Gracing Token with a 12” of reliable effect, Sterac (a.k.a. Steve Rachmad) offers 4 titles that go beyond the club - balancing raw Detroit influences and contemporary depth. With a reputation built on years of developing his scene through important record releases and local as well as international activity, ‘Light in the Darkness’ confirms Rachmad’s artistic relevance in a quickly developing scene. With a tone-setting introduction for the EP, Rachmad immediately grips the listener’s attention with the pragmatic yet nostalgic ‘Mangled’. Chord stabs inch away from a brutal on-beat drum sequence, a technique responsible for many hits in the genre, this time tastefully repolished through spreaded wooden percussion in direct support. ‘Mangled’ boasts what A1’s should - a worthy first impression - before luring us into what can be considered the apex of the EP. ‘Light in the Darkness’ claims the project title with a gradual exploration through celestial bodies. A minimal opening with a simple acid bassline shows a great deal of attitude before the listener gets caught in an unexpected tide of cosmic pads, dimensionalizing an initially linear record . With slow waves of rich synth work enveloping the only anchor to time that is rhythm, the result is a closed-eyed dance floor experience to be selected in prime conditions. Thick pads are immediately offered again, this time more orchestral than mental. The softness of this primary sound design is expertly dissected by a razor sharp resonant top synth and an upward drum construction, completing the spectrum of sound and unveiling a record with a size fit for warehouse capacities. Rachmad adds almost cinematic suspense to the EP with ‘S.O.’ - certainly not to be underestimated. This leads us to the project’s closer ‘Solidify’, a delirious club groover. With a sound as bent and confronting as a house of mirrors, Rachmad leaves us with a final chapter to keep the heart racing past the end.

SHDW’s label, Mutual Rytm hits a notable milestone at the start of 2024 as it turns two years old and hits its 20th release. To mark the occasion, the carefully curated compilation ‘Federation Of Rytm III’ arrives on February 2nd with a 30-track 5 x 12" boxset vinyl release and a further 6 digital bonus tracks.

Mutual Rytm is synonymous with serious, no-frills techno. It is a go-to for the world's most influential DJs and a home to some of the scene's most innovative producers. Over the last two years, it has explored several shades of sound, always with high-quality production and forward-thinking styles. A fine balance has always been struck between new and emerging talents and established names with plenty more to say, and that is the case on this collection which features the legendary likes of Blawan, Gary Beck, Colin Benders, The Advent and Dax J next to ANNĒ, Alarico, JakoJako, Chlär, LDS and many more.

Founder SHDW says, "I've poured my heart into curating a compilation of 36 tracks, a reflection of my deepest musical passions. IVVY, aka Madi Levine, makes music for heady dance floors. They layer in squelching synths to disfigured techno rhythms influenced by a youth spent at renegade warehouse parties in the Midwest. They have been on constant tour for a while now and left their mark everywhere, from Hot Mass (PGH) to On Earth (Toronto), while also teaching production and studio management workshops at events such as Kremfest 2019.

Madi also organises the experimental ambient music festival Ground Hum at home in Seattle and says the songs on this EP are a means of emotional processing. Violence, oppression, drugs, sex, growth, hope, and deep magic are explored through futurist techno tracks. "This EP represents a new era of healing for me, tracks created through a need to reflect on the way trauma has shaped my creative work. For me these tracks are musical building blocks to a better version of myself."

The compelling 'Top Me' opens up with pulsing deep techno drums, bass, and loopy vocal fragments that bring plenty of edge. '2 Balloons for 15' is more clanking and textured, with percussion ripping up the minimal rhythm and synths growing in intensity next to warped vocal mutterings. 'On Some ‘Rear Window’ Shit' is another deliciously dark and driving take on mutant techno with twisted metal and whirring machine sounds, and 'It Only Takes One Brick' is powered by distorted bass rumbles straight from a sleazy warehouse and peppered with twitchy stabs and menacing voices.

Remixer Bergsonist is Morocco-born but NYC-based. She explores notions of identity, memory, and social politics in her work. She is the founder of the community resource Pick Up The Flow and the Bizaarbazaar label, and hosts monthly shows on NTS Radio. Her first take on 'It Only Takes One Brick' is gloopy and off-balance - a perfectly heavyweight house cut with vast kicks and tripped-out details. The second one is just as thumping, but this time with a broken beat pattern and more sci-fi synth details.

A trio of digital-only cuts then closes out the EP - the stripped-back but booming techno-paranoia of 'Eric’s House 3AM', the glitchy and industrial textures of lineal banger 'Gives Me Hope For Us' and the spooky synths and eerie energy of the urgent 'Witchcraft.'

Datashader emerges from the shadows with a striking breaks- and bass-heavy debut release that challenges the fabric of our digital existence. Replete with a Dopplereffekt remix, it nods to the legacy of revered anonymous acts such as Scopex, Drexciya and Underground Resistance, pushing the boundaries of both electronic music exploration and its conceptual underpinnings. As a critique of the erosion of genuine human connection in the digital age, Datashader delivers a barrage of billowing subs, infectious electro, recontextualized jungle, and techno, serving as a poignant counterbalance to current dance floor-centric norms. It's a contemporary anti-soundtrack that offers a haunting mirror to the societal costs of technological convenience. 

In a world engulfed by the digital realm, where social media platforms thrive and dominate every aspect of our lives, the enigmatic project known as Datashader was founded to reflect on the pervasive erosion of authentic human connection through various virtual realities.

Artistically, Datashader seeks to critique the impact of technology on human identity and relationships, breaking with an archetype of digital conformity and expressing a profound disillusionment with the superficiality of online interactions through music. Genuine human connection and art cannot be quantified by likes, comments, or followers but rather thrives in the visceral realm of shared sonic experience and human emotion. This idea is at the core idea of Datashader, whose artistic expression ranges from avant-garde composition and electronic experimentations to art, installation, film and more.

Expressed within the varied contexts of diverse artistic mediums, Datashader explores the concept of "technological gentrification", which describes the gradual displacement of human interaction by technology. Just as gentrification alters the urban landscape, driving out communities and cultures, digital gentrification transforms the social landscape, replacing genuine connection with curated online personas. 

Musically, Datashader's practice confronts this dystopian reality, highlighting the alarming consequence of people becoming mere nodes in a network, reduced to a collection of data points. This is manifested sonically by a blistering assault of breaks, recontextualized IDM, abstract electronics and otherworldly synthscapes, conceived as the aesthetic counterbalance to much of contemporary electronic music's dancefloor focus. 

Datashader dives deep into genres and influences which stand for a form of sonic resistance: A contemporary anti- soundtrack &ndash; a sonic mirror of the price we pay for convenience and instant gratification. A self-image in constant flux. No false technological idols.

Deep Club Podcast #26: Dj Screendoor

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
