Exclusive: Mayflo - Bmore Gurl

Paris label for exquisite music, Community Center, readies the next EP on the label, which comes from ever busy artist Mayflo. Latter is highly known due to his radio presence with residencies at RinseFM, Le Mellotron or Station Station. Behind the decks he's not only made a name under his Mayflo artist moniker but also as part of Les Déménageurs Bresson, or with his collective ItinéraireBis. His five tracker Solar Club Continuum on Community Center, a blissful affair, combines several (positive) musical influneces on one EP: there's a warm House-note, some Bristol Breaks and a touch of Baltimore Club-vibes that the artist smoothly and skilfully blends to come up with a diverse yet sophisticated EP that does not neglect the fun factor. The A2, Bmore Gurl, pays tribute to R&B music in the same way as it does to the beforementioned Bristol Breaks. The U Remind Me vocals (from Usher's 2001 hit) are sharply implemented and repeated throughout the track taking you either back to these days or let's you discover them in a new habit. Whatever applies to you, Bmore Gurl is one of those tracks that just puts a smile on your face and Mayflo managed to use the vocal and blend it with deep chords and a break-esque bass line in a way that it is a meaningful take for today's dancefloors. 

Mayflo's EP Solar Club Continuum will be released on Community Center on October 22nd, 2021.

Dubbed out flows and sweet R&B melodies get a pumping rework with 303 bass and deep pads, hinting at a sound that is to become his future trademark style.

"There are many a great duos that the contemporary world has been presented with. Think Beyonce and Jay Z, Bert and Ernie, Daft Punk, Sweet Female Attitude and Sunship, just to name a few. Today, Gallery Records are presenting another, powerhouse, bass and club driven duo, AK SPORTS and Mincy, two local underground legends and community leaders, combining for ‘Rave Again’ an EP to challenge any soundsystem. The duo each present an original and a corresponding remix, resulting in four percussive and bass driven numbers.

Hosting the A-side is Eora/Sydney born and bred, London and LA based, Balamii radio host, DJ, producer and high energy aficionado AK SPORTS. She delivers the chonky, ‘Flex’, ready to slide directly into her globally renowned DJ sets that feature hard hitting breaks, nostalgic warehouse cuts and the darker tinges of UK inspired garage. ‘Flex’ nods to the traditional tropes of these genres glued together by a tongue-in-cheek donk bassline which sits delicately below euphoric synths and a choppy, sporadic vocal sample. It’s alternative version sees Mincy transform the track's ebb and flow to a consistent, in your face four to the floor romper, representing it as a techno-esque sweat dripping affair. 

Just as remix’s outro provides a breath of fresh air for the listener, slams Mincy’s original, ‘Biscuit Inception’ a manifestation of her vast experience as a dance music community member. It includes being label executive of Extra Spicy, she’s shared the stage with the likes of DJ EZ, Flava D, Preditah, Conductah. Rarely does instrumental music require a parental guidance logo, but ‘Biscuit Inception’s’ booming bass line, eerie vocal sample and 90s inspired breaks are not for the faint hearted. If late night warehouse parties have taught us anything, it's that there's always room for more euphoria and AK SPORTS’ FJAAK-esque remix exemplifies this perfectly. Time travel is technically impossible, but the remix’s glitzy piano chords, shaky distorted percussion and an impressive omnipresent kick will vividly teleport the listener back to the 90s. 

While the collaborative EP makes sense sonically the duo’s intrinsic connection to community action makes the record even sweeter. Both artists are vast community leaders and advocates of a new era of dance music, one deservedly reclaimed by female identifying artists and communities. Their unapologetic nature in uplifting, representing and solidifying their respective communities are well on show here, packaged as four tracks ready to take over and demand attention in any club environment.

Following Mercia’s first official release and remix of I Still want in 2021, the Coventry based artist offers a full EP which consists of 5 pieces which explore and reflect his home town within the setting of breakbeat and UK bass. 6am starts off the exploration with ethereal atmospheres and lush piano before exploding into a full bodied breaks journey. 95 Bones’ remix follows this with a club ready acetate driven flip of the original which continues the story. The title track City Of Villains and Kiddah remix adds further spark to the package with a searing sub bass which is riddled with deep energy a syncopated reese bassline sharp breaks and shining accents before the EP is rounded off by the bubbling and energetic Hill Cross Flyover which closes out this journey channeling how we've all been feeling this past year waiting for the return of the dance; it carries Strictly Rhythm influence and a prescient vocal motif.

2000's Masters EP (Snippets)

"Compliments is a non-binary dance music producer from Huddersfield, based in London. Their work is heavily influenced by the percussive UK styles of jungle, garage and bassline, with a pinch of nü-metal’s distortion and adolescent energy thrown in for good measure.

Tomgirl, their newest release on Mantissa, showcases these stylistic influences across four tracks that move between wonky 4/4 techno, amen-heavy jungle, spacey 140 and swampy chugging house, playing with the idea of floating somewhere between masculinity and femininity, hard and soft.

After experimenting with samples of their own voice on their debut album ‘The place where my voice should be’ (self-released in March 2022), the EP builds on this technique to create eerie atmospherics and strange rhythms in a more club-focused and dance floor orientated zone.

Tomgirl is topped off with a remix by Bristol’s Bex, channeling a potent strain of bassy, stepping techno that her productions and DJ sets have become famous for."
