Monologues boss Ben Gomori's edits of African classics for Sterns Edits and Africa Seven have won fans far and wide, with DJs from Optimo to Hunee, Folamour, Horse Meat Disco and TSHA getting behind them. He continues this acclaimed body of work with this new release, carving up two gems and adding a little juice to them in the process. First up, a joyous slice of 1980s Camerooon from Emmanuel Kahe Et Jeanette Kemogne on 'Ye Medjuie', where rousing trumpet refrains meet undulating bass funk. Then the deep dubby skank of Nigeria's Akaba Man & The African Pride's 'Popular Side' goes on a Metro Area-flavoured excursion with distorted Melodica blasts rubbing up against a sweet-but-trippy synth solo and haunting vox synths.

‘City To City: Johannesburg’ is the first in a new series of V/A releases which will shine a light on exciting producers from a different city for each edition. What better place to start than The City Of Gold, somewhere synonymous with deep and soulful house and whose scene and artists have finally begun to get global recognition despite the relative geographical isolation. Labels such as Kid Fonque’s Stay True Sounds have been an important platform for South African artists and who can deny the incredible journey of Black Coffee. Deep house really is a way of life for many young people growing up in often challenging conditions and it’s been exciting to see many becoming known outside of their own country and starting to gig internationally.     Here on the debut ‘City To City’ we showcase 6 tracks from 6 different artists hailing from Johannesburg, relative newcomers rubbing shoulders with more established names.  Kicking off the release we have one such producer who has been slowly but surely stamping his mark over the last 10 years: KaySoul. With output having appeared on labels such as Shall Not Fade, Dirt Crew, Lazy Days and Tribe KaySoul is definitely making waves with his soulful take on the South African deep sound. ‘Icey Baby featuring Mr Beale’ keeps things raw and minimal, letting the vocal stay front and centre, a naivety and playfulness giving an almost demo-feel to the production.     Sculpturedmusic steps up next with ‘Midnight Talk’. Another SA artist who has earned his stripes with some huge tracks including Sad To Think which deservedly became a substantial hit, Sculpturedmusic’s contribution to the release keeps things deep, percussive and rolling with an African vocal sample backed up by pensive piano chords. With just a handful of releases on his own Herbal Soundz label as well as the much-lauded vinyl label Adeen, SizLeCaude is one of the exciting up and coming artists worthy of attention. Taking a classic early 00’s deep house approach on ‘Far Apart’ he .

It’s a pleasure to present the ‘Within’ EP, from Brooklyn-based producer JKriv. An unexpected musical statement by the Razor-N-Tape co-founder that draws from his varied musical history, including conservatory Jazz training, decades of producing in various styles of music, and touring as a live musician.  A realization of projects that were begun anywhere from 2 to 12 years ago, these pieces were written, produced, and performed almost entirely by J alone.  Inspired by Larry Heard, Alice Coltrane, Azymuth, and Nala Sinephro, the ‘Within’ EP blends acoustic with electronic elements, and digital production techniques with analog hardware to craft a sound that centres space, subtlety, and introspection. 
 
Opener ‘Tuesday Morning’ strikes a wistful tone, with billowing waves of effected guitar, enveloping pads and driving organic percussion. The understated and meditative title song of the EP layers rich analog synth textures over a foundational bass pattern, as electronic and acoustic drum polyrhythms interact in the unusual 5/4 time of the song . ‘Eversweet’ balances a whimsical harmonic and melodic motif with modular synth stabs and flourishes, ultimately building to a churning spiritual peak. ‘The Disturbance Stays’ juxtaposes a driving and insistent rhythmic backbeat with soaring synth work from keyboard wizard Jason Lindner (David Bowie, Donny McCaslin Band). The parting message ‘Shine ur light’ is a hopeful and meditative breath, awash in delayed and dusty guitar, lush synth pads and a gentle rhythmic pulse. And as an epilogue, ‘Without’ isolates the hypnotic percussion track ‘Within.’ 
 
The songs on this EP each have their own emotional focus, but collectively are meant to embody feelings of space and warmth, peace, and conflict. 
All profits from this EP will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund and HEAL Palestine. Cease-fire now. Peace to all.

In our 20th celebration year we welcome back Loz Goddard! It’s been quite a while since we last saw him on our label. With his standout debut collab release with Harry Wolfman in 2016 he has developed a unique mix of electronica, deep soundscapes and lush organic Deep House on labels such as “Oath”, “Razor N Tape”, “Church”, “Outplay” and “Apparel Music”. Now he finally returns with a mini album that features beautiful crafted ambient and electronica cuts paired with three upbeat tracks that will for sure shake the dance floors in and outdoors this summer! Enjoy!

In his own words, here are some insights on the influences and production process of these six pieces:

The release is named after a night in the White Hotel in Salford watching Skee Mask. At the time I had a bunch of unfinished ambient ideas as a result of making “Balloon Tree Road” (out on Oath). There were a lot of ideas I still loved that didn’t get finished for that release, so I set about finishing them late 2022 & early 2023 with the view to releasing an EP or ‘mini album’ that was again angled a bit more towards home-listening.

