Fresh names to Visionquest, but certainly not new to the game; More Than Material is the promising new project between two bonafide French selector statesmen who collectively boast decades of dancefloor and studio science: Jedsa Soundorom and Gauthier DM. Launching their new alias earlier this year on Zingiber Audio, their signature has been tangible from the off; deep weighted grooves, warm dynamics and total immersion.

'Intimate' says it all; realising its title's close connotations with a dubby, physical groove and a rollcall of soul rolling elements, it's the sound of a crowd locking in en- mass. Low ceiling, heads down, lights low. 'Godsa' follows with similar moody momentum and another hypnotic weave. This time over much more of a stately techno noir soundscape as its persistent jack is laced with subtle acid details. Next, we hit 'Doctor High', an ageless deep house groove peppered with nuances of uplift, trippiness and a drum arrangement that taps deep into the foundations. Once again, the track relives its title's implications.

Finally, we sign out with a precision revision from Fuse resident Archie Hamilton who refixes the pace and density of 'Doctor High' with more of a driving peaktime aesthetic that remains fully respectful of the original's weight and clarity. More Than Material by nature, spirit and name.

This And That Lab is run by Davide Squillace who along with featuring on his own label, has also provided tracks and remixes for some of the most respected labels in electronic music such as Crosstown Rebels, Hot Creations, Bedrock, Moon Harbour and Minus.

Not only is Davide Squillace in constant high demand as a producer, he also travels the world to headline festivals and events. He also holds a prestigious residency as Ibiza’s iconic CircoLoco parties held at DC10.

Basti Grub is a regular feature of This and That Lab having featured on many of the labels previous releases along with other noteworthy imprints including SCI+TEC, Stil Vor Talent, Mobilee, Bar 25 Music and Desolat.

This is the first time Basti Grub and Davide Squillace have ever collaborated together, but both have previously worked with many other artists including the likes of Guti, Timo Maas, Eric Volta, Butch and Matthias Tanzmann. The tracks on this EP also feature the vocals of Julian Smith.

“Play Thing” opens the EP with a sleazy vocal intermingled with the melodic groove of a pulsating synth line. Building momentum, the introduction of epic chords creates a contrast of brooding atmosphere and uplifting melody. Tribal style percussion adds to the uniqueness of this eccentric cut of dance floor focused house music.

“Let's Go Deep” brings the funk with its bassline and cheeky melody sound. Hypnotic with just the right amount of grit, there is an exquisite blend of percussive textures at play, but it’s the vocal which really gives the track its personality. Quirky and brimming with personality, it’s got a seductive style that brings intimacy to a peak time style that blurs the line between a mixture of sub genres.

Basaec is the label founded by Cadenza chief Luciano as an output for the music of its roots, coming from the Chilean prosperous archives or from brand new productions.
The fourth episode of the series features two extended fleshy cuts of thick dance floor nourishment. “Nature Reverance” is a grandiloquent obscure hypnotic journey to the center of the Earth, permeated of bass frequencies and jazzy drums, exalted by a slithering capturing Leslied organ.
Less inward-looking but still thousands leagues under the sea, “Trance Ilvana” has a shuffled prancing rhythm over an ultra funky stripped down bass line; its swooshes’ and its drops of juicy synthetic quirks sticks smoothly with its driving bass drum.
A generous condensation of timeless electronic funk, and a kaleidoscope of Lucien Nicolet early allure, hard coded in his DNA.

Davide is not available for comment. He’s got to catch a flight; he’s rushing to the studio; the stage manager is frantically hurrying him into the booth; he’s meeting to discuss plans for his labels…or any of the other myriad reasons why Davide feels like he hasn’t slept, eaten or stopped running for what seems like his whole life.

Born in Siena, raised in Naples, it took a trip to London for Davide to finally discover electronic music. Wooed by the mood and sound of the British scene, he returned to Naples flush with energy, excitement and a knowing that this new calling would consume him. 

Davide immersed himself in this world in every conceivable way. In 1999 he began studying at the Naples’ school of sound engineering, tinkering with his first productions, promoting techno events, and finally performing. His first releases on Primate Records, Design Music andConform were a cadence of his arrival and showcased the young artist’s steadfast style.

Having honed his craft at home, in 2004 Davide left Naples for Barcelona unwavering in his resolve. Now, while touring around the continent, he began to release in earnest what would become a massive body of work, and at a dizzying pace. His productions have graced the catalogs of some of the finest labels including Ovum, Sci+Tec, Morris Audio, Resopal Schallware, Supernature, CMYK, Adagio, Viva, Nervous, Saved, Shake, Rillis; the list goes on… 

Added to that, you have to take into account the labels which Davide founded and still curatestoday – Sketch, Minisketch, Vir, 500, Titbit and Hideout. 2012 sees the start of Davide’s latest innovative project. This and That Lab will be a unique fusion of label and think tank combining music, art and culture used as a platform for Davide and other like minded artists to develop creative projects in music, visual art, design, fashion and writing.

In addition to his genre-defining works, Davide continues to inspire and ignite dancefloors worldwide. Whether it be at Circoloco, where he has been a resident since 2007, Womb, Berghain, D.Edge, or any other marquee venue, Davide plays with an unequalled funk and excitement. His signature sets, revered by the masses and peers alike, do a double duty in guarding our much-loved traditions while constantly pushing them forward.

The realm of possibilities for one of electronic music’s leading lights is endless. Unfortunately, the minutes in the day are not. Davide’s answer is simple – do what you love and make no compromises.
