This is a soundtrack to imaginary nightime streetscapes in a world that resembles our own.

Crumbling asphalt slick with oil and grease reflects the woozy glow of late night bodegas in acrid pink, yellow and green.

Drakkar Noir is a feceless figure who inhabits this world, an alias shamelessly lifted from a sleazy and long out-of-fashion scent, a brand name derived from a mashup of mythical pretensions and hollow advertising jargon. Part Human and part digital fiction, Drakkar Noir is, like the city itself, a shapeshifter who feeds and is fed by the collective dreams and nightmares floating above the buildings and into smoke-filled skies.

Against The Dark

Against The Dark EP | Preview [LCTR004]

Ninechecker grew up in a town near Liverpool in the north west of England. He fell in love with heavier styles of music, of which Electro was the favourite flavour. In his late teens he witnessed Dave Clarke destroy dances at Liverpool's beloved Voodoo and Bugged Out! nights and set about making his own Tech/Electro. 
Years later, having settled in Toronto, Canada, after living in London and Berlin, he reassembled his studio and started making his own interpretation of Electro, taking inspiration from field recordings, 90's Jungle, 808 heavy Miami Bass and Trap, Techno, weird, unsettling ambience and dark, doomy electronics to create his own Gutter Electro.
He's been playing live hardware sets around Ontario, and has releases on Varial Records, Zodiac Wax, Supercomputer AV, Orson and forthcoming on Brokntoys.
"Electro seems to always be off to the side of the stage, never in the spotlight. Well, not since its 80's heyday. And maybe that's for the best, cos we create what we create in the shadows. Out of sight. Underground.... and personally, that's how I like it".

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- 1997 Techstep D&B, No U-Turn, Dom & Roland, DJ Krust, Elements OF Noize, Source Direct, early Korn, Deftones, Sepultura, Dave Clarke DJing at Voodoo and Bugged Out! in Liverpool was a huge influence... seismic actually. Early Warp Records. Basic Channel and Chain Reaction, Pole, Anthony Rother. DHR. John Peel's radio show. Liverpool's record shops. 

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- I’ve just released an EP on Orson records called Generating Coastline which the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! I'm very happy. Also my I Can't Fight Your programming EP has been re-released by Varial Records too! 
Upcoming, I have a Brokntoys EP coming out at the end of year, which is huge! Hopefully another one on Orson Records too. Plus more stuff on more labels that I can't talk about yet. I also have created a live hardware set that I've been rocking parties here in Ontario. 

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- There are a bunch of Electro labels that I really admire, in no order; Avoidant, CHP, Mechatronica, Orson, Cyber Domain, Brokntoys, Dionysian Mysteries, No Static Automatic, Fides, Varial, Censor, Science Cult, Gated, PSI49Net, SCSI, Trust, LDI, Devine Disorder, Facecontrol Audio Industries, Specimen, CPU, Dead Channel, Dock 34, Computer Controlled, Zodiac Wax, DVSNME, Bass Agenda. I don't listen to any new D&B or Techno tbh... a few bits and bobs. What's really fizzing my bits is Ben Pest (who is amazing), Bitstream, G Jones, Shokh, Alex Jann, Brice Kelly, Keith & Kevin, Ekata, Siak PHD, Mat Carter, Assembler Code, Piska Power, Danny Daze.... I can't think of them all... Human Rebellion, PTHGN, Aura Nox... is that enough? 

What inspires you now to create music?

- Making music is my main creative output now. I used to paint and draw, I've been an animator too, but music really conquered everything fairly early on. I still do sound design for video games, but music is fully mine. I try to create a vibe for each track that I compose, so it can exist in its own space. They aren't just functional DJ tools, with a beginning, middle and end, but creepy little scenarios. I like to hide things in my tracks. 