The more upbeat tracks are newer jams that I created in 2023. I wanted to include a few club-ready tracks on the record as well, so the release appeals to DJ’s as well as home listeners. I approached the production much like my past two records on Oath, with lots of live drum elements, some sampling and a mixing approach which keeps everything sound warm and organic. It’s rough round the edges - as has been the case with my productions of late - and offers a nice contrast to my DJ sets and radio shows at the moment, in which I am playing mostly Deep/Progressive House, Breaks & Techno.

There’s some influence on the title track from the Deep & Lo-Fi House sound of artists like Baltra & Mall Grab, and I have taken influence from all the breaks I’ve been playing in DJ sets for ‘How’s This for a Vague Song Title’.

11 tracks originally released on the indie dance label GOMMA RECORDS between 2001 and 2010. (Gomma was the label Toy Tonics did before starting Toy Tonics.)
Along with DFA and Output records Gomma released a wild mix of electronic dance music, indie rock, underground disco, post punk and new wave funk that was big in the 2000s. The Y2K sound!

Gomma released music by artists like Peaches, Whomadewho, The Rammellzee, James Murphy, LCD soundsystem and artists like Nick McCarthy of Franz Ferdinand.
Now it’s 2024 and it feels fresh to put a spotlight on some of these tracks again. 
And so here comes a 2nd compilation part of Gomma tracks:
Nancy Whang the singer of LCD Soundsystem, WhoMadeWho (the band started their career on Gomma), Italian disco producer Bottin, UK Indie Disco hero The Deadstock 33s aka Justin Robertson, NY Disco hipsters In Flagranti, German producers Munk and many more on this compilation.

Fresh new label Holybro is the creation of Dutch DJ & producer Ray Monsieur. Hailing from the European dance capital of Amsterdam, his thoughtful and melodic compositions are infused with depth, warmth, and emotions. On his debut release ‘Stronger’, the hypnotic arrangements each tell a musical story. Created in the attic of his parents’ house, when circumstances forced him to return home for a spell, on a Roland TR8S drum machine and a SH101, the soft synth sounds have been lovingly created by Ray, with mixing and mastering courtesy of Nachtbraker (Quartet Series, Red Light Radio and Doka Amsterdam).
 
The majestic opener ‘Forget’ will lift arms, minds, and spirits when it drops, a heads down stomper for the ALFOS faithful no doubt.  ‘My Love’ uses only the feel-good notes in its joyous blend of colourful synth melodies, undulating electronic strings, and soft synth touches. The dreamy yet dynamic techno of title cut ‘stronger’ is bright and reflective. It’s melody is both filtered and drawn out, the resultant music is effortlessly pleasing and awash with a wave of melodic sheen. Closing track ‘Sunshine’ is music made with machines for machines. Trance-inducing hypnotic electronica blended with a heady chord sequence that drives this EP all the way home.

Following in the footsteps of the longed-for 2021 reissue of their seminal EP, ‘It’s The Life’, Detroit's very own guild of disco wizards Billy Lo - alias Billy Love, Darryl Tiggs and Darren Abrams - return to Cosmocities with their first album, ‘Billy Lo’. A flavorful bomb of soulful Motown aromas, Paradise Garage-esque suavity and shuffling house rhythms brought to a hedonistic simmer, the trio’s latest packs the kind of debonair charm and infectious funk that shall make as much damage on the dance floor as it will in the alcove.

The A-side starts off with ‘Pain’, a slice of satin-smooth house churn in true Detroit house style that engineers a fine euphony of classic piano twinkle, morning workout programming, stealth bass manoeuvres and shrill strings. The perfect scenery for Billy Love’s vocals to bloom in all their swinging sensuality. True to its name, the all-instrumental ‘Chill’ goes a further bass and drums-blazing route, all in generous synth sines and ovoid bounce, whereas ‘Let Ur Body Werk’ unfolds as a spirited, Afrofunk-tinged chugger bound for tireless boogie, focussing on Love's hypnotic vocal hoodoo, sturdy bass traction and a feast of incendiary congas sure to whip up the attendance into a frenzy at any time of the day. 

Flip it over and here’s the B-side up with some intoxicating jazz business for the late hours. Dishing out a fiery combo of space-discoid slap bass, sun-bleached piano chords and heavily filtered loops, ’Sho Me Ur Love’ is juicy entanglement in a bottle. All in slowed-down voluptuousness, the loungey bop number ‘Flavors’ reels out like a washed-out dream, vaporous and lush as it gets. Topping off the journey on a hi-NRG spin, ‘Do Ur Thang’ pulls out a playful collage of heavy-duty bass propulsion, obsessive synth motifs and ebullient pep talk sure to have you going hard all night long.
