Exclusive: Will Saul - Avalon

Aus Music-founder Will Saul’s Avalon track is not to be missed as AVA. Records, co-run by Damiano von Erckert, rings in their musical festivities for the 10th anniversary with a compilation, that contains contributions from the who-is-who of the House scene, among them Move D, Cinthie, Jus-Ed, Ron Trent, Damiano himself and Saul. The latter’s track is the first release after his Your Time Is Up EP in 2020 on his own imprint and therefore highly anticipated - with good reasons and correctly as Will Saul does not disappoint. Avalon does not only convince because of its spaced out cosmic chord sequences that burn themselves deeper and deeper into the listener’s mind as the track proceeds, but it’s the combination of the synth- and the break-esque bass line that makes the take so emotive and guarantees addictivity.

Following hot on the heels of lead single and recent mind-body tantalizer “I Feel Stronger Now,” we are now truly proud to present you with Portable’s latest full-length My Sentient Shadow. Filled to the brim with all of the inventiveness the sonic auteur has commanded we expect from his sizable and consistent body of work on world- renown labels such as Perlon, ~scape, !K7, and his own Süd Electronic and Khoikhoi imprints, and dare we say offering us perhaps the most cohesive, emotive, and balanced of his highly-admirable catalog here to date. By using the analogy of a shadow that possesses its own consciousness, the theme of light and its distortion vs balance with the inherent and necessary darkness that surrounds it is in clear vision.

Immediately from the warmly bizarre vibes of opening cut “The Simulacrum”, it’s clear Portable is requesting clearance to other worlds of funk and ingenuity. The delightfully trippy, smoky, back-room of the Tattooine Cantina feel sets the stage just right to curb expectations and let the carefully constructed noise movements wash over us. Elsewhere amongst the generous set we find tracks like “Cages” and “Ripple Effect” continue in the direction of horizontally-maximized aural tapestries oozing with texture, while at the other end of the energy spectrum pieces such as “The Self-Assembling” and “We Exist..” roll and bounce with all the sci-fi gyrations and slick synth layers hinting at a hypnotic halfway rendezvous point to his Bodycode moniker. And of course, no proper Portable outing would be complete without his own robust tenor vocal tone, which feels right at home front-and-center on the space travel anthem “The Spacetime Curvature” and used in more calculated micro-doses on “Analogue World”, as well as the gorgeous “Foreign to You” whose meta-title features a rare guest starring vocalist NiQ.E, and brings to hearts some of Herbert’s finer moments with dear friend Dani Siciliano, albeit done-up entirely in some distant yet alluring parallel dimension. The LP journey finishes with the frenetically-charged closer “Fractal Distortion” which will no doubt please many-a cosmic techno purist while making percussion masters from the afterlife such as Jaki Liebezeit and Tony Allen proud, and is quite possibly the closest thing to a danceable musical take on the current state of cognitive dissonance in the world that surrounds us, offering us a one-way ticket out from the not-too-distant future. While drawing influences from his 90’s house heroes and indie disco contemporaries, in the studio, he never compromises to explore new boundaries by utilising his own vocals and playing with unique song arrangements while exploring sounds across the downtempo stratosphere, from slow kaleidoscopic hypnotic dances to chugger-heavenly club heaters.

We are happy to announce the debut EP of the Rotterdam based contemporary artist and musician Silas Schletterer aka Machinegewehr. After his track ‘The Maze’ on a well received Lost Tapes Vol. 4, he is no stranger to the AEON camp anymore.
Known from his releases on Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondent and Amsterdams finest Bordello A Parigi, Machinegewehr delivers a strong 3 track debut EP with the title ‘Nutant’.
The EP kicks off with DeVilleneuve: 80's vibes are not new to the Rotterdamer, but for this track he tried something new. A dark approach yet joyful at the same time. A modern/ futuristic summer song about 2 lovers, that spend the most happy time together. For now and forever. “Life is so much better with your soulmate by your side...” Machinegewehr says and thats the message of the song.
Nothing less should be transported in the remix of the label boss Alex Niggemann. His ‘Blazing In The Sun Remix’ fully represents and lives up to the name. Happy sunny vibes inspired late 70’s Disco and early 80’s Italo a la Lime & Paul Parker, reinterpreted in a modern way. Probably the happiest song we have ever heard from Alex.
Clearly recognisable that „Down in the storm" was inspired by old school electro that uses space and trippy melodies to tell this adventurous story that keeps you focused from beginning to end.
Nutant, the title track comes closest to Machinegewehr signature sound. The classic Italo, 80's, Sci-Fi vibes, made for the dance floor. A track with lots of energy that will make you want to move, but at the same time lifts people up to follow this journey through space.
"When I finished this EP, I really wanted to look for a label that rhymed with the vibe of this new EP. As the 3 tracks are pretty different from each other, but together form an EP that to me feels new and original, AEON felt like the perfect label to me.“ Machinegewehr says.

Torture the Artist is a webzine, or a magazine made for the internet, geared towards those with a passion for contemporary electronic music, with subgenres including Techno, Tech House, Deep House and Eletronica, as well as a small amount of Indie and Alternative. Founded in 2014 by Holger Breuer, a German native and lover of the arts, Torture the Artist now consists of five team members from all around the world.

In addition to publishing interviews, music reviews, DJ charts and track premieres, the webzine hosts out a  podcast series called 'art:casts'. This medium gives DJs and producers the artistic freedom to highlight their different musical styles while not being restricted by factors such as setting, and connecting them to a wider audience. 

Being in its ninth year, Torture the Artist has gained a strong and active online support group, including music enthusiasts to label managers and artists themselves, creating a cohesive community with music as their bond.