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- I have a desk where I can rotate the pieces of kit that I use depending on the type of music that I'm making.. Some notable pieces are my Elektron Octatrack, Digitakt and Syntakt, which I also use for my live shows. A digital Hydrasynth, and analogue Arturia Minibrute2S, RD8 808 clone, the awesome Lyra-8 drone synth, a 303 clone, Tascam 414 4-track tape machine and various pedals all recorded into Ableton on an old Mac. And a Zoom recorder to capture field recordings all over the place which get woven and buried into all my tunes.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- I’ve been influenced by various artists in recent years. I enjoy a wide range of music. Nils Frahm, the German pianist, has had always a significant impact on me.
Additionally, Hræfn, an Iranian DJ and industrial techno producer, played a role in my music journey, especially in the darker side of music.
And if we're talking about electro, listening to Volruptus' albums introduced me to a new aspect of my favorite style electro.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- My next set will be released on Parallax label.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- Currently, I have a great passion for the music of Serge Geyzel and Jadzia, and I admire their art deeply.

What inspires you now to create music?

- Without a doubt, my love for music is the first answer.
But then the lack of freedom and the illegality of raving in Iran. The challenges of working here give me even more motivation to persevere.

Bio (English) : Being a firm believer of detailed aesthetic, Transgression leaves nothing to chance in the way he sees the world. He particularly likes black tones and elegant sobriety, that he combines with pleasure with eccentricity and self confidence. As a permanent contradiction, Transgression is out of the box without being on the system’s fringe, claiming his own freedom of action, thinking and creating. Through the music, the artist regained of express himself, combining EBM’s darkness and melancholia with funk’s groove and techno’s depth. Transgression also cares a lot about details, valuing the story behind the tracks, where deep kicks and sharp tones meet driving basslines. As a result, his compositions are thick, influenced by EBM and Dark Electro, where emotions rule, as his debut EP, Phobophobia, released on the 12th of May, on Enlace Records.

Bio (French) : Adepte des esthétiques recherchées et de l’exception, Transgression ne laisse rien au hasard dans sa vision du monde. Il affectionne particulièrement le noir et la sobriété, qu’il concilie volontiers avec l’excentricité et l’affirmation de soi. Comme une contradiction permanente, Transgression se veut en dehors des codes sans être en marge du système, revendiquant une liberté d’agir, de penser et de créer qui lui appartiennent. Transgression retrouve sa capacité à s’exprimer à travers la musique, y mêlant la noirceur et la mélancolie de l’EBM au groove du funk et à la profondeur de la techno. On retrouve également chez Transgression le souci du détail, avec une attention particulière pour l’histoire racontée, où les sonorités tranchantes et les kicks profonds enjolivent les basses entrainantes. Il en résulte des compositions denses, aux couleurs EBM et Dark Electro, où les émotions sont multiples, à l’image de son premier EP, Phobophobia, sorti le 12 Mai dernier sur Enlace Records.

We are delighted to welcome ADJ back with his new live set with unreleased and forthcoming stuff after his acclaimed DJ set as part of our podcast series.

Which artists has influenced you the most? 

- It's really hard to say one artist who has influenced me the most as I've been playing for nearly 40 years and producing for 30 years so I will name a few of the biggest, not just for the music but the whole ethos.
My first influences in the 80's were people like RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, KRAFTWERK, GEORGE CLINTON, HASHIM, JAMES BROWN, UNKNOWN DJ, CYBOTRON/MODEL 500, a real mixture of funk and electro/hip hop. Then into the 90's definetly MIKE BANKS/UR for his/their whole ethos of faceless artists and djs who were not interested in fame but more about just spreading the sounds of the streets and underground parties.  
And artists like WEE DJS, CARL FINLOW, BITSTREAM/ADAPTA, BEN MILSTEIN, BOLA, PLAID, KHAN/AIR LIQUIDE Crew, PHOENICIA, SI BEGG, ANDREA PARKER.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- So as always there are lots of projects ongoing and recent stuff like my Renegade Transmission vinyl ep just released on SERENITY IN KEOS, our latest Pyramid Transmissions releases Alien Transmissions Vol 3 and J FRANK album this month.
I have just finished 2 remixes, one for PAUL HEIROPHANT for release on vinyl and one for Potential Differense due for release digitally and remixed one of my favourite artists in ADRIEN D'ELZIUS recently.
In Jan/Feb 24 the next release on PT will be the long awaited 2nd ADJ/PATHIC release on vinyl and in December I will re release my Bass, Blips and Other Dimensions LP with extra new tracks. This album was released nearly 15 years ago on PIP WILLIAMS' Shameless Toady label. I feel the IDM/Electro sound of the album was a bit out of it's time so I think it's time to let a new generation hear it. There is a whole lot more coming in '24 so keep your ears open and this live set gives a glimpse of some of my recent work, finished and unfinished!

