This is what I call hyper melodic. The composition is part wise very happy and well fluffy but the sound itself is so thin. Some EQ boosting and additional compressing would do to the module a lot. But anyway, still a good one.

Great vocals (sung by Gilli himself and then timestretched if I remember correctly, which would unbelievebly cool!), memorable melodies and tracker-wise there is a lot to discover. This song is far from boring. Some minor weaknesses: the end comes as a surprise because the impression is given that there will be another chorus; the last few patterns are more a bridge than an outro. Second: sometimes the song is more demo or chiptune than gaytrance. Still, great song!

Help, my CPU's burning! What the heck, it's worth this entry. If you have more than 2Ghz, you might even be able to check out those great tricks ptrance used for her composition...nah, she was so cute and added also a low-CPU-version to the package. :) Maybe it's not as gay as you'd expect it but I love this feeling! ;)

This is beyond gay trance, in a positive way. What can I say, musically this song tops all entries so far. But I would actually enjoy putting a CD from ptrance in my hifi, as opposed to all that gay trance from nowadays. So really, this song is not allowed to win this contest, but I will still give it a high grade. There are some things that can be improved, but that is all beside the point: I like this song!

I was laughing my ass off the first time Ive heard it :D. The vocals are funny and very well produced. Thugh, overall the song could need some more work. Itself it feels a little empty and I miss some details here and there. Also Im not sure if this tune fits into the category Gaytrance (Except the first part). Id rather call it gaydance :)

Eyspire just rocked the listeners with that one. Absolutely funny lyrics and some good skills. Unfortunately the chords are streamed to a long sample, so you can't learn the notes. But hey, it about to be gay. And that's what this song is the most :)

Bonus points for being the first entry. Special Girl has hilarious vocals, freaky candy melodies and all sorts of crazyness. A fantastic piece of parody of dance, but it's not exactly gay trance. Fun nonetheless!

What was this competition?

Back in 2004/2005, the Trance is Gay Competition was a fun project for the biggest part, where all participants had to do their best trying to produce the gayest song ever. All contributions were created and distributed in the .rns module file format, so that anyone using Renoise can access them to view, play, edit and learn from it.

This competition was a spin-off from a more than two year old discussion thread about how to get that professional level 'phat' trance sound. This thread had managed to surface from the depths of the forum as if no time had passed since the last post and as if that alone wasn't hilarious enough, its subject couldn't have had a better timing.

If you are familiar with internet cult and hypes, you could know that during a forum's life comes a time that one or a few people start using the word gay where others normally use to call things cheesy, stupid and generally anything not cool. After a good bit of protesting either the forum calms down, or the use of the word contaminates the regular visitors, which indeed happened in this case.

It didn't take long before melodic trance was mentioned, and being all hyped up some finally dared to come out of the closet and revealed their past 'experience' with this style, which is certainly not the manliest around. The most prominent person when it comes to great ("plans to do something silly") bad ideas was ptrance, who had earlier managed to turn a lame thread into a succesful project, once again came up with a wicked concept: to "compose the gayest melodic trance melody on earth!". The next step was opening a new topic and changing the objective into creating the cutest, fluffiest, tuffiest and most gayish full length trance module.



What is gay trance?

Gay trance is not an official subgenre, nor are there any exact specifications. In fact, everyone has his interpretation. There are some characteristics that a song in this genre may contain, but not necesserily.
                 
Here is a list of characteristics I personally see fit in gay trance.
                 
Supersaw lead melodies, lots of chorus and reverb. A soft kick and a slow, drifting tempo. Not too funky, keep it rather dreamy. The intro fades in, we get a rhythm with a variation on the main theme, after which we get a drop. The song then builds up for about three minutes like in epic trance, followed by a very moderate climax. The rest of the song can either be resumed with alternating dreamy themes with very cheesy ones.
Not having too uncommon or complex chords. The mood progresses from overly dramatic to irrationally exhuberant.
Smooth, sparkling bubbly sounds instead of harsh stabs and aggressive arps.
Cheesiness!
