A 3.5 minute excerpt of the fully generative, never repeating music composition system for Universal Everything's V&A Forever installation in the John Madejski garden of the Victoria & Albert Museum London (Nov 2008 - Feb 2009).

The music was composed in realtime (in Java/OpenAL) using a custom developed generative system which strategically picked instruments from a library of approx. 250 single-note base samples, designed by Simon Pyke (@freefarm). These samples are then algorithmically arranged in real time into polyrhythms, chords, melodies of varying densities & intensities. All of these rhythms, chord progressions, the melodic phrases themselves, repetitions, transpositions, key & tempo changes are entirely generative & evolving, using a variety of techniques. E.g. cellular automata are playing a central role to generate multitimbral and polyrhythmic melodies/phrases, which then are randomly mutated to produce key changes and entirely new variations over time. The overall tempo of the composition was varied between ~65 - 130 bmp via layered (additive) sine waves, similar to the concept of a biorhythm, creating a larger soft arc/transition to a more up-beat character towards the end of the installation (after 2+ months).

I developed a custom GUI tool to allow Simon and me to define the macro configuration of the composition system, assign individual metadata for each of the 250 instruments/samples (e.g. pitch/octave ranges, min/max tempos, tags, usage probabilities at certain times, group associations, exclusions with other instruments). It took ~5 months of daily fine tuning and listening to hundreds of hours of generated outputs to create this composition system. Yet, once the installation was live, an entirely new & different (within the parameters) composition resulted and so put us on equal footing with any other visitor/listener.

V&A Forever Excerpt

"It's a Mediterranean blue spilling from my heart, filling me up. Cool, deep, fathomless - between light and dark." 

This is how poet Gainor Ventresco describes "the perfect blue" in one of their poems. While it's unlikely that Ventresco had any ties with Italian DJ and producer Luigi Tozzi, these words perfectly capture the sensation that Tozzi's music evokes. Connected to the Mediterranean and deeply passionate about the ocean, his "Deep Blue" series transports listeners to a peaceful dreamlike state. The vastness of the universe and our subconscious worlds are perceptible within its depths.
Tozzi's refined take on techno in his live sets and productions has gained him increasing attention over recent years. Not to forget his impeccable storytelling skills as a DJ (highly recommend the Acquario Immersioni Sets Pt. 1 & 2), specifically showing up in longer DJ sets where the light and the dark go hand in hand, as they do so in life. 
Luigi shared with us a Live Podcast featuring some unreleased material - this mix is enveloping and absorbing simultaneously.  It is in such a way, that one could feel getting pulled into a magical vortex.

On our wishlist for our mix and Artist of the Moment series for some time now, we connected with this highly analytical, extremely dedicated, genuine and kind artist from Rome.

Bio:

Salva Coromina  aka ABSIS. 
His involvement in the Barcelona scene began in the late 90s under the alias MouseDown/MouseUp, having years of experience as Dj resident in club such as Razzmatazz (The loft) and festivals like Sonar.
He has always been exploring the deeper side of electronic music, moving from ambient to techno. ABSIS currently runs his residency at Laut club in Barcelona with the Midline parties... he is also a resident at the MOSTRA festival in Barcelona and his productions are published on labels such as hivern discs, Affin and Oslated among others.
