They are here, all over: sudden, random molecular movements. Invisible and yet extremely effective. Perceptible only to those who turn on things from a peculiar outlook. Now R.i.O. unfolds the second edition of “Risks Issues Opportunities”, bringing interstellar musical developments full of little, yet profound molecule advances. Eight mystical fate spinners, with the muscle to shed some light on unanswered questions, that will stay unanswered after all.
Monolithic, yet deeply fragile compositions, made by terrestrials like Leipzig based producer Syncboy, Pannotia from Sydney, Italy based dusty drum machines lovers Twoonky, Charlotte Simon, known as one half of the art duo Les Trucs from Frankfurt, Berlin mystic’s like Airaboi or Nadia D'Alò of the duo INIT, Brooklyn based “The Thing” housekeeper Willie Burns and Vienna’s symbolist sound poet Bocksrucker. They all created electric signs for the above. Murky analogue prophesiers without prophecy, bringing headway music against the greedy frontier spirit. Hypnotic tones out of a hazy musical outer space. Like a dream that forgot to dream, they wave around with veiled frequencies full of ray, processed through analogue machine power. Music, that is able to in sight humans to an Atget photography. Able to transmit flashes to the firmament, to stars that wander darkling in eternal space. And
yes: to some who listen a sudden physical movement might transpire, despite the fact that all was made without a particular practical value. Art for art's sake. In favor of an alternative to reality. Compellingly haunted by itself. Like stone, that awaits a random molecular movement.

Imre Kiss is a producer and DJ active in the electronic music scene for several years, well-known for his works with various labels and collectives such as Farbwechsel or CRISIS. He has a distinct style of faded, dreamlike echoes with crisp, analog beats, saturated with a hint of mesmerizing, distorted house narratives. EXILES welcomes Kiss’ latest release ‘Keys to Cassiopeia’ to their catalogue, presenting a fresh direction in the artist’s newest interstellar ventures.

Beyond the black sky above our heads, filled with countless bright sparkles lies the vast, ever-expanding system of celestial bodies, galaxies, nebulae and unknown fields. Outer space catched the imagination and fascination of humankind since the dawn of time, calling all scientists, artists and dreamers on a voyage of wondrous explorations. We are still just scratching the stardust from the surface of all of this, whether they are the hottest takes from the James Webb Telescope or the latest mind-blowing sci-fi series, but one thing is certain: ‘Keys to Cassiopeia’ invites us on a journey that opens up new horizons and unheard perspectives.

The 9-track album describes a cosmic trip to uncharted territories, deep into the spheres of mythical constellations. The various chapters of ‘Keys to Cassiopea’ evoke themes such as the innocent dreams of exploring the universe, the energetic blasts of rockets (‘Theme I’) or the dreadful coldness of being alone, thousand miles away from the Kármán line (‘Theme II’). Floating like a confused spacecraft, ‘Theme III’ opens with gentle subharmonics and ambient pads, when out of a sudden, friendly plucks of strings and woodwinds appear, offering their companionship and soothing the fright.

With two interludes on its both ends, ‘Theme IV’ offers a look on the highlight of the journey, that fills the passenger with joy, vocation and a sense of ineffable composure. Coming with a dynamic and bright movement, ‘Theme V’ approaches us with a rather playful and light manner. It suggests a safe trip onwards, filled with meandering thoughts that remain with the listener, tempting us to return back to them again and again. The closing track draws an ending line to the narrative arc: it suggests ease and a fading image of a star’s collapse, leaving behind nothing but a stellar remnant. Echoes of the past, endpoints of an evolution, the final moments of an intergalactic tale.

Ears On Earth & Super Utu present Household Choirs: A selection of housebound voices singing together in harmony. From forth the abodes of 11 independent nations come 22 songs spread across two CDs inside a limited edition double jewel case designed by EOE’s Danilo.

The recent disruption of daily life has caused us to reflect and consider what we believe to be meaningful, important and what brings joy to our existence. For the dance community who have had their places of worship shut down indefinitely, a unifying space we can all occupy is a freedom of the mind. In physical confinement, freedom becomes a state of mind; A place to visit when we can’t move our bodies the way we want to. These two CDs symbolise inside and outside dance spaces made inaccessible to us by the pandemic.

So we gathered a choir of households to share their voices.

Household Choirs - EOE CD [Ears On Earth & Super Utu]

Through aeons of evolution, the mysterious metamorphosis of the vinyan butterfly advances with a new moon: slowly becoming whole, casting sounds and echoes from one dimension to another. We witness the next cycle as it spreads its wings and emerges from the chrysalis. The eccentric landscapes and hypnotic blends of @sunjuhargun and Khun Fluff are given new capacity and perception catalyzed by Full Circle (aka @joakimbouaziz and @alexisletan), @s-o-n-s under his SYO moniker, and an eternal injection rework bonus.

The A-side features Sunju Hargun’s ٹرانس - released prior on the Vinyan cassette and now for the first time on vinyl - spinning around a warm body of transportive delays and reverberant acid textures. The steadily drifting polyrhythms send a balance of nuance and intensity off to the inner-nebula. Up next, the mysterious Seoul-based producer S.O.N.S revisits his SYO moniker for an alternative interpretation. Leaving all subtleties behind, his rework takes off at the speed of sound, trembling into warped patterns of stubborn percussion, spirals, and even a "Koto" cameo, emerging into a sophisticated rapid-speed blend of ecstatic rhythms.

The proto-Goa devotees Full Circle take over the entire flip with their unique twist on another cassette original: Khun Fluff’s poetic วิญญาณ (Vinyan). At the speed of spoken word, the track is built around Kalayanapong’s reincarnation poem recited by Chucheewa. “Late at night, I ate starlight, to nourish. Poetry pours out at dawn, forevermore.” Groovy, subtle, spaced out to other dimensions, it brings one into a sedated delirium. A state in which the night's darkness and grooves gently but firmly mix with the light and hopes of the first rays of sun. One for the 6 AM sunrises, meow meow.

Along with a download card, the digital bonus on the release is Sunju Hargun’s eternal injection of ٹرانس. Starting like a hazy, dreamy, subdued, early morning ambient track, it morphs and transforms into a colorful, ever faster flying musical butterfly, bringing light, and speed in the E.P. 's final track.

At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