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- I think there are a lot of great artists now, although you have to sort through a ton of generic music to find them. Artists like FLECK ESC, ISOLATED MATERIAL, CTRLS, SIGMA ALGEBRA, LECTRO COD E, J FRANK, ROEL FUNCKEN, SYRTE, BEN PEST, ADRIEN D'ELZIUS, HEXALYNE, GAMMA INTEL, HATCH, ERRORBEAUTY, POLADROID are all doing some really FRESH sounds and there are so many more great new and established artists out there doing amazing, forward thinking stuff. There's lots of labels releasing Dope material like SCIENCE CULT, WOODWORK, ANALOGICAL FORCE, MIND CONTROLLED RECTIFIER, ARKADA, PATTERNED MEDIA, MECHATRONICA our own PYRAMID TRANSMISSIONS to name a few. 

What inspires you now to create music?

- I suppose same as always man, my music is my rebellion to the main stream and the system, a lot of new people in the scene don't understand this yet, back in the day we had to fight to get this music heard, illegal raves, pirate radio stations, getting chased by police just to get this music out there, I still feel that street edge in everything I do.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- My studio nowadays is a mixture of some of my old analogue loves 808, 303, Teisco 110f monster synth (1979 made by ARP) and some newer pieces like Elektron Digitakt, Analogue Overdrive and Korg Monotron delay. I also use VST's for more synth and sound effects.
I really like to change things up, like some trax will have Digitakt/808 or Battery Drums/Digitakt or 808 and VST Drum synths etc. This way the beats always sound different for each track and the sounds are always fresh (I hope). I think variety is the spice of life, i make many styles and never try to sound like anyone else. That is most important to me, having my own style and sound, no matter what sounds i'm making.

Nez is a dj of all things techno/electro/acid/jungle and everything in between and has been djing regularly around the Irish underground electronic music scene since 1998. Refusing to be pigeonholed to anyone one scene has led Nez to sharing stages and warming up for the likes of Mala, Surgeon, Hudson Mowhawke, Kyle Hall, Supa DJ Dimitry from Deelite, DJ Deep, DJ Pete, Regis, Skream & Benga, Trevino, Marcel Dettmann, Trevino, Daniel Bell, Perc, Egyptian Lover, DJ Funk, Source Direct, Legowelt, Radioactive Man, Roy Davis Junior, Lil Louis, Blawan, Neil Landstrumm to name a small few. He's held down many residencies over the years and played around all around Europe which culminated in a Boiler Room set at AVA Festival in 2018. Currently he's running the Computer Controlled label and is part of the techno collective Coda.

Which artist has influenced you the most?  

- I'd have to say Dave Clarke.  He was the man that introduced me to so much great artists when I started getting into dance music.  From the banging European techno to Chicago house, deeper Detroit Techno and of course electro he was a major influence on my taste.  I still listen to both the Electro Boogie compilations regularly, two of the best electro mixes.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 

- Could be here all day listing people, the electro scene is healthier than ever at the mo, but off the top of my head people like Client 03, Sound Synthesis, iNFO, Ben Pest, DMX Krew, Moy, Umwelt, ERP, Serge Geyzel, Zeta Reticula and have all been releasing buy on sight records.

As he says he is pushing a futuristic electro sound, expanding the accelerated and deep frequency range going through several very versatile styles and the idea is to continue creating new sounds in his future tracks. Saigg will be announcing some of his new works in very near future so keep an eye on this talented Argentinian!

Threads Radio Show - 21st December 2023

I built this track around a Jupiter-8 synth line that runs throughout, setting a dark, haunting tone. Even before adding any other instruments, I knew the track would be called “You Can’t Hide” because the melody carried such a somber, almost unsettling presence. 

As I layered in the rest of the instruments, I still felt something was missing and this is when I came up with a vocal sample in the second half of the track. I’ve always been drawn to working with vocal samples and often incorporate them into my productions. Having written songs and sung in the past, I am fascinated by the many ways the voice can be transformed and reused in music. In this track it definitely adds some extra dynamics, making “You Can’t Hide” a perfect electro track for dark dance floors.
