Haven are kicking off 2020 with a boom with a new EP of politically pessimistic dance-floor-ready weapons from label boss Keepsakes. Following on from his exploration of chunky slow rippers on 2019’s ‘Modern Anxious Vernacular’, this next edition in the Haven mastermind’s discography puts greater emphasis on rhythmic groove for the dancers among us.

The record starts with ‘And So The Feckless Fall’ on the A1, featuring shuffling drum rhythms and ethereal vocal work, descending in to a menacing, swung synth-line for maximum club effect. This is followed by ‘Blue Boy Fucks It All’ on the A2. Reminiscent of the slo-mo bangers of Keepsakes’ last EP, this crawler of a track is initially propelled by its moody synth melody and booming drums, with a mid-track switch up putting melancholic pad chords front-and-centre. The flip side begins with ‘Ignorant Irony’ - a certified floor smasher prioritising groove with it’s swinging drum rhythms, cheeky vocal samples and sinister synth sounds. The record ends with a remix of the B1 from UVB - who reimagines the track in to a sneering, ominous slammer, with brutal yet groovy drum work and sampling closing the EP with another no-nonsense banger.

Following the labels theme of reaching beyond the conventional record label by combining music experimentation, short narratives, true stories, and illustrations – Jujuka 002 pushes into new territory with the Split EP “Raw Reflex” featuring founder Julia Govor on the A side followed by the first recordings of EMIT.  Julia reaches into her imagination to find Soviet Union enthusiasm met with an American punk drive to add to her signature vibrant arrangement.  Behind the EMIT alias is the intricate and vivid musician / producer – Kamran Sadeghi.  EMIT read backwards is ‘time’ – the continuum of experience in which events pass from the future through the present to the past.  The project is guided by the literal and musical use of time.  A culmination of styles unravel within each track, encouraging listeners to discover their own path through the rhythmic and tonal patterns.  The music belongs to every-body and no-body.

‘Broken Pencil’ is a combination of sharp and high frequency sounds that break the rhythm, twisting it with Julia’s demonic vocals singing iconic 90’s era Russian lyrics from the cartoon “Antoshka”  – Julia calls it “Bedford–Stuyvesant Techno”.  ‘Naked Soul’ was produced during a long and lonely tour around Asia while listening to “Train” from the Solaris soundtrack by Edward Artemiev on repeat.  In 2012 Julia conducted a video interview with Ricardo Villalobos, where he confessed that he fears dreaming and therefore “prefers not to sleep”. For Villa Tone Julia sampled that part of the interview and used Ricardo’s voice to build loops and textures.  The rhythm became something between Reggaeton mixed with UK bass.

Much like all music by Emit – ‘Hyphen’ was recorded live in the studio.  The original version is over 30 minutes long and has the lead cyclical synth pattern very slowly and subliminally approaching the mix from a far distance – a soundtrack for the time traveler.  ‘Free Stuff Forever’ is like a linear conversation that is making sense, then at some point it becomes abstract. Rather than altering it’s natural course you perch on the highest branch in the tree and gaze into the horizon – free your stuff forever!  ‘Greyscale’ was inspired by the theory that right angles do not exist in nature and are a human invention instigated by their upright posture, making them perpendicular to the ground plane – creating the spiritual intersection of the heavenly and earthbound.

DJ Lily returns to LILIES this August with the label's sixth release, featuring a collaboration with label partner Sailor Juul and remixes from Inhalt der Nacht (@inhaltdernacht ) and The Mountain Range (@christofferberg ).

Here the label continues with more material from Lily and introduces the debut collaborative material with Sailor Juul, who has now joined ship to run both Bror and Lilies alongside DJ Lily, the fellow Swedish artist features on the lead track here while more productions from the pair will follow soon on the label later this year.

‘Bequem ft. Sailor Juul’ leads, a high-octane 140BPM cut driven by menacing bass pulsations, dynamic drums, tension building resonance and murky vocal chants. Lebendig label boss and Monnom Black artist Inhalt der Nacht delivers his twist on ‘Bequem ft. Sailor Juul’ next, bringing crunchy percussion, distorted synth sequences and airy pads into focus for a typically upfront workout from the Berlin-based artist.

DJ Lily’s solo track ‘Safeword Tegnell’ opens the flip side, fusing bubbling percussion, bumpy drums and 8-bit synth chimes throughout. Christoffer Berg returns under his The Mountain Range (Aniara Recordings) guise next to complete the package, the artist who is part of Robyn’s band and was the synth programmer for Depeche Mode on the album Delta machine amongst other things delivers a truly unique take on ‘Safeword Tegnell’, amusingly described by a friend as "Scooter meets Dopplereffekt at Tresor". Berg twists the original elements with psychedelic sound design, ever unfolding drum patterns and a mind-altering feel across its six-minute duration.

10 Years Of Dame-Music Vol. 2

As Dense & Pika, Alex Jones and Chris Spero have garnered an enviable reputation for making devastating club ordnance that finds the sweet spot between dark, mysterious house and roaring, brawny techno. With over a decade of material under their belt, Jones and Spero are set to release their first studio length debut album, ‘Colour Burn’ via London major imprint BMG on 4th December, home to the likes of Leftfield, The Prodigy, Holy Ghost and Faithless.
‘Colour Burn’ is a 13-track composition crossing through downtempo house and
electronica, built as a conceptual sonic representation of the pair’s live audio and visual set up. The album is a step away from harder and faster material and a move towards a more leftfield sonic trajectory, featuring a handful of impressive heavyweight features of Jones & Spero’s musical heroes who have informed the Dense & Pika output.
Released today, album moment ‘Honey’ features the master of sensual, slow-burn techno, Matthew Dear whose contribution to ‘Honey’ arrives in vocal form – a breathy, brooding ensemble of spoken word that glues perfectly with the duo’s trademark rough and textured sound palette. It helps turn what Alex calls “a headsy, dusty piece of housey tech” into something sensual and otherworldly.
Dark and smouldering, it seems to the suck the air out of the room like a tightly packed subterranean dancefloor deep in the throes of night. Glitched out percussion and fizzling hi-hats feel caustic against the track’s low-end frequencies. The thumping bassline and kick drum combination delivers punch and pressure to the mix in a true Dense & Pika format. Matthew’s sauntering vocal contribution guides the track into a deep and hypnotic groove well equipped for any late-night excursion. “The boys sent over a lengthy jam, but there was that simple loop that stood out and had me hooked. I put it
on repeat and let the mind and pen wander. It’s a bit of cosmic abandonment, brazenly sung by a professional of the night.” Matthew Dear
Elsewhere on the LP, standout track ‘Hidden’ features the drums of Sepultura’s
legendary metal icon Igor Cavalera resulting in a fabulous frenzy of percussion and driving rhythm. The equally momentous and unforgettable ‘Control’ features the heavily robotic vocoder of Leftfield’s Neil Barnes aiding and abetting in its quest to be a high-octane, twisted rave jam.
The impressive features on ‘Colour Burn’ are an insight into the hugely artistic and visionary skills of Alex and Chris and the start of a new chapter for Dense & Pika kicking off with the long-awaited release of their first studio length album.

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
