The third section of “Tome of Stars“ is “Sporogenesis“ , a haphazard chronicle of the years 2011–2020.  It marks a shift from the cataclysm of “Senescence“  into a period of withdrawal and emotional hibernation, its eleven sonnets seeking to reflect the padam of the collection’s bharatanatyam-inspired structure. 

This sonnet serves as the emotional and narrative climax of the Item "Sporogenesis", capturing the poet’s devastating realization that his sustained efforts to reach his beloved not only failed but elicited a final, caustic rejection. The tone is one of devastation and bewilderment, merging liturgical metaphor, anatomical imagery, and emotional vulnerability. The poet recounts his acts of reaching out (his letter, his sustained correspondence, his offerings) as both devotional and doomed. The poem moves with increasing momentum toward the terminal couplet, where a brutal reply ends all hope.

“Letter, December 8th, 2020” is the final poem of Sporogenesis, the third major section of “Tome of Stars”, a poem that basically unmakes the entire section, destroying the germinating spore. As the closing sonnet of this arc, it functions as a decisive rupture. Throughout “Sporogenesis”, the poet has explored dormancy, grief, and cautious re-emergence, first emotionally through introspection, and then literally through outreach. This sonnet violently terminates that trajectory. All that germinated from the long silence—vulnerability, confession, and hope—is figuratively crushed in the poem’s final image. This break paves the way for the next section of the collection, which must necessarily reckon with this defeat and its consequences. Thematically, the sonnet links back to earlier poems that imagined divine or mythic reconciliation; here, the goddess returns not with forgiveness, but with damnation.

Timothy Shortell is a composer based in Los Angeles. He has scored an assortment of films, video games, series, trailers, and other media. In addition to scoring, he has composed hundreds of tracks for publishing companies and labels. His music has been placed in thousands of TV spots, trailers, commercials, and TV coverage for Hulu, Paramount+, Prime Video, Riot Games, BBC, ESPN, ABC, NBC, CNN, FOX, CBS, Discovery, and various international networks. 

In 2022, he became the youngest composer to ever write custom music for a theatrical movie trailer at the age of 19. He received the Thomas Bergersen Grant for Young Talent from the co-founder of Two Steps From Hell and was three times awarded Occidental College’s Elinor Remick Warren Award for Significant Achievement in Musical Composition.
