DJ Koze's 2013 album opus Amygdala has continued to bewitch all who encounter it since its release. Tipped as his own personal Sgt. Pepper, the sublime long-player revealed a fully-realised and personal body of work, complete with a classic songwriting at its core, House in its heart, and veins coursing with psychedelic color. La Duquesa' was the album's dreamy single standout, a journey into deep, tropical ecstasy. XTC' begins in the same spirit, and captures the all the blissful allusions of its name, but its initial gentility belies the deep intensity to come. Floating pads glow with celestial ambience as a kick drum is gradually coaxed into solid form, and the introduction of spoken text begins the second act. Many people are experimenting with the drug Ecstasy,' it says, ...is the drug like the lie and meditation the truth Or am I missing something that could really help me". XTC' then transforms: sweetly imploring tones become demanding, gentle gradients between chords turn hard-edged, and sharp hi-hats cut through the haze. Complete with Koze's signature percussive quirks, it drives towards the track's final pay off: an undeniable, all-consuming, irresistible high. Knee On Belly' recalls Koze at his most tongue-in-cheek and overt, it is bright, bold and literally brassy, using cut-up horns of all shapes and sizes to patchwork together his own unique arrangement. With the highs and mid ranges accounted for, Koze adds in a swollen, thrumming bass line to mix to bring this floor-filler to life. Knee on Belly' recalls a raw, filtered and funky approach to groove, with a nod to disco house and the art of artful sampling, as it orbits between its own neon highs and simmering lows.

The production provides a comforting embrace while Ill Camille and SiR serves up extra helpings of confidence in their careers. They should encourage you to follow suit.

Ill Camille had this to say about the track via email:

So the inspiration for the track came from a conversation [with] some friends about how much we experienced in the last year, to us ultimately concluding that we were closer to reaching our goals than we thought. It’s a hopeful record. Just want everyone, the homies, my loved ones, to stay encouraged on the path so this is sort of the vibed out soundtrack for it. This song is released apart of Sofie’s SOS Mixtape on Stones Throw Records.

'Structures And Light’ is the first record from Group Zero (Cathal Cully - Girls Names)

“Here’s a record from a Belfast bedroom that sounds nothing like the city, past or present. It’s made with synths and drum machines, and it glistens with subtle Euro sophistication.”

Written, recorded and mixed intermittently over four years, the narrative of ‘Structures And Light’ is bound by a deepening connection with electronics, instrumentation, and the studio.
With no imminent touring schedule or release deadlines, Cully built a modest home setup and began producing on his own again - “It was as an exercise in my own development and it was fun. It brought the naivety and spontaneity back to making music”.
Initially, it was for his personal consumption alone - selfishly indulgent.
In fact, this first collection of Group Zero music - along with a library of other ideas and sketches - was thought to be eternally lost and all but forgotten until a chance conversation with Touch Sensitive led to the tracks being salvaged and subsequently restored.

“Day breaks: dig those fast linear movements and rhythms (‘The Fantasist’). Then fall for the unexpected guitar line in ‘Pursuit’; a gentle kind of cold wave optimism.”

The genesis of this newly discovered musical freedom coincided with a viewing of ‘Pyramid of Light’ by Heinz Mack from the post-war Dusseldorf based Group Zero art movement which resonated deeply. “It stirred up questions and emotions which I could not get from a book or a screen. It was the direct relation between me, the light and the physical object hanging on the wall. New moments of beauty locked in the memory. I was in awe.”

“Night heals: there’s ‘pummelling repetition’ here too, for the club freaks or shut-ins. Slow, industrial shocks that give way to ‘Pyramid of Light’s stark new-age burst.”

Cully was also taking influence from a range of contemporary electronic producers - on labels such as LIES, Diagonal, Optimo Music, Blackest Ever Black, and PAN: “These records felt as much in keeping with post-punk traditions and my own DIY background whilst tapping into the primitive ideas of masters such as Cluster, Suicide, Malaria! and the proto-techno of pre-club music.”
Just as a structure obscures or reflects light furnishing us with new ways of seeing; the propulsive rhythms in 'Structures And Light’ reveal subtle differences on each repeated cycle.

Constructed with 4 Oscillators and 130 Samples, as the title would suggest, Glare coalesces these limitations into nth World psychedelia. In his words...

"4 Oscillators And 130 Samples At 130 BPM is one realisation of an idea with unknown possibilities from a combination of oscillators and a series of looped samples. The recording was made live, without editing. 

Live synthesis is performed with two identical analog waveshape oscillators with 2/4 pole resonant lowpass filter and Voltage Controlled Amplifier. Control voltages are generated by the digital processors to control the analog components. Two digital processors with 48kHz 24bit sample rate provide the second set of two identical oscillators, both with envelope following, high-pass filter, distortion, pan, delay, tuned feedback and modulation calculations (envelopes, LFOs, routing). The oscillators are “reset” for the beginning of each performance, allowing for synthesis to be sculpted from the same starting point, with no fixed end-goal other than responding to the samples being triggered. 

The 130 samples originate from various sources – ‘found sounds’ recorded on a mobile phone, synthesis, drum machines, musical instruments, fx units and the occasional vocal sample from charity shop vinyl. Each sample has been edited to loop at 130 BPM and then been processed (often more than once) through phase, reverb and EQ and re-recorded by a variety of means; filtered through the oscillators, onto tape, digitally, re-amped through a vacuum tube EQ and 4x12” or 4x10” speaker cabinet. In essence there are four types of sample: beat, synthesis (bass), synthesis (lead), synthesis (atmospherics). For performance, all 130 sounds are loaded onto samplers randomly, so that it is unclear which sound will be triggered, allowing for each performance to involve the samples in different combinations. There is no limit to how many samples can be triggered at once. Samples may be used more than once. The samples can be performed ‘clean’ or processed through further effects units (phase, reverb, delay, EQ, pitch shift, distortion). There is no fixed length for the performance - a performance finishes when the final sample has been triggered..."
