A rare mix from the originator of Techno, Juan Atkins, as part of the celebration of three decades of Tresor, the German nightclub, label, and institution.

Recorded at the Tresor club in Berlin at the beginning of 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside-down, the mix spans the full spectrum of sub-genres that Techno has evolved into from its beginnings with Juan and his peers in 1980s Detroit. As such the mix is true testament to the genre from one of its founding fathers.

Juan’s classic track I Love You features on the forthcoming Tresor 30 compilation - 52 tracks of classics and exclusive commissions that map the flight path of Techno from the pioneers to the producers of today and tomorrow. This alongside the recent reissue of the seminal 3MB record Juan made alongside Moritz Von Oswald and Thomas Fehlmann perfectly encapsulates the long-lasting connection between Juan Atkins and Tresor, between Detroit and Berlin.

The Grey Area mix is a collection of celebral minimalism from which is a speciality of Robert Hood.   Never before has there been an illustration of the many values of "grey" within the genre we call Minimal.
While Minimal is now a sound all on its own which varies from region to region, deep concentration takes you through the mind of one of it's pioneers for a close analysis of this particular variation. The Grey Area.

The Grey Area title refers to Rob's vision of Detroit techno and electronic music as the sound that occupied the forgotten zones of Detroit, the areas that became utilised for warehouse parties back in the day, and still humm and whirr with the timeless sound of technology long after the actual heavy indutry has gone. There's a soulfully longing thread tying the tracks together, from the opening anonymous tracks to Maurizio's 'M4.5' and on into previously unobserved depths with a slew of exclsuive and unreleased M-Plant style killers this is eactly the kind of selection that has won Mr. Hood a legion of devoted fans across the world, and has massively influenced the sound of the scene's biggest clubs, with Dettmann and Klock's brand of stripped but powerful techno house owing a massive debt to his sound. We're struggling to name many of the tracks here which is one of the best features of this mix, it's so fresh much of it hasn't even seen the light of day yet but we'd be massively grateful if any of the keener ears out there (or Hood himself) would like to send us a tracklist! Especially track 14, or 17, or 21, what the f**k are they?! If the Fabric mix left you asking for something that little bit deeper and nastier you can't sleep on this righteous mix. We don’t often invite people to run the FACT Mix gauntlet more than once – but if anyone gets to bend the rules, it’s Klock.

The Berlin titan last graced these parts back in 2009, filing a muscular FACT Mix entirely in keeping with his reputation as Berghain’s bosher-in-chief. The last five years have seen him consolidate his reputation as a standard bearer of refined, take-no-prisoners techno; his eight-hour-plus sets continue to shake Berghain’s foundations, and, although his output has slowed substantially, he’s still found time to knock out the occasional release on Ostgut Ton. His Klockworks label continues to tick along, too - new releases from fellow FACT mixer Trevino and Etapp Kyle are imminent, plus, if a forthcoming stint of “studio time” comes good, potentially more new music from Klock himself.

Those expecting pulverising 4×4 might be surprised by Klock’s sophomore FACT mix – a “deeper, dreamy” collection, bookended by two vintage ambient tracks and shot through with wonder. Unreleased Klockworks material features, as do cuts from the likes of Function, Ben Sims, Surgeon, Orgue Electronique and Lucy. The mix is a studio-recorded affair – something Klock sees as a very different kettle of fish to playing out: “Club mixes are obviously more spontaneous and capture the vibe of a specific night, while working in the studio offers other possibilities like re-editing tracks and layering tunes more precisely, which I’ve done a lot of that here.” Set your watches…

What better way to kick off a new year than with a new project? Sure, podcasts are nothing new, but by now the Dekmantel family has grown to the point where we have a lot to shout about. The DJ collective, festival and label are all well established, but we feel we need even more outlets for all the great music we have from our extended family. As such, we are launching a new weekly series that will showcase exclusive mixes from our favourite friends and freaks, with Marcel Dettmann going first. 

Aside from being a supremely tall and long haired human being, Marcel Dettmann is of course one of the techno powerhouses behind Berghain. It is his long, seductive and firmly rooted techno sets that have made the Berlin club, and man himself, so hallowed around the world. Also a fine producer who lays down his own brand of concrete funk on labels like Ostgut Ton, 50Weapons and his own eponymous label, he inaugurates our series with a very special live recording then from New Year’s Eve 2014 at Berghain. The resulting 90 minute set is everything it should be - supple and seductive, then freaky and funky, then deliciously dark and increasingly weird towards the end, so enjoy the ride.

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
