This mix was my musical extrapolation of this quote. As I put together the tracks in the mix, the idea of small sounds in big spaces became more metaphysical, as a metaphor for memory and nostalgia. Small, seemingly insignificant events in our past can expand in significance over time, informed by our experiences later on in life, and with our emotions acting as a tool of reverberation, extending their presence in our lives far past their time of occurrence. What begun as a process of selecting tracks that quite literally feature "small sounds in big spaces" soon morphed into a dig into my distant past, to nearly 20 years ago when I first started learning to DJ. I pulled from the mnml tracks that had an important influence on my formative years, their impact can still be heard in the contemporary tracks I play today, all of them bouncing next to each other in this nearly 2hr musical collage.

This week's animix comes from the incredible duo, Atrice (@atricemiras) - a mystical pairing who are part of a pool of insanely talented artists in the small Central European state, Switzerland -  there is a seemingly bursting ratio of talent per capita in this country!.

Drawing inspiration from everyday encounters and digital overstimulation, Atrice's music is refreshing, unique and modern - idm, experimental & bass driven - it somehow also sits perfectly amongst the class & purity of old school & solidified genres like dub, bass, techno - which is seen in their releases on labels like Illian Tape. 

On top of their productions and live sets, Lino & Pablo extend their craft with their on theme DJ'ing - always presenting new & exciting.. and always making perfect sense. For their animix, a beautiful journey through dub and beyond.

Blurred Lines Mix 07

Three hours of my favourite Muslimgauze tracks, plus a Boss RE-20 delay pedal, recorded live on 24th September 2025 at Ikii, Berlin.

I was first exposed to Muslimgauze in 2017, when Simon Scott opened the Mungo's HiFi stage of Dimensions Festival with an all-Muslimgauze set*. I'm slightly ashamed to say that at the time it wasn't really my thing, but I was intrigued by the sound and I kept my ears open for more in the years that followed. I imagine I had a similar experience to many who cross paths with his music: I picked up a couple of his albums, but his daunting discography of ~200 releases put me off from digging deeper.

Over the past few months I've put in a determined effort to listen through most of it. I discovered a vast expanse of interesting music, a unique soundclash of rhythm, dub and tape loops, all coloured by Bryn Jones's obsession with the Muslim world. I was pleasantly surprised by how much good stuff there is - while there is a lot of repetition, much of it is genuinely hypnotic. It's also raw, experimental and fiercely political.

To help prioritise my digging, I went through several lists of other people's top Muslimgauze releases. One thing that struck me was how different these lists all were, and how little they intersected with my own favourites in the end. Different listeners clearly come away with entirely different takes from his discography. So while I hope this recording piques your interest, I strongly encourage you to go on your own Muslimgauze digging journey and find your own personal favourites. Thanks to the crew at Ikii for giving me the opportunity to share mine.

If you’ve been reading Truants closely over the past couple of years, you’ll know we’ve sung Manchester-based collective Swing Ting’s praises on a number of occasions. Originally formed as a radio show, Swing Ting now manifests itself as a clubnight and a record label, championing their own productions within UK club and soundsystem culture. The nights tend to swamp Soup Kitchen with bashment, dancehall, azonto, soca, hip-hop, RnB and grime. Amongst the residents are integral characters Balraj Samrai and Ruben Platt, who’ve also been major proponents of Swing Ting as a label. Brackles, Fox, Trigganom, Famous Eno and Madd Again! - a collaboration between Zed Bias, Killa Benz, Specialist Moss and Trigga - have all featured on the label, as have productions from Samrai and Platt themselves. We premiered “Bad Riddim” back in March, a weighty instrumental backed with the Trigganom-featuring earworm “One Step”. Knowing how capable the pair are on the decks as well as in the studio, we figured it was high time we asked them for a Truancy Volume - what we didn’t know was how outrageous the end result would be. There’s no other way to put it, Samrai and Platt fully throw down in the mix and they’ll leave you feeling wavy for days.
