With our first edition of May, we’ve had a fifty, fifty split between ambient & experiment and the more uptempo melodic sounds arrived on our desk this month, we were going to make this podcast in two halves, but decided to mix the two together giving you light and shade variations over the three hours.

On the list we have the latest releases from Ian Boddy & Markus Reuter, Vanderson, Syndromeda, Robert Rich & Markus Reuter, Baltes & Erbe and Romerium, with one track from Lomita, Jaja, Mindphaser, C J Rogers and David Parsons last album Puja, which we managed to get hold of, Mick’s a great fan of his music.
Some names not familiar to us here,  include Arovane & Porya Hatami, Carlo Celuque, Natural Life Essence & Threadbare, with a mixture of Berlin School, dark & experimental ambient excursions to Chill-out sound.
With the release of Steve Jolliffe’s new autobiography, including a copy of Cyclone, plus a short unreleased track from Tangerine Dream from 1967, Steve’s brief association with the group in Berlin, with just Edgar Froese & Klaus Schulze, we’ve included the track Bent Side Coldwalk from that album, Steve was a major influence on that release, the first one with vocals which split the fans somewhat and rumours had it Edgar hated it.

Espen Kraft made a great video about the AKAI S612 Sampler (https://youtu.be/01u2alyA08Y) and with it, a really nice, poppy tune that I simply couldn't resist the urge to turn into a full song. He graciously let me have a go at it, and liked the results. I got the stem mixes and vocal tracks, and basically went to town with it, giving it the full treatment I tend to go for. Trying to keep the liveliness and happy bouncing basslines, the steeldrums and cheerful brass lines. I added the intro, some bridges and turned the intro hook into a chorus since it was the main thing that caught my attention the first time. I also took Espen's vocal lines from his original chorus and harmonised them and did a little Porter Robinson thing at the intro and break down towards the end.

This is a little track I made one evening (and night... took about six hours total since I had to get it done before the morning) at the hotel while attending Thomann's Synth Reactor 2019 in Germany. Wondered what I could create with just this miniature FM recreation.

I used the Reface DX to lay down the sounds part by part, and section by section, since this synth has only one part. I had to use sample packs for drums (Zenhiser 80s Retro Drummer) and I allowed myself a couple of ReFX Nexus2 parts to fill in and add sprinkle here and there. The rest is all DX, some heavily processed, others straight through. A few parts were glazed in Valhalla reverb to get the thickness of it all.

Thank you to Yamaha for letting me hog this little baby for so many days. ;)

Reface My DX

This is the main song I made during my stay at Thomann's Synth Reactor 2019 in Germany. The question was if it's possible to make some good retro 80s synth music with budget synths (around $500), and it most definitely can.

I set up a little miniature version of my studio with a Yamaha Reface DX, a Yamaha MS61, a Roland Juno DS, Roland SE-02 and a Behringer DeepMind 6. Combined with my MacBook Pro with MOTU Digital Performer, Microbook IIc and MicroLite MIDI interfaces as well as a Thomann T-Mix DM-20 Digital Mixer (also around $500) and some sample packs from my collection. All melodic parts are played by these synths, the drums are slightly from the MX61 (percussion and hi hats) while the drums are Zenhiser 80s Retro Drummer because there are virtually no good retro kits to be found these days. It's all modern stuff apparently.
