Pat Brick aka DJ Life has been on a steady rise since his debut record released in 2019 with Echocentric Records, corresponding with the labels first release. The Aussie DJ and producer has since had a total of eight releases with prominent underground labels such as Dansu Discs, R.A.N.D. Muzik, and most recently, Lobster Theremin’s Distant Horizons sublabel. The energetic and fun take at combining prog, trance and techno has landed DJ Life’s name amongst the top in his league of sound.

We caught up with DJ Life on this edition of MIXED BY to discuss a bit about his music production, influences and the Australian underground dance music scene.

On the heels of down under, Perth, Australia is home to DJ/Producer Guy Contact, a stomping ground to augment and expand the “Sounds from the Ecosystem”. Guy Contact’s groove-directed discography has made its name in Euphoria Simulations LP (on Haŵs label) and infiltrated the texturized Liminal Spaces EP (on Butter Sessions label). All appropriately named and inclusive, his past releases are upbeat and full of acidic verve,  Slowing things down a bit, Drinking from the Mirage is his newest and most liberated album yet presently basks in some warmer tones with the Melbourne-based Butter Sessions Label. The product was the aftermath of Guy Contact’s transition from his position in the architect arena to a full-time builder on the electronic plane. This morning, coffee in grips, we take a moment to discuss the latest slower-tempo release, its content, and what came about from the debut collaboration. To tie it up, we chat about the hopes ahead for the industry’s topography and what lies behind the curtain of Oz’s current climate.

Fantastic Man has become one of the most exciting and revered producers on the circuit having released music on the likes of Mule, Love on the Rocks and Kitjen. He is also the founder of Superconscious Records alongside Griffin James.

As a DJ his musical taste is broad and wide ranging, drawing upon far reaching influences from the realm of House, Trance, Downtempo, Balearic and beyond. As such you never quite know what you are going to get but that's all part of the fun right?

Most recently he has been dabbling in a fast paced, new age approach to House and Trance - channeling the free spirited energy of the 90's and a sun kissed era for dance music.

Some might feel it to be nostalgic but he is very much at the forefront of a new wave of producers and DJ's looking to breathe life into and reinvigorate the sound.

This mixtape is one of the best we've heard in a while and is rightly suited to a Friday.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
