I believe this is the part where I am supposed to spout off some pretentious, self-serving bullshit about how I've been making music since I was 18 months old or whatever, and how my music is a "reflection" of something-or-another, or a "throwback" to who-knows-what, or some other load of horseshit meant to give you the in all likelihood erroneous impression that my stuff most assuredly does NOT sound pretty much exactly like everything else, and that this hour of tracks ripped from the Beatport Top 100 is completely different from every other hour of tracks ripped from the Beatport Top 100. The terms "consumate" and "the DJ's DJ" need to be in there somewhere [check!], along with some bullshit about "taking you on a journey". If I want to sound like an even bigger twat, I'll refer to you as "the listener". God, we're almost as bad as gallery artists and wine makers. 

Look. I'm a DJ. "My music" is other people's shit I found on the Internet. I found an hour's worth of stuff I found that I like, and more importantly, roughly the same BPM, (give or take 12%), and I dicked around with them on Serato long enough to put them together in a way that makes it sound like I halfway know what I'm doing. That's it. For fuck's sake, we don't even have to dig through crates of records anymore. As for a journey, unless you're in a car, chances are you'll be in pretty much the same place at the end of one of my mixtapes as you were at the beginning, unless you happen to be rolling balls at the time, in which case, ahem? How 'bout a little sump-sump for tha DJ, yo?

Anyway, I genuinely have been referred to on occasion as "the DJ's DJ", but I'm pretty sure it is just their nice way of saying I play a bunch of shit nobody likes but me. I'm sure it's worded a bit differently when I'm not around. Guilty as charged, I suppose. Sue me. I find the concept of genres constricting. So I may throw an electro set up one month, a deep house one up the next, and an indie one up after that. I may even go alt-rock or 80s darkwave if the mood strikes me. I'd leave them all up to showcase my range or whatever, but I'm too cheap to pay for whatever membership I need to get these cocksmokes on Soundcloud to let me have more than one mixtape up at a time.

Thing is, I get bored hearing the same shit all night, and so I try to always do something different than whatever has been going on up until that point. I'm that guy who will play house at a breaks party, trap at a house party, whatever. Call me a narcissist, but I want my set to stand out. I don't want to be just another hour of trance at a trance party. If I'm gonna play nothing but trance for an hour, first of all, shoot me, but if it ever were to happen, it would be at a DnB show.  I have been to far too many shows, even some featuring well-known acts, where I never realized the DJ had changed. You may not like what I play, but you'll know when I start playing. And if you don't like it, I promise; it'll be something completely different next time. Maybe it's just me - and it looks more and more like it is - but I find the idea of hearing nothing but house, breaks, dubstep, whatever, for 6-8 hours or more the epitome of tedious. There's way too much music out there for everyone to be pulling from the same well. It's the musical equivalent of inbreeding, with similar results. But the DJ crew mentality that rules the roost around here reinforces the idea that you are supposed to pick a direction and stick with it. You see it both in individual DJs and in shows, this one-genre mentality. I've even been to two-room shows that had the same genre blaring in both rooms. I thought the purpose of two rooms was to give the party more variety, not to give the promoter more slots to pass out to his/her friends. Apparently, I was wrong about that.

And yet strangely enough, I don't seem to get that many party invites. I just cannot figure out why...
