The Humanities Institute at UC Santa Cruz is a hub for academic research, cross-discipline collaboration, and public engagement. We incubate ideas and foster innovation by funding projects, centers, and research clusters that enable faculty and students to work on some of the biggest problems of our day.
The Institute is a source, resource, and force for Humanities-based inquiry and engagement with world events. We’re passionate about expanding the field of Humanities scholarship with digital tools and an interdisciplinary focus. And we believe strongly that the core subjects of the Humanities—philosophy, history, language and literature—should be accessible to everyone. That’s why we’re committed to engaging with the broadest community possible—from first-generation undergraduate students, to local residents, to anyone interested in compelling ideas and making sense of this increasingly complex world.

As part of the the University of California system, the Institute is able to leverage the resources of the finest public university system in the world. Part of what makes the UC system of universities great—and what makes us different from so many universities around the globe—is the central role of the Humanities in our educational experience, not only in the curriculum but also in the vibrant intellectual life of our campuses. Here at UC Santa Cruz, we possess an especially rich tradition of innovation, creativity, and collaboration in the Humanities.

Formed in early 2015, Humanities are a four-piece band that combine musical ferocity with thoughtful lyrics resulting in angry, poetic dirges. Created out of a desire to collectively make loud music, Humanities set out to write and record a few short months after their inception, resulting in a summer weekend spent with Matt Connell at Northwood Studios. The songs captured weave dissonant melodies with heavy hitting riffs, and lyrics musing on the world itself in crisis.

Exploring some of the strange terrain in this world of techno-alienation, their debut EP focuses on our all too familiar, yet strange relationships with things like social media and communicative labour, and our dependence on various technologies and institutions in sharing our experiences with others in the world. The imagery and themes are related to our collective efforts — and failures — at communication and community.

It opens with the driving post-hardcore sound of “Century of the Selfie,” a bitter meditation on the false promises of social media and connectivity, and then moves through the claustrophobia of “Come Outside” formed from varying strands of punk and hardcore. The dystopic visions of work and leisure in “Belly Full of Fear” combine with noisy, dense guitars that shine with a dissonant melody. The EP concludes with the somewhat more optimistic, yet crushing dirge rock of “Your Dreams are My Dreams,” a song that finds a certain communicative and creative possibility in that apparently most solitary, and unproductive, activity: dreaming. Through dreams we find a shared energy that runs deeply into the individual, seeping into it and pushing out beyond it, into others and to the world.

Housed at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Environmental Humanities Initiative (EHI) is composed of faculty and students from across the arts and humanities who focus on a range of environmental issues. With over 70 faculty members from 24 Departments, Programs, and Schools teaching over 300 unique graduate and undergraduate courses, UC Santa Barbara is unrivaled in its commitment to the environmental humanities.

Among other issues, our members work on climate change, the emergence of environmental thinking, the cultural/environmental implications of urbanization, histories of land use, natural resource management, environmental politics, non-human/human relations, environmental and social justice within a global rather than national context, and the political impact of institutions, networks, and regimes on bodies and the biosphere.

The goal of the EHI is to foster this work and interest in it.

It has a core of permanent research-focused academics and postdoctoral researchers working on specific projects, and hosts short stay Faculty and Visiting Fellows.
