What Jazz Avoid is music label based on Hokkaido Japan.

Kyo Yanagi as known as SANMI is the founder of the label and also Japanoid musician, activated in music since 1996. He had music career in several bands as Pops, Avant-garde, Experimental and Authentic Jazz at Tokyo. After that he worked with algorithmic composition as a mean to sculpt IDM tracks, using MaxMSP, MaxForLive and Ableton, and has released countless music in a European, Amercian, Russian and Japanese of music labels. Besides, regularly collaborates with the artist V4W.Enko (aka Evganiy Vaschenko), from the Kvitnu (Ukraine) label artist. And recently engaged in free style improvised acoustic music. And also worked with several movie productions, rap artists as track maker and contemporary dancers as multi-instrument player. Also the researcher of Duke Ellington and Blliy Strayhorn compositions as life work.

北海道白老在住の音響芸術家。都市環境並びに自然との霊的な交感をテーマとした作曲やパフォーマンスが特徴。国内だけでなく、リトアニア、ウクライナ、香港などの海外公演も行う。DJセットを含む８０タイトルを超える作品群をリリースしており、多作な電子音楽家・実験音楽家・即興演奏家として実績がある。近年、岡本太郎ドキュメンタリー映画『太陽の塔』のサウンドトラックの制作に携わるなど、映画音楽も作成している。ウクライナの全方位型アーティストであり、max/msp専門家のV4W.ENKOとのコラボレーションプロジェクトY:E:T名義としても活動。多楽器奏者として、集団アコースティック即興演奏・舞踏集団とのコラボレーション・ワークショップを主宰。NYジャズの鬼才ドンチェリーとの共演で知られるパーカッション奏者の木村正人氏と共同制作を行なっている。またトラックメーカーとしてラップアーティストやダンサーに楽曲提供をしている。ライフワークとして、デューク・エリントン及びビリー・ストレイホーンの楽曲研究に日々勤しんでいる。

It's difficult to categorize my music into just one genre. It draws influence from trip hop, breakbeat, instrumental and abstract hip hop, heavy rock, techno, minimal, sound art, contemporary, glitch, and more!

I admire many artists, and you might detect their influence in my work. Among the best are Daft Punk and Massive Attack, followed by 90s Ninja Tune artists like Amon Tobin, DJ Vadim, The Herbaliser, and Kid Koala. I've had the pleasure of seeing many of them live at the legendary Ilosaari Rock festivals. I also appreciate French hip hop, particularly Le Peuple de l'herbe. Other inspirations include The Prodigy, Portishead, DJ Krush, DJ Shadow, Gorillaz, Moby, Mono, Thievery Corporation, Future Sound of London, and more. My taste spans from acid jazz and funk to lo-fi and even punk or hard metal, depending on my mood.

I've been making music since the early 2000s, starting with MadTracker software (I am fine with the program name). A few years ago, I transitioned to music production with Ableton Live 10, and I'm currently using version 12. Some of my tracks are experimental, stemming from explorations over the past 20 years, while others are entirely new compositions. This experimentation is perhaps influenced by my background in research—I'm eager to explore new territories, including music.

Nature is my second passion. I tend to a micro-farm in the summer, raising sheep and chickens and restoring it to its traditional biohabitat. In the winter, I evade to the city and brood there, craving for the countryside's spring, summer, and autumn... or dreaming being in hot and sunny place by a sea or river...

I'm open to collaborations, akin to scientific endeavors where novel and exciting outcomes emerge from teamwork. Feel free to reach out!
