The most interesting names breaking-through from the underground electronic music scene

Trommel: InSession

I know we say this almost every week, but for our next edition of Trommel InSession we have something very special for you. The moniker Respond/React might be new but it is comprised of three artists that are certainly not new to the scene. Artists Man/Ipulate, Massaï, and Lamalice will no doubt conjure up lengthy Sentaku parties helmed by their founders and regulars that have helped the Parisian / London based label and event series to flourish. The ethos of the triple trouble combo offers fresh perspective in the relationship between crowd, the music and the emotion that comes with hearing a new track at home and the effect that it has on the audience at a gig. 

The three have illustrious solo adventures and so the prospect of all three artists working together behind the decks is mouth-watering. Luckily for you this ethos was cemented in the live recording of their set for the French brothers Mates in Bordeaux. At the Sentaku showcase Man/Ipulate, Massaï, and Lamalice deftly switch between banging house, grinding basslines and insistent breaks all with a special synergy between them that resulted in this vibe heavy recording.

PRST Club resident duo Apua and Stipo have been pivotal in the progress of Austria’s underground scene. Regularly being called upon to support the visiting talent to their home city of Vienna, these two rising artists are stars in the making themselves. As well as both artists being part of the Vienna Worldwide collective, Stipo is the founder of the Rhythm Science imprint. 

Having seen what they can do when Stipo was part of our Easter PRST egg-travaganza, we couldn't wait for the pair to join our InSession series. They have not disappointed as they raise the levels from the first track. With the funk dialled up to eleven from the outset, they quickly shift through percussive house, vocal gems, before shifting up a gear with chunky tech house. Regardless of the subgenre, Apua and Stipo always maintain their love of vibe-heavy stunners.

Having established herself as a true rising talent of the UK underground, Reeshy has grown to become a staple of the festival and club circuit at home and abroad. She is regularly called upon to provide the heat for the likes of FUSE, Hide & Seek Festival, Gottwood Festival, Little Fields, The Warehouse Project, as well as weekly manoeuvres around the UK’s top clubs. As well as her name being on the lips of promoters across the land, this Northern lass is also beginning to stamp her name on the minds of label owners with a clutch of releases on Pilot, Mindhelmet, and a slew of imminent releases.

It would be an understatement to say we are thrilled to welcome Reeshy to our InSession series, as she has been more than proving her mettle for time now. For this rather poignant edition, we present the live recording from her set at the Imaginarium in Leeds before it was forced to sadly close its doors by Leeds council. Taking charge with a heady mix of lush breaks, garage, moody house gems, and bass-fueled bombs, Reeshy never lets the vibes drop below boiling point. She proves exactly why she is in such high demand.

Having hosted us back in June when we rolled into Hanoi with Brasi, we needed to know more about this meticulous selector. Established himself as resident DJ at the cities Savage club, Zwi is the driving force at one of regions finest beat emporiums and has warmed up for a wide spectrum of artists that have recently included Mr. Ho, Loa Szala, nd_baumecker, Phase Fatale, Vithz, and Lamalice. As well as his continued work with Savage, Zwi also runs his own project METRØ which celebrated turning the ripe old age of six back in May. 

This diverse musical palette has led the Hanoi based Zwi to become a go to artist in the region and has massively informed his all encompassing sound. This is perfectly exhibited on his InSession for us where he moves from moody broken after hour beats through to deeper shades of house, and then through to more upfront cuts but always keeping that groove and funk strong throughout. Zwi proves that even in the far reaches of the underground there are fantastic artists and undiscovered musical gems to be found.

Having just celebrated six years in the game, Alien Communications has, in that time, delivered a headsy mix of electro and techno - fuelling countless parties, artist debuts, and a raft of top-tier releases. Regularly pushing the envelope with events like The Big Bang and a residency at The Lion & Lamb, AC’s booking policy has welcomed an array of heavy hitters, including Underground Resistance, Radioactive Man, DJ Stingray, Juan Atkins, Dopplereffekt and Jane Fitz - the list goes on.

Beyond exploring the far reaches of Detroit electro and techno, as well as showcasing the very best talent from the UK and Europe at his events, the Alien Communications label has become a creative home for the studio output of an exciting clutch of artists. From homegrown heroes such as Domenic Cappello, Ste Roberts, Polytunnel, Adam Curtain and Hardacre, to the expansive “Astral Projections” VA release, AC has made a clear statement of intent.

With Alien Communications’ star rising exponentially, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the UK artist’s turn on our InSessions mix series - and he hasn’t disappointed. Welding bomb-proof beats, outrageous acid lines, and fathoms-deep basslines to robotic aesthetics, this mix simultaneously looks back in time while fast-forwarding far into the future. To say the future is bright for Alien Communications would be an understatement, as he continues to weave his way across the world’s finest dancefloors.

Alien Communications - Trommel InSession 161

Hailing from Barcelona, Lis Sarocca is an artist very much on the rise and her ever growing discography will go some way to explain why. She has starred on standout releases from the likes of MAAI, Tresydos, Smallville, Chiwax, Shall Not Fade, a vintage Mobilee entry, and the excellent collab between Anna Walls’ The Bricks and System Error. 

A regular fixture at some of Europe and America’s finest parties, she has written a line under a fantastic summer with a lauded performance at this year’s Dimensions Festival. There is no sign of the Spaniard turning in for the year as she continues to light up dancefloors wherever she appears.

Her recording for our InSession series is testament to this and her sunny disposition shines through in this mix as she guides us through bass heavy, breaky goodness, dubby deep house, with stop offs in wiggly disco heaters and more than a few wonky stations along the way.
