With some of my most listened to mixes of the past year, it's a joy to welcome Eora based Command D for Maybe number three - this one is deeep!! 

Command D is a very gifted DJ with a vast collection and a taste that always hits the mark. The mix he has put together is a beautiful excursion through lush and dubby sounds. Sophisticated beats for home listening - silky smooth!

Aside from taking the time to put together this mix, Charley has been spending the current Sydney lockdown working on his own productions which I am so excited to see surface.

As often extensively touring as he is on the quest for new sounds (‘the iron fence in front of the studio’, ‘the wooden door in the toilet’ among other samples), or building instruments from scratch with his pals (see Modular Organ System), Phillip Sollmann’s experimental zeal underscores a conceptual framework that reveals a collage of influences as broad as Basic Channel, Francis Bacon, Japan or the room he’s sitting in. This often amounts to smooth and genre-busting segues on Dial, Curle and Ostgut Ton. For Bassiani Podcast 120, the German neutoner challenges and surprises with an hour of osmotic and textural 4/4 techno, twilight arps and fidgety basslines. Efdemin at his very best.

Welcoming Eora based DJ, producer and ridiculously good skateboarder Charles Fester aka @commandd to Passing Notes, who joined me in the studio for episode 168. Another talent emerging from the golden lockdown era of producers, Command D is an up and comer deserving of a direct line to everyone’s watch list. Drawing creative inspiration from the space between the digital realm and the natural world, Command D’s deft productions showcase a sophisticated balance between driving deep tech, rhythmic complexity and hypnotic atmospherics. His immediately captivating debut EP ‘Clone Dialogue’ recently graced the catalogue of bass-leaning label @bodypromise. A four track journey which introduces listeners to Command D’s already established sound - expect contemporary takes on the classic sounds of dub techno, tech house, bass and electro.

Jasmín (@jasminhoek) is one of the latest talents to emerge from the ever-fertile Amsterdam scene. Like many of her generation, she is impossible to pin down with genre restrictions. She is bold and adventurous in her selections and has played everywhere from South Africa to New York where she unites club, techno, bass and plenty more with her elastic DJ style and knack for exciting rhythms. During the
lockdown, Jasmín kept busy by getting to grips with Ableton so expect to hear some debut productions soon, but before that comes this week's mix.

It's a muscular workout that threads together warped bass lines and slithering synths. A tribal element to the pounding drums speaks to our primeval urge to dance while psychedelic sounds wave their way in later as things get deeper and more involved. Despite the very different worlds from which these tracks are drawn, there is seamless mixing throughout which makes the trip all the more hypnotic.

As @sleepd, childhood friends Maryos Syawish and Corey Kikos have greatly helped shape Melbourne's underground scene over the last decade. Between them, they have Iraqi and Maltese heritage and put out music on the likes of Incienso, Play On and Cocktail d'Amore Music as well as their own blog/party/label Butter Sessions. Like their expressive live show, it explores "the rave unconscious" so think everything from dreamy pads to driving rhythms, gritty electro to cosmic techno. 

This week's podcast is a superb showcase of their style: a mix that is constantly on the move, building momentum as rhythms go from elastic and bouncy to more driving and sleek. Percussion is perfectly sprinkled in to give extra texture, while nebulous synths add the colour as the pressure builds and builds. This is physical, psychedelic, emotional, trance-inducing electronic music that follows the familiar arc of a well-executed mix but in all new and unfamiliar ways.

Hello : - ) I’m Charley (he/him) and I’ve recently started living in Newtown, Sydney/Eora.

Describe in detail your favorite place to sit & listen to music.

In the front or back yard of my house each morning while I drink coffee, that’s when I do most of my listening.

Best Ableton trick?

Command + D

Last track you would want to hear before losing your hearing…

Either Bill Evans - Lucky To Be Me or one of the 30 minute dub techno journeys on Echospace Detroit. Depends on which mood I’m in at the time.

Favorite DJ mixing trick?

