relocating to the UK over 20 years ago, she hosted a long-running primetime slot on Soho Radio until 2023, as well as on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM. She has contributed several mixes to My Analog Journal, as well as Phonica Records, HHV Records, Dublab, The Vinyl Factory and more. Norsicaa has also performed live on Boiler Room, alongside KOKOKO! and Zakia, with her set gaining acclaim from music fans and DJs alike. In her eight years as General Manager for the respected independent record label, Soundway Records, she delivered over a hundred new music releases including her 2024 compilation Ayo Ke Disco. For this project, she tapped into her extensive collection of Asian records to curate tracks that reflect Southeast Asia's dynamic nightlife and musical identities.

Leading his own band from the drum chair, Alex’s music pushes a fresh rhythmic and dynamic realm of live dance music leaning on nu-jazz, deep-house, broken beat, DnB, funk, and experimental sounds. The band has recently featured at Wellington Jazz Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, SXSW Sydney, WOMADelaide, JazzMontez Frankfurt and various clubs across Europe and Australia.

Jude Alexander has over twenty five years experience performing live at premium music festivals, clubs and high-end corporate events. 
Most recently he has brought his Dj talents to Richmond hotspot, "The Aviary" and CBD icon "Bar Lourinha." 

Over the years Jude has consistently pushed and developed his unique sound. Versatility is one of his best traits and influences are drawn from artists like Francois Kervorkian, DJ Harvey, Dave Angel and Laurent Garnier.

Jude’s has a massive collection of Vinyl and Cd’s that consists of Afro beat –Dub-Disco, Indie -Pop " Funk & Soul and World Music, while simultaneously touching upon, Sharon Jones, Can, Happy Mondays and James Blake and every in between.

Not only has Jude mastered being a Dj, in 2004 Jude started producing, playing live electronicia with long time friend Michael Welford. The live act would be called “Fenetik”, and they continued on bringing there deep progressive soundscape to music festivals and electronica club nights throughout Australia.

Throughout his career Jude Alexander has supported major international artists playing alongside; Brennan Green (US), Richie Hawtin (can) Derrick May(US), Jeff Mills(US), James Holden(UK).

Graeme Park (UK) 
Graeme is the story of the evolution of dance music and club culture itself. Graeme found himself working in a Nottingham record shop called Selectadisc in the early 1980s, when the very first house records began to filter through from Chicago, Detroit and New York. When the shop’s owner opened a nightclub, it was only natural he should turn to Graeme to select the discs. Determined to showcase this new style of music, his reputation as a house pioneer soon brought him to the attention of Mike Pickering at The Haçienda in Manchester, who asked him to cover for him while he went on holiday in 1988. Simply put, there was no-one else in the country who could do the job. The Summer of Love followed, and Parky quickly became one of the biggest names on the emerging dance scene. Aside from his nine year residency at The Haç, he was one of the first British DJs to play places like Australia, South America, the USA, Asia and beyond as well as producing and remixing tracks for the dancefloor, including The Brand New Heavies, Inner City, Eric B & Rakim, New Order, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and others.
