American born and raised, Matthew Mansfield wanted to learn more about the origins of traditional latin music genres Champeta, Cumbia and Chicha (also known as Peruvian Cumbia), it was during this research that the music of his Piper Street Sound moniker emerged. There’s a great synergy between reggae and traditional latin music, both of whose protagonists travelled from African via the Caribbean. Mansfield has forged a reputation as an innovative producer in the nu-cumbia and dub-reggae worlds, what Matt refers to as ‘transnational’ music. It’s a quaint yet apt description and indicative of the increasingly borderless movement of musical culture.

Argentinian label ZZK Records has had a significant influence on my musical tastes over the past decade so when I found out that Matthew Mansfield who runs the label was a producer and musician in his own right I was interested to hear more. Working under his Piper Street Sound moniker Matt is a dub reggae specialist, but his music is multi cultural and traverses the sounds of Latin America as much as the Caribbean and his home lands in the Southern states. 

For his Métron Musik Mixtape, Matt focuses on his own works, with original tracks, edits and remixes from the Piper Street Sound and DubConscious discography with a very deliberate focus on his Latin influences. His blend of organic sounds and traditional instrumentation with glitched synth works make for compelling listening.

Movimiento Para Cambio, is the full-length and debut for PAN from Montreal based duo Pelada. Comprising of vocalist Chris Vargas and producer Tobias Rochman, they have gained international attention through the city’s underground warehouse rave scene.

An urgent, headstrong body of work, the LP uses the music as a mechanism for delivering ideas central to the group’s moral and political ethos. Vargas explores themes of power, identity, surveillance and environmental justice atop Rochman’s raw mix of rave synths, acid basslines, breakbeats and dembow rhythms.

While at times unpredictable, the album is unified in its fast and loose approach. A Mí Me Juzgan Por Ser Mujer (‘I Am Judged Because I’m a Woman’) is an anti-machista anthem, stylistically nodding to NY house. Though Vargas doesn’t identify as a woman themselves, they understand their experience as a woman in an imbalanced patriarchal society that excludes women, femmes and non-binary people. Habla Tu Verdad (‘Speak Your Truth’) emphasizes the need to overcome the stigma around discussing sexual harassment, offering courage and strength to those who may need it. Asegura (‘Secure’) deals with the unprecedented power of Big Data, which monetizes a surveillance based economy through its users' data and behaviours.
These themes are set to fierce unrelenting bpms, nods to gabber, and samples of a reality show where young men compete in a prison fitness contest. Caderona (‘big hips’), features a hardline perreo-tinged beat that carries Vargas’ vocals with refreshing ferocity. Inspired by a cumbia song, Caderona offers a counterpoint to the male gaze, acting as an opportunity to demand space. Aquí describes the reality of a global corporate domination, where capitalist insatiability meets government inaction as we sit on the precipice of a mass extinction of our own making.

Pelada hope to inspire critical self- reflexivity through engagement, building power, demanding space and action. Or as it is written in their liner notes: ‘ABRE TUS OJOS, LA BESTIA SE ALIMENTA DE LA EXPLOTACIÓN' which translates to ‘OPEN YOUR EYES, THE BEAST FEEDS ON EXPLOITATION’.

The album is mastered by Jeremy Cox, featuring artwork by Johannes Schnatmann & Bill Kouligas.

At the start of 2020 a fellow DJ/vinyl collector, Tom B, invited me to come and spin at the March edition of legendary Avenida Brasil, one of the longest running BR-themed parties in Paris. He also challenged me to perform a live set on my MPC, specifically made for that night. Unfortunately a few weeks later everything was cancelled. But I kept on making beats, while sampling my Brazilian records. Weeks later this
album was born… It is the most personal album yet, it is an homage to my family’s Brazilian heritage and a dedication to my mother.

When I was still a small child, some of my very first music memories were the many faces of MPB artists “smiling” at me from the covers of my mother’s vinyl collection. I was born in Zagreb to a Portuguese mother (who was raised in Rio de Janeiro) and a Croatian father and grew up listening to Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento but also to other, less worldly known but very important artists whose brilliant music my mother collected in the early 70s. This collection of 10” records called “História da Música Popular Brasileira - MPB” was at the time released by Edições Abril and was distributed and sold at many newspaper stands all over Brazil. My mom, being a true music lover, bought the whole collection. Not long after, when her family was moving back from Brazil to Portugal, all the records travelled by ship with her. The same year after marrying my dad, she moved to Zagreb taking again the collection with her. Another journey the records made
was when our family moved to Lisbon in 1992, with a one year stop in Rome.

Now, I am very happy to have the collection with me here in Amsterdam. They are part of my family's multi- cultural heritage and a living proof that great music can stand the test of time.
