Crosstown Rebels present the third in a trio of EPs featuring reworks from Krust’s lauded masterpiece ‘The Edge Of Everything’. The selection of top-drawer artists delighted to rub shoulders with the revered master now adds UNKLE, Hodge and DJ Nature to a list that has seen Masters At Work, Four Tet, Damian Lazarus, Batu, Calibre, LCY and Flynn all deliver inspired re-rubs.

Linking back to a shared history that saw Krust (alongside Roni Size) remix DJ Krush’s ‘Dig This Vibe’, and also provide their own track ‘Tribetoon’ for the seminal ‘Headz 2’ compilation, both on James Lavelle’s label Mo’Wax, now the influential DJ/producer/A&R delivers arguably his best ever work under the UNKLE alias: This is deep breakbeat goodness which sounds both classic and perfectly now.

A sonic son of Krust, fellow Bristolian Hodge works ‘Constructive Ambiguity’ into a proggy new school breaks monster that carves the original’s metallic bass into sharp new shapes, whilst West Country royalty and Wild Bunch founder Milo Johnson AKA DJ Nature provides wigged-out Martian house by way of New York – which, in one of Krust’s many thematic circles – echoes the Latin-tinged, blunted science of Nu Yorican Soul’s classics ‘Mind Fluid’ and ‘The Nervous Track’.

Melodize label-boss Beartrax announces his ‘Valor EP’ this July, backed with remixes from Johannes Albert and Lauer.

Since its inception in 2019, Beartrax’s Melodize imprint has consistently pushed deeply musical house and techno, with contributions from John Tejada, Fort Romeau, Carl Finlow, and many more standing alongside Beartrax’s original productions throughout the label’s back catalogue.

Leading the sixth release, ‘Phantom Night’ sees haunted atmospherics nestled amongst ethereal synth licks, before a cinematic violin takes centre stage. Johannes Albert’s remix peppers elements of the original with slick acid lines and punchy drums, re-imagining the dramatic violin for a fresh and highly entertaining take.

On the flip, the uplifting ‘Valor’ runs through a series of modulating basslines, glistening pads, and sizzling drums, topped off with a majestic cello performance throughout. Rounding out the release, Lauer adds rubbery low end, floating keys, and hands-in-the-air piano stabs to ‘Valor’ for a high-energy end to another stellar EP from Melodize.

There were all sorts of shimmering shapes and colours floating atop the water as he watched perched upon a boat heading down stream. They moved softly on the rolling waves as they travelled through the old town - onlookers gazed out upon the spectacle, they say nestled amidst the reeds on the shore. For some of them it would be the first time that they had ever seen a parade or procession as grand and fantastic as this - the wild colours were electric and ethereal aboard the floating ships. It were as if they'd touched down from outer space. 

Because of Art is a producer who is receiving wide acclaim and support from some of the biggest and best dj's out there. With releases on the likes of Skream and Sasha's labels thus far, now he sets up shop on Anja Schneider's Sous Music with a track called 'Ethereal'.

London producer Third Son is not one for half measures, throwing all of his passion and skill into his music from day one. Since EPs on Accidental and 17 Steps, Third Son has released his debut and follow-up albums throughout successive coronavirus lockdowns and now joins Shall Not Fade for a six-tracker that pulls no punches.

Your Face As Art is British techno at the top of its game, right from the title track’s understated build up into a big-room climax. ‘Descartes Before The Horse’ keeps the momentum, a driving peaktime minimal workout with a spongiform bassline, carrying us through into the glistening soulfulness and ear-tickling sound design of ‘Don’t Be Self Conscious’. Cocteau Twins style dreamy vocals meet the dancefloor in ‘Don’t Go Quietly’, while ‘Lesson in Stoicism’ is a syncopated percussive beat down. ‘Pygmalion Effect’ closes out the EP, a piece of ritualistic body music awash with glassy synth stabs.

After years of thumpers and bumpers on labels such as Twirl, Love Child and Instant Replay, the erstwhile Go-Go dancer and Amsterdam club legend Lupe sashays in from the left and slam dunks us with unholy acid house thunderstorms. 'Only Sinners Survive'

His Pets debut is pounding late night tackle that sounds future-proof today but would have fit perfectly at any stage since the acid revolution. The title track is inspired, as is the whole EP, by magical TV drama consumed during lockdown; takes us straight across the leftfield with an electroclash style fusion of juggernaut acid and stark lyricism that reminds us that perfection is a delusion.

Deeper into the night we strut to strike deep mix gold on 'Den Of Iniquity' as a Lupe makes the drums sing in a slamming, Q&A style hook that will fit over any other track and wind the dancers up with its addictive and mischievous mutations. Finally we have 'Binge Dancer'. The biggest slammer of the EP, once again we're sent into a spin with broadsheet acid and the type of rattling, insistent percussion that ensures plenty of bingeing.

Handle with caution. Lupe might drive you loopy.
