Alec Clegg was Chief Education Officer for the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1945 to 1974. He believed in a liberal arts based education for all and held that such an approach stimulated better outcomes generally. Anyone going to a West Riding school would be encouraged to paint, draw, dance, sing, or learn a foreign language simply because it was the right thing to do. 

No-one today has ever heard of him. 

No child today escapes the grim “if-you-fail-maths-you-will-die” austerity of national curricula, academy chains and ofsted inspectors with bad hair and no dress sense.

This tune, whose first line is taken from an Ian McMillan article about Clegg, is a nostalgic howl for something better for our children.

Some exciting news from the Cafe Le Wooltone.
Today I release a song from my upcoming solo album ‘Blues, Beats and Brel' - it’s called ‘She's A Mean’ and features a live stripped back acoustic performance with merely a hint of piano (and handclaps). And production by Fran Ashcroft. 
The album splits into three styles (hence the title) based on a 'diet of old blues records, beat poetry and Jacques Brel accordion sandwiches'.
De toute facon this one fits more into the ‘Blues' scheme of things.

I Want You To Know Who I Was

I think of some of the "old timers" that have influenced my life especially when I was a younger man, the stories they shared, the wisdom in those stories if I listened closely, and most sobering, that I'm an old timer myself now.  This song is a bit of a musical portrait of encountering an old timer at a small-town diner and enjoying a bit of food and conversation.  Joining me in this visit is ace pianist and valued collaborator Debra Buesking.  As always, her playing enriches and informs my playing and is totally sympathetic to the theme. On a personal note, I appreciate all of you that reached out to me upon hearing about the devastating flood in central Texas that swept away many lives and much property.  It was a worst case scenario happening on one of the busiest weekends of the year.  Amarillo stayed high and dry during the event, but all of us were touched, as was the whole world, upon hearing of the tragedy.  Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
