Growing up in Brooklyn, California was just an idea, a feeling. 
This whole other world, sunny and dreamy. Probly some of that was because of Brian Wilson. Those harmonies sound like sunshine. Or like the idea of sunshine.


When I got older and I finally went out there for the first time, the sun was different. It was so beautiful. The air had this slow, heavy shimmer.
But there was something else, too—a strange current running underneath it all. Something tense, off-kilter, and surreal. The ground didn’t feel solid, like there was always about to be an earthquake.It was weird. And I loved it.

That's what this music feels like to me - unreal and too real at the same time.This was surf music made by guys who didn’t really surf.
Brothers singing like Angels from another planet.
Escapist and haunting. 
Bits of folk and doo-wop, calypso rhythms, teenage heartbreak: fragments of American dream (nightmare). It also didn't sound like anything else being made at the time. The world outside was burning, and they built a fantasy world, a place to hide themselves and something darker.

The outtakes, the false starts, the studio talk, the demos—they are as important as the songs, cuz they let us into the room, which is just unreal, really. And when you listen back, you can tell that it starts and ends with Brian. Everyone is there to work and everyone can play, but it's his show. His dream. I'm so glad he let us in.

Exploring adult and deeply psychological themes in his works, Satoshi Kon used the limitless expanse of animation to bend reality to his will. Through the lens of vivid dreams and nightmares, Kon tackled very real themes of alienation, love and loss. He sadly passed away in 2010, aged only 46, but his cinematography and playful direction has influenced a generation of cult filmakers like Darren Aronofsky and Christopher Nolan.

Florence Scott-Anderton collates an hour of soundtrack moments and audio excerpts from Kon's small but intensely imaginative oeuvre.
