HTRK – Body Lotion

Body Lotion is a collaboration between Belgium's Sleeperhold Publications, Australian duo HTRK and London-based artist David Ferrando Giraut. The three tracks on the record—"Sugar," "Punch" and the title track, "Body Lotion"—date back to the sessions that led to the band's 2011 album, Work (Work Work). For any HTRK fan, the opportunity to hear three unheard Work (Work Work)-era tracks is reason for both celebration and reflection. Two of the songs feature the unmistakable basslines of Sean Stewart, who died in 2010, before Work (Work Work) was released. 

Both "Sugar" and "Punch" were recorded live in HTRK's London rehearsal room, the then trio of Jonnine Standish, Nigel Lee-Yang and Sean Stewart. On "Sugar," Jonnine's voice smolders through smeared drums and Sean's bassline. "Punch" is spare and confessionary; "Body Lotion" is suggestive, winking and bruised, a trademark HTRK hook submerged beneath the murk. All three tracks mutated from the recording sessions that ultimately led to Work (Work Work) track "Slo Glo." While they all stand as striking individual songs, they share subtle elements in common—a lyrical idea here, some guitar parts there. 

David Ferrando Giraut's distinctive artwork adorns Body Lotion's sleeve and one side of the wax. (All three tracks feature on the record's A-side.) The Spanish artist has a deep and intimate connection to HTRK—he was living with Nigel in London at a time when Sean would visit to sketch out songs in Nigel's tiny room. They've collaborated before, too: Jonnine has narrated and appeared in some of his films, while Nigel has provided the music. Giraut's previous installations have often carried a musical lean—he's used LP covers and turntables in the past—and he's found a rich stream of creative inspiration in music's ability to create meaning and change in memory and behaviour.

This year has seen HTRK return with Psychic 9-5 Club, a bold and triumphant album, one that marked the beginning of a new era for Nigel and Jonnine. Body Lotion presents a beautiful, bittersweet glimpse into the recent past. 

About Sleeperhold Publications:

Sleeperhold is a Belgian-based publication platform. It's aim: to produce ten outputs, spanning different realms of the arts, and then cease to exist. Its current project is a run of ten vinyl records—HTRK's 12-inch follow previous efforts from Tropic Of Cancer, Moon Duo and Disappears. Before the vinyl series, Sleeperhold put out a photobook, a poster set, a deck of cards and short stories. They say: "There is no recurring theme, there is no recurring format, there is no recurring audience."

“TOO FAR” merges gritty beats, shimmering guitars, and ethereal vocals, to create a sound that blurs the lines between analog and digital production, while paying tribute to the genres of Trip-Hop, Goth, Dance, and Electro. The track combines an underlying feeling of nostalgia, referencing 80’s synth and guitar sounds, whilst pushing forward through the boundaries of current popular music.

‘Projects’ is the lead single and first taste from the highly anticipated debut release from Melbourne duo Time For Dreams, who are Tom Carlyon ( Standish Carlyon, Devastations)  and Amanda Roff (Harmony, backing vocalist for The Drones and Moon Rituals). Their debut album 'In Time' is due for release in early 2017.

Time For Dreams are celebrating the release of the 'Projects' with a free show this coming Monday (28/11/16) at Monday Night Mass at The Northcote Social Club. Joined by Premium Fantasy, AVOID and Pregnancy.

Time For Dreams - Projects (Single)

Performed and recorded live at Laser Highway @ Forgotten Worlds Melbourne 17 December 2016. Comments, questions, shares, likes are more than welcome. I live to push the sound, and the more people out there listening, grooving and loving the better!

This is the opening set of the last Laser Highway event at Forgotten Worlds, our home venue for the last two years. The night was set up to showcase the talents of the awesome Aussie imprint, Future Retro Music and launch Future Fate's incredible Fat Synthesizer LP (https://futureretromusic.bandcamp.com/album/fat-synthesizer). Live performances were by Amiga chiptune legend cTrix and a special synth/space/prog/guitar set from Pselodux. Other DJ support was provided by WARD-IZ and Future Fate. 

This mix is almost like the perfect starter kit if you want to open a retrowave show anywhere in the world, hints of darkness here and there but just a solid driving beat without elevating any heart rates. I'm incredibly happy with the beatmatching/mixing here, barely any mistakes. Hurrah! You might also notice I barely use any FX unit fuckery here because I was using an SPD-SX sampling pad. I know it can seem a little jarring on other mixes listening to it on Soundcloud, but they work really well in a real world venue environment with a little DJ trolling (beat smashing/repeating, reverb, delay, hi/lo filtering etc.). Plus, acoustics make such a difference - the event DJ mixes are just recordings, there's no way to isolate them out for home listening. I was using my SPD-SX drum pad adding rolls and fills throughout the tracks, which weren't recorded as they were on a different channel on the house mixer. Maybe next time I bring it out. Anyway, enjoy!
