Third Ear's Detroit Beatdown series was instrumental in redefining the perception of Detroit electronic music abroad. Now we come to the final Detroit Beatdown release. Four Detroit artists giving us as good an ep as any of the releases in the series. The tracks by Mike Clark and Rick Wade rank amongst their best, for sure. DJT-1000, a Detroit producer and DJ known for some of the city's hardest Techno, surprises with a stripped-back groove that is pure electronic Funk. Wrapping up the ep is Scott Ferguson's A Groove, a heavy skanking groove with that classic Beatdown rawness. Before the Detroit Beatdown Volume One compilation in October 2002 was released, Detroit was known primarily for Techno. Moodymann, Kelli Hand, and Terrence Parker were the only artists from Detroit known in Europe and Japan who were thought to make House music (Theo Parrish was not regarded as a House producer). Detroit Beatdown Volume One changed all that. The Detroit Beatdown series introduced many of the Detroit artists who are now well known representatives of the music scene of the City of Detroit; Delano Smith, Norm Talley, Keith Worthy, Pirahnahead, Mike Clark, to name the most well-known. Kelli Hand came to the attention of new generations of DJs and fans through the Detroit Beatdown series of releases on Third Ear. Drivetrain (Derrick Thompson), DJ Minx, Reggie Dokes, Ibex (Tony Ollivierra) all delivered classic tracks through the series. Artist's such as Patrice Scott had the door opened for them by The Detroit Beatdown sound. Theo Parrish's Falling Up on Detroit Beatdown Volume One has become one of his signature tracks. The truth is, The original Detroit Beatdown DJs, Mike Clark, Norm Talley, and Delano Smith, never only played House music. The Beatdown sound of Detroit was very inclusive, playing Techno releases from the city all the while, and often long before they were picked up in Europe and beyond. As an example, anyone who experienced the Detroit Beatdown DJs will know that Norm Talley was one of the first DJs playing Omar S records some time before Omar S was well-known. Detroit Beatdown tracks have come to be regarded as Detroit House music. Yet, in the city, music is just music and the genre boundaries applied outside the community of artists aren't used or recognized. This is most evident in the playlists of the Detroit Beatdown DJs. But this fact is also there to be heard on all the Detroit Beatdown releases.

Third Ear podcast December 2013 packed full of tracks coming early in 2014 and tracks from the end of this year.  We hit the ground running in 2014 with two releases planned for January. Spanish producer, Denite leads with four bumping grooves that make up the Party Music ep. Next is El Prevost and D.Ham’s Allez Ally which Apollonia have been caning and opened their Fabric 70 mix CD with. Dan Ghenacia and Shonky have given the track a new groove and set up D.Ham's wonderful flow to reach many more dance floors with two hard and funky remixes. There are two tracks from Filippo Blasi Foglietti’s deep and trippy John Nixon Memorial ep, the wonderful, hypnotic Mask from MGUN's recent Some Tracks ep, and three amazing ‘out-there’ joints from Detroit’s :Brownstudy, from the album Life Well Lived which is released in March. Wbeeza’s weapon War Fear makes a rare appearance, although maybe not so rare as it still gets charted regularly. Finally, Sarrass’s brilliant A New Day, which we included in this podcast because his debut album, titled Dirty Gear will be released in April.

:Brownstudy, real name: Jason Hogans, comes with an adventurous style and musicality that has caught the attention of DJs and tastemakers worldwide.

Hogans’ first impacted through Detroit’s electronic music scene, impressively debuting on Carl Craig's Planet E in ’98 with an EP called Peter And The Rooster. But his most enticing identity came after his experimentations with folk, cut & paste, minimal, punk, ambient, glitch, soul, reggae/dub, jazz, hip hop and prog-whatever. Debut album Tell Me More About Bubbles in 2005 under the new moniker :Brownstudy came out on Guy McCreery's Third Ear label. Jason returns to Third Ear for this next LP, Life Well Lived, with 11 tracks that further showcase his polyrhythmic and experimental electronica.

:Brownstudy (don't ignore the :colon) covers all styles in trying to convey what he wants to say. "I've been doing music in some way since elementary school” says Hogans. “Violin, trumpet, piano/keys, electronics, percussion, vocals, etc. Some formal training (classical theory, jazz theory, jazz improv, sight singing/ear training, creative writing), but ultimately relying on my ear & heart.”

The record features some truly nonsecular sounds, steeped in impressive analog blends. His masterful and quirky thesis in beat programming particularly notarises instrumental tracks such as ‘Wax Suckas (Decline)’, ‘Dead Doldrums’ and ‘Red Dreaded Stepchild’, in a way that the most seasoned beatmakers like Cut Chemist, Mr Scruff and Luke Vibert can beguile. With an extra smattering of Herbie Hancock-esque progression, charm and soul, it all adds up to an impossibly endearing album. An album with a social conscience at its heart, but never veering into soapbox lecturing.

Never one to avoid an issue or confront a taboo Hogans has carved an album that puts him at the forefront of rappers with real lyrical ambition. Yes, his beats and grooves are original, and his sounds are unusual, but ultimately it’s his words and his delivery that marks :Brownstudy out. He spouts potently intelligent and honourable lyrics in tracks like the title ‘Life Well Lived’, and ‘Towards Improvement’ where the lyrics are further maintained by a bed of indolent vocal loops. For more impact, a sprinkling menace is called upon in his words, but staying true to his playful character it works to display his facetious and cheeky streak perfectly. Tracks like ‘Bitchslappin’ Motherfuckas To Hell’ and ‘Glorious Future’ are where the record really harks to the warmly mischievous traits of hip-hop, just like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and De La Soul. But nobody tells it how it is and how it should be quite like :Brownstudy.

"I'm spanking protocol" he says. “I still act like an 18-year-old and pass it off as eccentricity,” coos Jason. “I’m proud of that. Life’s too short to posture like you’re dignified. Nobody’s anything but carbon, water and a set of circumstances.”

Eloquent and self deprecating, shot through with insight and humour. Charismatic and critical. And self critical. There isn’t much to dislike about :Brownstudy and Jason Hogans, and he is clearly onto something in the pursuit to lead a Life Well Lived.

Since his first EP debuted in 2010, Ross Evans has been building a steady catalogue of solid releases on labels such as Get Physical, Saved Records, Cocoon Recordings, and Cécille Records, just to name a few.  Having already attained widespread respect from DJs around the world in just a few short years, Ross has managed to firmly establish his name within the community of electronic dance music.
His newest EP on Mobilee’s little sister Leena Music is another intriguing chapter in Ross Evans’ story.  True to his signature style with roots in House while adding a Techno flair, melodic undertones, and just enough funk to keep it all tightly woven together, Ross Evans has delivered another solid release.

The title track “Caliente” starts the magnificent journey; its pounding kick drum is sure to make any club roar with excitement and energy but never loses its feel-good House music vibe.  Next on our journey, we reach a more melodic detour with “Part Of The Dream,” a little softer than the title track it takes us to an imaginary dream land with melancholic synth lines and soft whispers that lead us to  “Walk Of Shame” another melodic trip but this time less dreamy and more driving with a funky bassline that adds just enough attitude to keep us moving. After taking us this far on our adventure, our final stop is, “Asylum,” a safe haven where you can feel warm and secure. A place where we can decompress from our recent adventure through a land of excitement and diversity.
