Following on from last year’s pulverising Quinquewave compilation cut “Midnight Lamp”, South Korean drum and bass production duo Hollyland have returned to local label Confucian with their first full release, the intricate two-tracker “GURUGURU” / “Love and Bass”.

Garnering international acclaim with a string of appearances on British label Close 2 Death, Austria’s Neurofunk, What Else? and Germany’s Raving Panda Records among other imprints, the pair – formed of Kiwon and Taehyung – have increasingly fleshed out their signature sound, contrasting lush, cinematic builds with crunchy, bitcrushed basslines to create jaw-dropping results.

The new release’s breezy opener, “GURUGURU” builds upon this theme, commencing with silky keyboards and dreamy flourishes of brass before snapping into jagged, club-ready drops accented by mechanical growls, resonant subs and popping snares. “Love and Bass”, on the other hand, is a comparatively minimal techstep number. Favouring a pared-back arrangement centred around shimmering synth work, persistent ride cymbals and swelling basslines, the track serves as a somewhat serene counterpart to its predecessor, with an underlying edge to it nonetheless.

Having now found their footing in various styles of D&B including rattling, relentless neuro and painstakingly detailed, boundary-pushing techstep, Hollyland are increasingly becoming one of East Asia’s most exciting new drum and bass acts. “GURUGURU” / “Love and Bass” is bound to further cement this reputation; both tracks will be initially exclusive to Beatport from 20 December, hitting other digital vendors and streaming services on 3 January.