A well done highpass filter, I don’t always nail it…

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Can’t pick one as everyone offers their own flavour. Fruit Bowl, Umami, Translate, Pure Space, General Merchant, Douglas St, DUNJ, Alien, Honey Point, Unsung, Athletica, Brighter Days, Heavenly, Headroom, Eureka, Nectar, Vibe Positive, Boof and Jazz Wednesdays (lol) are just off the top of my head. The list goes on! Lots of passionate people here doing great things.

What is your most recent favorite DJ mix and why?

The mix by Gi Gi on Motion Ward is definitely my favourite and most played mix of the year. The whole thing flows so well and the selections have a really beautiful cohesion within the textures and sounds. All of the blends are incredible and the second half will bring a tear to your eye.

Any advice to upcoming DJs/producers?

Explore the things you love the most, progression will be much easier and faster this way. Showing your passion and support within your local scene will present you with opportunities and being prepared will help you utilise those opportunities to create more.

Favorite BPM and why?

130bpm is my favorite. For the styles of music that I DJ most of the time it seems to cover the widest range of styles. It has a lot of energy but enough space to focus on the accents and space. It also sounds good in non dance music. It’s a weird one because even though I can say pretty confidently that 130 is my favourite, when I was prepping for a wedding gig one day I realised that BPM has a very minor effect on the energy of a tune and it’s really all about the production.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

Northallsen Records is an electronic music label founded in Bogotá, Colombia in 2016 by Aleja Sanchez.

The label's sound embraces the realms of hypnotism and explores the fusion between organic soundscapes, experimental and acoustic elements, with the powerful load of techno music, revealing a sonic narrative that flows between the mysticism of ancestral cultures and the spiritual power of nature.

In order to build the concept, far away from trying to emulate a sound, the label curation is focused on artists with their own identity and particular voice, with a foundation into their musical and artistic proposals. Recent releases have featured the likes of Oscar Mulero, Deepbass, Reggy van Oers, Magna Pia, Polygonia, Tekra, !nertia, Psyk, Laertes, Iori and founder Aleja Sanchez.

The label is intended to keep and highlight the deepness and beauty of techno and electronic music since Northallsen considers music as a tool to help bring harmony and peace in the middle of the tragic war-related situation we all are facing currently around the world.

DASCO is a hurricane force with recent roots in Berlin, active for the past decade and packing as strong a punch today as she ever has. That’s as true of her music as it is her persona. She has the kind of rare, contagious energy that’s capable of setting dancefloors ablaze: animated, celebratory and full of joie de vivre. As DJ, she draws from the wells of Chicago house and UR, as much as 90s UK rave: dispatching rhythms from the booths at Tresor, Panorama Bar, RSO, Bristol’s Motion and many more. Most underground movements in the arts can be boiled down to one key ingredient: friends doing dope shit together. Childhood BFFs Luca Medici and Delbert Perez have been doing just that with INVT (that's "innovate"), a multidisciplinary art project that spans club music and streetwear. Before exploding onto the international stage and playing to massive crowds in Ibiza and Tulum, the Miami natives built a solid community at home through electrifying DJ sets, releases and fashion. They might be globe-trotting artists now, going back-to-back with artists like Skream and playing Panorama Bar, but their raw DIY spirit stays strong.

Their tunes and live hardware shows fuse jungle, techno, East Coast club and dubstep—and lately, tech house and tribal house—with bass-heavy Latin genres like cumbia and guaracha. A reflection of Miami's diverse demographics, their genre cross-pollinations bring together skaters, dancers, artists and various subcultures. Their clothing lines are equally cross-cultural: repurposed vintage items made from screen printing and acid washing, using photos and designs that represent their home city's vibrant street culture. True to their grassroots ethos, everything's done in-house, from mixing and mastering tracks to embroidery.

The next-gen duo's ultra-rhythmic productions, characterised by deep, swinging drums and trippy textures, is delivered to the world at a rapid-fire pace, testament to Medici and Perez's seemingly insatiable hunger. Their explosive career has helped bring fresh shine to Miami talents who feature heavily in their sets, including this RA Podcast. Featuring DJ Babatr, Coffintexts and plenty of their own unreleased heaters, INVT's mix represents their friendships, community and Miami's thrilling melting pot of dance music that they're still a core part of even as they move across the globe.
