"While putting the mix together I had an early morning slot in mind, taking over the decks to accompany the crowd after an already long night out - A situation which I miss like nothing else for more than a year now. As I am kept my daily routine finding new tracks, I have mixed my current favorite pieces of music out of my collection and tried to build a journey that will hopefully take place in reality again very soon. Hailing from Bonn, Germany - Jonathan Kaspar is an integral part of the scene in Cologne. He is a resident at the city's renowned Gewölbe club and also one of the current main figures at the legendary Kompakt label. While Kaspar is constantly reinventing himself, he continues what he loves the most - being a DJ and producer!

Kaspar loves to play extra-long DJ sets building up a journey together with the crowd. Holding a residency at one of Germany's main spots in regards to underground electronic music clubs, Gewölbe, he regularly invites national and international guests to play extended nights with him while his busy DJ schedule has been built around that. 2021 started off with his much-acclaimed follow-up EP for Kompakt, including the track "Beton" which reached #1 in the Beatport Indie Dance chart for several weeks.

Terr is the project of Daniela Caldellas, a Barcelona-based DJ-producer who grew up in Brazil’s Belo Horizonte. After spending her earlier years playing guitar in several punk bands, she asked her friends to teach he the basics of “computer music” only to unearth an infatuation with electronic production at the age of 19.

Born in 2016 as Caldellas’ first solo project, the TERR moniker stems from the the 1970’s film “Fantastic Planet”: It is the name of the main human character. The debut release, a three-track EP titled ‘Burn the Past’, landed on Scuba’s Hotflush Recordings, followed in early 2017 with ‘Misantropicalia’ which “extended Terr’s musical horizons,” Caldellas explains. Her most recent release on Correspondent Records, the sprawling Neuromancer EP, has elevated Terr to a serious global contender. Stay tuned for her upcoming EP ‘Dust’ which will be released on the 5th of October through her own label Clash Lion.

Naming himself after one of the biggest sweet water lakes in the world, namely the Baikal Lake in Russia, Berliner by love Mark Bijl refers to his artist name merely at a characteristically level, notably when it comes to his deep productions, while deep in this context means the level of involvement that Baikal contributes to his tracks or musical approaches. Having released several but altogether only few EPs on his co-founded label Maeve, which he runs with The Drifter and Mano Le Tough, over the years, it‘s inevitably to say that Baikal puts quality over quantity. Either the label‘s first release ever, Just You And Me, or the second installment Why Don‘t Ya? remixes, published in 2012 and 2013 were massively supported by scene‘s key-players and allowed the newly founded label as well as Baikal a tremendous start after wiping off his Mark August moniker. His Pelican‘s Flight single, the third release under the belt of Baikal, took the artist quite a moment or three years for various and partly personal reasons. Another three years later, 2019 to be precise, he‘s released his last single, Hear Me, up to date, a tender techno two tracker that stands out due it‘s precise arrangement and the paradox of making deep and dark elements sound warm. The latter basically describes Baikal, the person, the artist, the multi-faceted producer at a personal level, as a person.

Torture the Artist - your source for contemporary electronic music

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
