Mauv shares new single Manual on London/L.A. based label all my thoughts. Despite the infancy of the project, the London via the midlands artist has made waves of late, with recent single Change Will Come Anyway - a duet with Pixx - generating a buzz which saw the song on heavy rotation at BBC 6Music and eventually added to their playlist. 

New single Manual is an intense and explorative experience, showcasing Mauv's talents both as a lyricist and producer. Known in the South London scene - while still very much a newcomer - Mauv is something of an outlier, as his previous singles, including the hugely catchy Pillow Talk demonstrate. 

On the release Mauv says "I’d been in London for a year when I began this, and through the sudden intensity of city life I had a lot of pent up emotions and experiences that I wanted to put into this music"

Expect to hear more music from Mauv very soon. 
He will also perform at The Old Blue Last in London on November 18th.

Prayer For Peace is the latest LP from Melbroune-hailing nu-jazz maestro Ziggy Zeitgeist and his band, Zeitgeist Freedom Energy Exchange. This is Ziggy’s first full-length project with his current lineup based in Berlin since having moved there in the summer of 2019, and the first to be released on newly-founded label, Get Together Collective. Recorded over a 3-day period in the revered Jazzanova studios in Berlin, and with engineering and mixing handled by master producer Axel Reinemer, this album serves up an ecstatic 8-track showcase of the band’s freewheeling, live-jam oriented approach to jazz-fusion-inspired groove-making.  

	Clocking in at track six on the album, “Tightrope” balances many of the various elements that make Ziggy and co.’s music so electrifying. The opening half of the track, which features a mix of steady percussion, warbly bass, funky keys, congas and bongos, feels in line with much of the tradition of jazz-fusion pioneers of the past. But what easily could have become mere pastiche soon escalates into something entirely unique and entrancing. The beat steadily grows more erratic and unfettered once it passes the halfway point, with the tempo and build-up hinting at a techno-like drop. The band never quite lets the track devolve into a state of pure sonic catharsis, however, as they wrangle it back into the jazz-fusion rhythm they so expertly established in the opening half, while still allowing it to develop and evolve in organic ways until petering out at the end.

Ziggy and his cohort liberally take elements from various genres and styles to pay homage to them, while effortlessly staging jaw-dropping feats of experimentation and improvisation. A tough balancing act, indeed, but one that they pull off with panache.

Having soothing melodies go hand in hand with catchy rhythms is an achievement in and of its own. But to make them memorable and something to come back to time and time again is something else entirely! Still, Hanna – alias of Warren Harris – does it again. After the release of Love All, Contrafact Records proudly welcomes him back with the Skate and Flow EP. It demonstrates the artist’s tremendous skill and the basis for his continuous popularity within the Detroit House Scene, in which Harris is deeply rooted.

Hanna’s groovy melodies gently kick in. Especially of note here is a masterly smooth collaboration with Jeru the Damaja! Together, the three tracks on this record form a perfect – should we say crucial? - ingredient to moments of total relaxation.

Ahead of the full release of ‘Cycles’ by the Jazzfunk duo Re:Fill, Cognitiva shine a light on the incredible remixes that feature on the LP, with the reworks coming from some fine talents indeed.

The sound that Re:Fill are able to conjure up is one of rhythmic complexity, simmering melodic sequences, and an overall feeling of quietly building euphoria that only comes from Jazz laden dance grooves. To assist with the overall vibe of their debut LP, Sofatalk, WheelUP and Ben Hauke were recruited to put their spins on the cuts ‘Impulse’ and ‘Stillness’, and the goods they serve up are truly spectacular. ‘Impulse’ sees both Sofatalk and WheelUP working their magic, with the Sofatalk remix adding in a cosmic tinge to compliment the already wide array of chordal tones, with emphasis placed on the movement between density and spatial vacuums which makes the movement through the phases extra enjoyable. WheelUP takes things down to a saunter, but what a saunter it is, with the feeling captured here one of rhythmic excellence, with the keys enveloping the listener in what could only be described as a blissful bath of melody.

To wrap things up, Ben Hauke really shifts perspectives on ‘Stillness’, with the hazy piano fuelled experience found in the original turbo drived upon a two step leaning beat. The delicate piano that makes the original so intoxicating remains as a rhythmic motif, with plenty of intriguing elements thrown into the mix that keep the mind yearning for more, whilst the beat gets the feet stepping until the early hours.

Three remixes, three differing interpretations, one big wetting of the appetite. This excellent trio only hints at the wider picture, so get locked in until the big day arrives!
