I taught English in Japan for a year and living near me was a guy named Jon from Maine, USA who became a dear friend. After the year was up I returned to New Zealand and he went to New York to study, and teach part time at a high school. There he met Claire, a fellow teacher. They hit it off and after a time moved in together. I emailed Jon to see how NYC was treating him, and he said he didn't really have money to go out "but I'm happy to stay in with my love". I was touched by that and wrote and recorded a rough demo of this song for them as a gift when they later got married. 

A huge thanks to Gary Sunshine for lending his incredible talents to the song.

A Love to Stay in For - ft. Gary Sunshine

Last week I put this track out as a standalone piano improvisation but right away people started to see its potential as a song. To date I’ve received four versions and there are quite a few more in the pipeline. I’ve started a group for all these versions at

Anyway, since I’ve been asking people to sing along, and since I’m in the mood for breaking out of my comfort zone, I’ve made my own vocal version. I’m not a singer, never will be, I’m under no illusions about that, but it’s been fun to try.  And after so many years of making music it’s unnerving to hear myself for the first time doing what comes so much more naturally to so many of you.....which is why I'd love to hear you doing it instead!  Thank you for indulging me.

As for the words, it's one of those songs you write without thinking why, but I guess it's about some of the crazy reasons why people fall in love

"She is ... " is a small tune I wrote for my wife and daughter. Jamming playing around with some chords and a theme based on the D-major scale.

This is the new mixed version where I have tried to add a bit more air and life to the mix with special focus on the drums.

You are hard (harsh), like the death's grasp

Thirsty "Croesuses", humble pilgrims came
and from your garden's fountain, you never gave (allowed) them a drink 

* Athanasia : name of a Woman, but also the Greek word for : "immortality".
* mint :  It was very common for people to cut a little twig, just couple of mint leaves and hold or wear on their clothes. You would give some mint to someone (like you would a daisy I guess in yester days) to show love and care (mint is also renown for its healing purposes) so, to sort of keep that person safe from harm's way.
