Dirty Soul

When Charlie said he was writing a new song inspired by "For Whom the Bell tolls", the rest of us naturally turned everything up to eleven and blazed through as many riffs as we could muster. If we'd been culturally aware enough to realise he was referencing an Ernest Hemingway novel he'd been reading and not the Metallica anthem, the song may have turned out very differently indeed. 
As it is, your hearing the band at full tilt, juxtaposed with lyrics influenced by Hemingway's tragic love story set during the Spanish civil war. It also came together around the time of the Arab spring and Charlie's Egyptian roots are keenly felt in what is also a call to arms.

Raze The Night

Having explored unrequited love on the previous album, Charlie turns his attention to forbidden love and the tale of an older guy trying to make a younger girl come away with him. Given this was written around the time of Operation Yewtree, Charlie was quick to highlight that both characters were of a consenting age. The man in question knows she will never be with him so muses about the "what if" possibilities of another life and making different choices. The Here For Now is about making the best of the present moment and not thinking about the future too much.

Song most likely to be used by: DFS advertising team for their 1 week only sofa sale bonanza "Here for now, only here for now.." OK you try and come up with something after only 2 hours sleep.

Here For Now

So....everyone alright? The band is very much in reflective mode and after looking through the songs we haven't shared with you yet, this seemed the most appropriate.

"Of all the miles we have to tread, oh these are the ones that take the strength"
Lyrics and imagery which may have inadvertently created a song for the post referendum world - whichever way you voted.

"Of all the tears we've shed all the wisdom we have shared, here's the most sincere"
Echoing those disappointed remainers who pointed to the advice of our politicians and chief economists.

"Lay bare your arms, what's one more mark on lions as they charge"
The above evoking the British lionheart courage that Brexit voters are encouraging everyone to adopt.

Finally, the bridge offers some solace to the reality we all face which is that of uncertainty.

"And I know that you're scared. What you find when you're there Is that in the end, it was the same in the end"

Yep, me neither. Anyway, that lyric from Cheated gets to join the likes of "thrum" from City, as words you're unlikely to ever hear outside of a Trail album. We liked it enough though to put it in our album title.

Killing Sun is Trail's 3rd single and features as a bonus track on their debut album "To the Rest of the World". It can be downloaded on iTunes or for free (in exchange for a Tweet or Facebook Like) at www.killingsun.com. 
Despite it's subtle vampire-associations (hence it's Halloween 2010 release date) the main influence for the track came early one morning after a heavy night's drinking and being painfully awoken by the sun breaking through a gap in the curtains.
