Phonica ventures down to South London for its 123rd mix in our long running series. Leila Beesley also known by everyone as Chinese Daughter has been stretching the sounds of original, new, and future jungle records alongside the sounds of bass-lead old school rave, future hardcore, and breaks. While also working behind the scenes at Warp records, taking to her regular show on Rinse FM and repping the Swamp 81 crew; you can also find Beesley at parties all over the UK and further afield(not forgetting her smashing set at our 20th anniversary at fabric last year). The set she has supplied for us here is no different. Mixed on all vinyl Chinese Daughter here showcases a broad spectrum of 2010's bass gold, kicking drums and party going anthems all built together in a beautifully seamless narrative. A rare club mix from the ever-evolving artist, with 90 minutes of shadowy, atmospheric pressure.

Music's therapeutic value is often linked to relaxation—gongs, singing bowls and the like. Dense passages of foggy droning and eerie static aren't traditionally considered restorative, but Laurel Halo makes a pretty good case for it.

The Detroit-born, Los Angeles-based musician's abstract, often improvised productions are heavy on sound design and emotional climax. Driven by atmosphere rather than rhythm, they push listeners to grapple with their innermost insecurities, fears and dreams. "I'm lucky my music has helped people through crises," Halo once told Discwoman. It's easy to see why.

Since her 2010 debut King Felix, Halo has built a stunningly diverse catalogue of classically-informed records. A multi-instrumentalist—piano, violin, guitar, keys—her sharpest instrument is arrangement. Inspired by the surrealism of Italo Calvino and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, her releases, from Atlas to Behind The Green Door, unfold with slow-burning narrative and dense emotional weight. Her soundworlds are layered and labyrinthine—an architectonic space where self-reflection happens almost by force.

Even in the club, the sought-after composer excels in immersion. Her sets extend the expressionist palette of her records, trading traditional rhythm for tension, space and surprise. It’s no wonder she takes a genre-agnostic approach to the dance floor—her deep roots in freeform radio began at WCBN-FM in Michigan, followed by Berlin Community Radio, Rinse FM, and now a regular show on NTS.

RA.992 stitches foggy ambient loops, propulsive techno, mutant percussion and heady left turns with care. Tracks from DJ Rush, Octave One and Eddie Fowlkes nod to her Midwestern heritage, balanced out by deeper, psychedelic fare from the likes of Polygonia and Cousin. It's the mark of an artist revealing both deep curiosity and a precise hand as a selector. Rare, indeed.

Scott Marshall is a London-based DJ and producer. His debut 4-track EP, titled Scott Marshall demonstrates a distinctive UK Booty sound. Early supporters include DJ Deeon, John Heckle, Mark Forshaw and Jamie Russell. Born and raised in South London through the 80s, Scott started buying records when he was 16 amassing a large collection of House, Techno, Disco and Funk. His DJ style is quick-fire mixing Techno, House, Booty and Disco, pushing the groove and keeping the floor on the front foot. He is a resident DJ for Third Ear. A regular on various underground scenes through the late 90s and 00s, Scott spent his youth in parties such as Lost, Renegade Hardware and Kung Fu. He was influenced early on by artists and DJs such as Steve Bicknell, DJ Deeon, Jeff Mills, The Scientist, Loud-e, Roy Ayers, Lord Finesse and Gang Starr, and has a particular affection for labels such as Dance Mania and Cosmic Recordings.

Walking through the city there was little which made him smile, noisy traffic roared past and the sound of sirens filled the air as the steam billowed from the drains by the sidewalk. This was what life in the big smoke was supposed to be, hectic, hazy and horrid. It wasn't a happy place but a frightening maze built up of robust concrete, iron and glass. Bars played music loudly out into the open night air as some danced in shiny windows - at least they looked happy. He sat at the bus stop and waited for his number to roll up - on the wall opposite somebody had painted some graffiti. "Life's Good" it read...

Perhaps, he smiled. 

Silvestre is a producer very much in demand at the moment with a number of releases popping off on the likes of Padre Himalaya, Secretsundaze and Diskotopia. This is his latest, a drawn out affair with power and punch for Meda Fury.
