It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal, neoliberalist mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal.

Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

Each month we invite an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero- patriarchal systems of oppression.

Hiroshi Watanabe has been releasing records since 1996, with styles ranging from deep house to his more recognized ambient/electronica works on Kompakt under the guise of Kaito. A stalwart for the label for the past twelve years, Hiroshi has clocked up no less than eight albums and recently released the rather brilliant ‘Less Time Until The End’.

His passion for introspective electronic music is clearly visible in his latest release and his Kaito moniker is seemingly dedicated to this emotional side. Named after his son and translating as “the one that is able to explain the universe”, Kaito’s music is warm, analogue and immersive electronica, riddled with a million stories. Hiroshi’s a big believer in communicating through his music and opens up to the many ways a track can be perceived- he’s a storyteller, a painter of the night sky and the magician behind the soundtrack which accompanies them.

Hiroshi’s isolatedmix stems from this approach and takes us on a night-flight through some of his inspirations that span the spectrum of the ambient electronic genre – a perfect introduction to the newbie or an expertly curated accompaniment for the veteran. Hiroshi will be the guide, but you’ll make your own way there…

“I started with this kind of electronic music, mainly because my father created some very imaginative ambient music when I was child (around the late 70s). I was watching how he made the music and the sound seemed so impressive. It was because of this I fell in love with electronic music.

I love how the music can portray special images within each person – no-one the same, it’s impossible. There’s no need for vocals, or lyrics or words, just sound. I can close my eyes and it’s all I need – every person connecting to the universe through tension, energy and inspiration.

This is a selection of music which reflects that feeling – something special. Of course, there are tonnes to choose from and some amazing ambient music in the world, but this is just a little selection. Please enjoy the music and use your imagination to travel your own way”

Since 2014, UK-based label, https://soundcloud.com/astralindustries have been responsible for some of the most enlightening and entertaining releases of recent years. Their output has helped otherwise forgotten or out of print music see the light of day, provided new takes on previous classics, whilst also pushing forward new music by some of the most well-respected artists within the ambient genre. 

Debuting with a release by dub-techno legend DeepChord in 2014, Astral Industries went on to release Wolfgang Voigt's live project, Rückverzauberung Live In London in 2015.  In 2016 they followed with a 1985 recording from disbanded dutch collective Chi - a timeless and undoubtedly classic record, whilst in the same year pitching Wolfgang and Deepchord together for the very first time, with reinterpretations of Peter Michael Hamel's classic, Colors of Time. By then, and combined with the continually brilliant artwork of Theo Ellsworth, we knew that Astral Industries was a label with staying-power, and a growing catalog of releases worth collecting - be it just for the framed artwork, or moreover, the complete music package. 

In 2017, we've seen an LP by Heavenly Music Corporation, aka Kim Cascone (likely encouraged by the recent re-release of his own label Silent Records), a third LP by The Chi Factory, and then just last month a beautiful album by Waveform Transmission (Rod Modell of DeepChord and Chris Troy), with a sublime follow-up album, a massive 20 years after their first. 

The man behind the Astral Industries machine, Ario is a proven expert at plucking obscure gems from the past, or ensuring that good music gets the platform and artistic presentation it deserves. In just a few years, Ario has curated a highly respected and anticipated label roster that demands attention, and has yet to disappoint. The music is always gentle, deep and often extremely vivid, be it deeply hypnotic ambient, or gentle murmurs of dub-techno. 

With curatorial talents like this, we're overjoyed to host an exclusive 2hr+ mix of Ario digging into his record collection, and interlocking a few select exclusive Astral Industries bits in-between. It's one hell-of-a hypnotic journey and just like the Astral Industries releases, deserved of your full undivided, escapist attention.

As part of Isabel Lewis' week of ambient dances, she will collaborate for the first time with Lou Drago and Dambi Kim to continue physically a conversation about embodied listening to music that enhances perceptual sensitivity. 

Influenced by a range of perspectives from dance, performance studies, feminist and queer theory, Eastern Philosophy, ambient music and clubbing, Drago, Kim, and Lewis each approach the notion of somatic praxis in different ways. They share an interest in long-term engagement with embodied practices that potentiate moments, however fleeting, of a sense of connection with things beyond the singular subjectivity of the self. The music and vibe of the Day Rave seeks to hold space for the playful exploration of blurred identities and acknowledges peripheral perception. They aim to encourage connections with that which is greater than the self and especially through the use of dance as a form of communion and sociability that can activate not only inter-human relations but also relations to all things with which we co-exist.

Dambi Kim hosts daily tea ceremonies at Welt Ohne Außen's Tea Room. Being a host of meditative sounds, Kim delivers the serenity and transience of life through tea, incense, words, and sounds. Through playing a Korean traditional black zither, she was first introduced to the way of tea. Philosophically, Sen Rikyu’s wabi teaching immensely caught her mind. She simply wanted to put it into practice in her everyday life. She fell in love with Chinese tea during her sojourn in Europe before returning to Asia to learn Chinese tea and incense ceremony. Currently based in Seoul, Kim is working with workshops and performance that offer a minimum of visual distractions and focus on using all other senses of the human body. 

Lou Drago hosts the meditative-listening sessions, Suspending Time: Meditations for accessing alternate space/time at Welt Ohne Außen. This work explores drone and other areas of minimal music with the objective of accessing an alternate experiencing of time. Drago’s monthly show on Cashmere Radio, Transience, also seeks to allow space for listeners to suspend their daily stresses and anxieties. With a strong focus on ambient, drone, downtempo and experimental electronic music, Drago is drawn to the contrast between organic and otherworldly-sounds and dissolving the distinction between the two. 

Isabel Lewis is an artist working in multiple live formats where particular conditions are created for a celebratory meeting of things, people, plants, music, smells and dances. She plays and produces electronic music made to be experienced in a state of rest and relaxation. Lewis produces ambient yet rhythmic sound by sampling, layering, distorting, looping and morphing together fragments from a broad range of musical influences from medieval chamber music to Juicy J. Her slow tempo music uses pitch-shifted samples that are layered over other samples, fragments of pop music chopped and screwed then smoothed over and re-organised like a mutating body writhing and swaying. Lewis’ music is an uncanny collage of pop culture, transformed by digital effects into a sonic fabric that envelops the space at once familiar and strange as in a recurring dream.

After many EP’s released on the label of his early beginnings, Lett Records, it’s in 2018 that he produced his first album, «From Earth to Heaven», a smooth and poetic techno opus which will receive great feedbacks. Particularly prolific on the production side, his works can also be found on Warok Music, Precept, One Instruments, and more recently, the brilliant south korean label Oslated.

Constantly adapting and mixing his tracks with new creations, his live performances are always a unique experience. Surrounded by a few machines and also one deck that he uses as a sampler, Sanjib takes us into a mysterious and immersive travel in which are melting dub-techno infused rhythms and floating soundscapes.

This is the archive of our regular show on Cashmere Radio, Berlin. 

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing - or refusing - to fit the patriarchal, racist, neoliberal mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal. Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

Each month host @lou_drago invites an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate futures free from all systems of oppression.
