The mysterious collective known as Man or Astro-Man? hail from the lowdown depths of Alabama, though their sound is hardly Southern, or American, or even terrestrial. Having released music throughout the ’90s and ’00s on garage punk stronghold Estrus Records as well as the legendary Touch and Go Records, they have wasted no time earning their places as mainstays in the American rock underground. Although they’ve released 10 full-lengths to date, chronicling quasar-hoppingquests and intergalactic misadventure in every direction, the centerpiece of their tenure will always be the band as they are on stage, frenetic, focused and swaddled in literal lightning from a homemade Tesla tower. Naturally, when the fine folks at Third Man Records began planning festivities for Record Store Day 2016, they could not help but indulge in the surf madness of Man or Astro Man? No doubt a signal of things to come—namely the first vinyl record played in space. The result is a retro-futurist surf riff bombast. The career-spanning set (which did include a Tesla tower and, ultimately, a charred drum set— yikes!) was a thermonuclear drag race and a welcome addition to a world-class live series.

Although there’s never a perfect substitute for being in the room when an artist owns the stage, Third Man Records continues to bottle the iridescent magic of the Blue Room with Man…Or Astro-Man? Live.

BURNING MAN MIX 2017

ADULT. have been stalwarts of national independent music for almost two decades, releasing their perfectionist hybrid of darkwave and synth-pop with respected labels Thrill Jockey, Kill Rock Stars, Ghostly International and, most recently, Mute. The soundscapes this Detroit duo sculpts by synthesizer stabs and sparse drum machine rhythm are icy, dense and precise.

This release showcases the group in rare form, complete with the totally unexpected and somewhat jarring sound of raucous audience laughter in place of typical applause as the intro as well as a light audible fuzz created by the third member of the group that night: the fog machine. Best of all, two of the tracks, “Misshaped” and “Does the Body Know?,” make their premiere on this release. ADULT. have outlasted any number of micro-electronic music scenes with whom they could have been grouped and, with their live show down to a science, prove that they will be worth a damn for a long time coming.

Ó (formerly Eskimeaux) is the recording project of songwriter and producer Gabrielle Smith. In it's earliest days, the project was markedly experimental, the work of an artist with a knack for ambience and a fascination with sound. The next wave of material, most of what landed on 2011's Two Mountains, didn't quite read as a solo project anymore and represented a shift toward traditional song structures, albeit still happily atmospheric, nature-centered musings on how to find one's place in the world.

Their live 7" features two intimate yet momentous songs, “Alone at the Party” and “Broken Necks", both from 2015’s O.K., the bedroom pop tour de force released on Double Double Whammy Records. “Broken Necks” is notably arresting as the first 40 seconds is a finger-picked invitation to the audience to join in singing the chorus, only to explode into full band ferocity with Smith’s saccharine, solid vocals uniting naturally with her backing band, Oliver Kalb (synthesizer), Felix Walworth (drums), and Jack Greenleaf (bass).

The latest from the world's greatest frontman, Ian Svenonius, is the excellent live document of Chain and the Gang! Having put out full-lengths with K Records, In the Red Records and Dischord Records, Third Man is proud to join the ranks of Chain disciples in presenting their first ever live recording.

This LP captures the raucous yet sagacious social commentary of Svenonius perfectly supplemented by the shaken soulful punk stylings of The Gang. This ain't 3am party dulled garage rock; this is sharp, socio-political and intelligent critique, as many DC artists have had a rich history of representing. This also must be Chain & the Gang’s decidedly lo-fi sound at its most clear.

A highlight is the final track “Come Over,” kicking off with floor tom detonation, adding chunky power pop guitars and barely-breathing vocals pushing to the point of disintegration with the very last note of the show.

The A-Moms/Algebra Mothers were formed by four like-minded misfits/artists/musicians/friends (Gerald Collins, Ralph Valdez, Diana Balton and Kirsten Rogoff) from Detroit’s Cass Tech High School. They made their professional debut in 1977, and in 1979 they released the weirdly incredible “Strawberry Cheesecake” b/w “Modern Noise” 7” on their own Aftertaste Records (TMR reissue imminent). They played around Detroit and the country with everyone from Destroy All Monsters and Sonic’s Rendezvous Band to Pere Ubu until 1984. Several decades later Third Man Records contacted “head Mothers” Gerald Collins (Jeecy and The Jungle) and Ralph Valdez (former WDET Disc Jockey) and discovered they were sitting on at least an LP’s worth of home studio demos and live recordings.

From that discovery, Third Man Records presents “A-Moms = Algebra Mothers” LP — 14 never before heard tracks recorded between 1977-1984 in various home studios and clubs. It will be their first release in nearly 40 years and only their second release ever.
