Don’t lose sight of the reason we are all creating in the music scene. When you prioritize community, it will go a long way in creating sustainable and safe spaces for every walk of life to enjoy. Events are remembered by the joy you bring to people, not the money you walk away with.

Van Black Library’s proposal is just what you’d imagine - a Library ran by Black organizers, dedicated for Black and BIPOC community members. This is a space to not only sign out books for free, this is intended to be used as a study space, a chill space, and a safe space. It is to cater to the needs of the Black community first and foremost. The hope is that one day, this not-for-profit initiative can be a springboard for other services like group therapy, community care efforts in the realm of fundraising, childcare, art exhibitions, poetry readings, bookclubs, zine making etc. Ultimately, in addition to connecting people to information, libraries connect people to people.

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: Play the music that lifts you up and it's going to lift up other people. Have a personal hype song or 2. i.e. If I get anxious for some reason before or mid-set, I'll often whip out Chaka Khan's "I Feel For You" to lift me out of that weird place of self doubt. Self doubt is the enemy.

Taking up the controller for the next in our SMUT mix series is the incredibly talented Kuscheln. The moniker of Matt Mockford, Kuscheln is the second Canadian to appear on our series and is a multi-talented producer (check out his track ‘Speed Bump’ as featured on Kaptcha’s compilation Xenolith 1.0 release) and DJ who runs Klub Ferret, a Toronto based queer party.  He has made his name playing places such as Phile, Por Detroit and Bossa Nova Civic Club and recently played at Promise Cherry Beach and has even appeared on our friends Ema’s show for Dublin Digital Radio. Matt’s extensive range of influences is reflected in this mix.  Here fusing UK techno, bass and breakbeat with some edits added in for good measure (particularly the iconic Donna Lewis closing), we couldn’t be more delighted to share this ethereal hypnotic mix with you. What sound would you listen to… if it was the only thing you could listen to 24/7?

A binaural recording of a tiger purring, taken from inside their mouth while they were sleeping.

Describe in detail your favorite place to sit & listen to music.

It’s not a specific place, but I like a sturdy wooden bench in a park-like area, early afternoon, overcast, cool but not cold, shabby, lush grass, beautiful old trees, and lots of people bustling about.

When you are in the crowd… where do you like to stand and why?

Wherever the central most a/c vent downdrafts, to balance getting a nice solid stereo image & not overheating.

Sure, a bit on the nose, but it means my tears won’t be totally sorrowful.

Favorite BPM and why?

As a dancer, the 140<->70 BPM two-speeds-at-once zone because I like options for my energy expenditure.

As a DJ, 135 BPM feels pretty nice right now, not exactly sure why though.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

I’m a broken record on this, but more universal connection/activation/support off the dance floor.
