Hoss Zaré moved to San Francisco after being exiled from Iran in 1986. He says when you come to this country, you’re on your own. He remembers surviving on canned tuna and coffee in college. Today, he owns the city’s popular Zaré at Fly Trap restaurant.

Here's the latest First Days story, a project inspired by Philadelphia’s <a href="http://www.saadigitalarchive.org/firstdays">South Asian American Digital Archive</a>, which collects stories from immigrants from that region of the world about their first days in America. We hear from Deepak Singh, who moved to the United States from India in 2003. He now lives in South Bend, Indiana, and is a writer and journalist.
